Whatever. If a kid ran at me with a pair of scissors and I shot him, my ass would be in jail for a couple of years.

The base problem here is our government's lack of concern. Why they can't use city or county tax money from THREE people for the year to buy one $60 taser for each police officer, I don't know. How about you use MY tax money for it? I'll voluntarily give up my hard earned money if it were used to make sure another poor family like this one doesn't watch their basically unarmed kid get shot 8 times by 4 grown men with a gun a peice. I think 4 grown men could take some dull scissors off of a kid without getting hurt and without killing him.

I own a gun and practice with it frequently. If someone charged me with scissors, I guarantee I'd shoot straight for the knee or shoulder so they can't get to me or they're forced to drop the weapon. And I trained my own damn self to think about the situation before I go killing someone for some bullshit.

"We aren't trained to injure, we're trained to kill" So train yourself to injure.

Plus, these guys talked to the kid for 30 minutes. They didn't arm themselves with non-lethal means to arrest him? Really? 30 minutes and you're standing there with guns trained on him?

So why not have one cop with one gun trained on him in case something happens instead of letting all four people pump unneccessary bullets into the kid?

IQ tests for cops. Tasers for cops. All I'm saying.

I hate to shoot you down J But the were talking for 30 minutes now in that time I am sure in that 30 min window there were other avenues the police could have taken , how about a shotgun with bird shot in the leg , foot ,arm ? no riot gear on the police force sheilds whats the use the killed a kid , Good thing he was white because Al Sharpton , Jessie Jackson, Dick Greggory, NAACP and every black preacher would be all over this and there would be riots in your Streets tonight.

It is well known in military, law enforcement, and martial arts that inside of 21 feet a man with a knife (read 9 inch long siccors)is more dangerous than a man with a gun. This is because the average individual can cover this distance in less than two seconds, while it takes longer than two seconds to draw and fire a gun. So this man charges the police, it takes them a second to register whats happening and then what .......?? You want them to use the remaining second to re-holster their gun, calmly draw and deploy their mace, and hope for the best? The fact that they were negotiating for 30 min suggests they were waiting for a unit with nonletheals to arrive on the scene.

I'm with you Lindsay, But you know we are barking at the moon here right , The way you prevent this from becomming the norm is at the ballot box . Goveners, Mayors ,Sheriff, town council and county commissioners all want their jobs and are supposed to reflect the wishes of the people to their higher ups to make social change, But try to get the folks to do that . GOOD LUCK

There is not a police officer in this country that is instructed to shoot to wound. Charging a cop with a pair of 9” scissors, which is the same as a 9” knife, is a sure way to end up dead. The fact that the officers tried for thirty minutes to disarm this young man speaks volumes to the fact that they were not “trigger happy.” Since the parents, who called the police on him out of fear could not disarm or control this man (he is 18). What makes the public think that the cops should arrive and take a couple of stab wounds rather than save their own lives. Also, I surprised the criminologist quoted in this article didn’t recommend the police sprinkle some “magic powder” to prevent his obvious suicidal or homicidal act because taser guns were not meant to be used against charging armed suspects.
unfortuneatly this was not "your" son. I agree with everyone else about abusive use of force. Not trained to disarm or stop someone using non lethal means is absolutely no excuse. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out or a phd.
