As far back as I can remember, THE CHICKEN has been a big part of Lake Stevens' tradition, as well as history. All three (3) of my older brothers graduated from Lake Stevens High School, and I graduated from there thirty (30) years ago, this year. As I was away for twenty (20) years, I'm not sure where all The Chicken has been, but I do remember seeing it every time I came home to visit, and when I moved back about four (4) years ago. Then, it disappeared. Oh, no! I asked where it went, but nobody I knew, knew. When it showed up down-town, at the "New" Chicken Restaurant, I was happy again. You see, back in the 70's EVERY year, the seniors would "steal" The Chicken from atop the restaurant up at Frontier Village, and put it on top of the "Pink Palace": the main building of our high school. It was considered a senior prank - done near the end of each school year! After a few years, the restaurant and school officials half expected it! Then, it was TRADITION! and now it is HISTORY!
I was very sad to see the Pink Palace gone. I guess it could not be kept as a "landmark" even though it was a very, very old building. I think the writing on the entrance said, "Built in 1916"? But The Chicken? Why would he have to go? I wish he could be placed on TOP of the new Chicken Restaurant... but I like to see it beside it, too. Every time I see THE Chicken, it brings back very fond memories, not just of high school, but of ALL of my childhood. From as far back as I can remember, up to graduation in 1978, and on until I moved east in 1984. But anytime you talk to ANYBODY in Lake Stevens (especially someone who has lived here a long time, like my family and ALL the "kids" I went to school with who still live & visit aroud here) and anytime you say THE CHICKEN - they know EXACTLY what you are talking about. With all the chicken farms we had around here, there was only ONE - THE CHICKEN (as "the" denotes there is only one). So please, KEEP a big (7 foot tall) piece of Lake Stevens HISTORY.... It shouldn't cost a thing!!! If it does, put up a jar at the mini-mart, I'm sure we'd be glad to pay for it with our change. But it sure would mean the WORLD to a lot of people! Including everyone I've talked to this last week!
We love our CHICKEN!
Thank you for your time and attention.
