Large or Small?

You thought I was going to start ranting about the government - should it be large so it can help us all or should it be small so we can help ourselves? Fact: the government is gigantic and I can't help it.
I'm talking about: our thinking, our attitudes, our realities. Are they large or are they small?
We've been discussing gigantic ideas: world economic collapse - government take-overs - religious persecution - gay rights - things that don't really exist right in front of me, but I am sure are existing out there, in the world. These ideas include all of the people in the US or all of the people in the world. I feel like I can observe and describe what I see happening, but I have no way to control any of it. Even though I know these big ideas are REAL, they are so large that they seem unreal. This is the macro.
And of course, the opposite view is the micro. Look around you - what you can see and touch is real real. What are your real problems if you're are only considering yourself? What are your problems if you consider yourself and your home? What if you consider yourself, your home, and your family? What about your neighbors? What about your community?
How much stuff will you know if the television doesn't constantly tell you what you need to know or if you are unable to grab the answers from the internet? If you have no power to your home, will your concerns abandon the macro and focus on the micro?
My advice to everyone is to let go of the macro and focus on the micro. Think small. You cannot help others if you are unable to care for yourself. Are you prepared to face calamity - do you have enough supplies for yourself? for your family? for your neighbors? Do not think: who will help me. Think: who can I help? You help yourself and then you help others and if we can convince everyone to do this, we could meet chaos head on and calm it before it gets out of hand. We are able to control our world - our real world - our micro-world. It is in the micro that you can witness the direct results of your actions - the macro is a distraction.

Why does it have to be one or the other? I agree that we can witness the direct results of our actions with the micro, but if we ignore the macro, we do so to our own detriment.
Specifically regarding your mentioning of religious persecution - how many people being held in hardline countries have been released because of normal people in the west getting involved, writing letters, contacting politicians, etc? I know one man personally, whose family is living in safety right now in a European country after he spent months in a prison for his faith in a repressive country. He was released after a bunch of Christians around the globe petitioned our government to get involved.
I think a balance between the micro and macro is a healthy goal.

Relying on self. Encourage others to rely on self, to help others. The stuff bigger than us, that doesn't directly affect us doesn't matter.
Putting blinders on doesn't help, because eventually the big stuff trickles down to us. We have to deal with the consequences of the big stuff.
I think that you will find that most of us truly only deal with the small stuff on a daily basis. We discuss big stuff here- we don't discuss most of the smaller stuff of life on Topix. I don't dwell on world events or elections on a daily or hourly basis. I don't go to rallies. I stay informed, on top of the news, but don't dwell on it.
Worrying about the big things of the world leads to mental breakdowns. Putting blinders on leads to getting nailed when unprepared.

The government is so big that it is unfathomable. And it extends across national borders via the UN, NATO, and an assortment of other international consortiums.
When I was in the Marines, it became quite clear that the US government is merely "the lead dog" in a pack of wild animals.
Never gonna get fixed.
