A friend of mine is undergoing a 6 hour surgery today. He has cancer. He has lost close to 50 pounds in the past 3 months. They are removing a tumor from his throat. Due to his weakness, they are giving him a 50% chance to pull through the surgery. Please remember him and his family today in prayer. His name is Bud Alley.

His surgery is now in progress. If all goes well, he will remain in CCU for two weeks. He weighs around 80 pounds and in his early 50ís. The doctors postponed his surgery once already due to his weakness. Hopefully today will go well. Pray also for the doctors as this surgery will last well into the afternoon. Again, keep Bud and family in your prayers.

Not unless you think the Book of James is funny.

James 5:14 - Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord

I said a prayer too but the anointing is very serious.

I was given the Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick before my cancer surgery. Good thing too. I had kidney failure during out patient surgery and was in the hospital for 21 days.

Very direct from the Bible.

Do you guys use the word Elder to apply to any of your leaders? I am thinking you call for someone else to do the anointing with oil.

Do Bible churches even have elders?

Priests (presbuteroi) are also known as "presbyters" or "elders." In fact, the English term "priest" is simply a contraction of the Greek word presbuteros.

Yep, I thought it would be something like that. So I guess our elders are as good as a priest then? If a person calls and ask for anointing we will do it-common practice-no...

btw, some coC elders anoint the sick with oil when they pray for them, some in other Churches also do the same for the same reason....

Thanks for asking, Richard. Things didn't go as we hoped. They were not able to remove it all. They give him less than 6 months to live. Please keep his wife and kids in your prayers.

Will do. It sounded very severe. My brother recently lost his wife to cancer - it's really a tough pathway to pass through, but one that really draws us to higher levels of faith. I hope your friend knows the Lord and His love for him... as well as the family.

That's the point many miss. "Let HIM call for the elders of the church". We have people asking if the elders were called- but did the sick person do as scripture dictates and call for them his or her self?

Praying for Bud and family. May God give them peace and comfort, and help Bud through his voyage.
