Oldest universities? Catholic with a few Anglican ones but even then, especially in England, the buildings were constructed by the Catholic Church. In the USA? Catholic, Episcopal/Anglican like William and Mary or secular like Harvard. Church of Christ or the Bible Church has yet to build even its first university! Even Jerry Falwell built one!

The people of the United States give more to private charity than any people on earth. Through taxation, the citizens of the United States give more to assist the less fortunate and provide disaster relief than any nation on earth. This money comes from one source and one source only...CAPITALISM. In the case of taxation the funds are forcibly confiscated at the point of a gun. Donations to charity are freely given.

You guys should really understand that what's going on in our world right now is NOT about politics.
.
It is about good vs evil - as in your eternal salvation.
The dark powers (satan and his minions) are fooling billions of people into jumping on this political bandwagon - as it keeps us at each others' throats and divided.
Satan is all about division - and hatred. Forget white, black, gay, straight, catholic, baptist..... all of those titles do not matter in the least in the big picture.
.
The big picture consists of one thing and one thing only - our eternal salvation - where are we going to choose to spend eternity - Heaven or hell.
.
Time is running out - and sooner or later, ALL of us will have to choose which side we are going to be on.

Alrighty, MarkEden - I watched your movie - it was decent, many quality actors and even a speaking role for Teller. My book should arrive this week or next - I intend to study it - I've been meaning to anyway, thanks for the avid prompting.

So, are you telling me that you and Mike are the "smarties" who get to run off to John Gault-land and leave the rest of us to fend for ourselves? This work of fiction would have us believe that all of society is completely dependent on a select few people. I wonder who cleans toilets and collects garbage in Gault-land - I bet those "smarties" have little experience with those brainless chores. Folks who perform the mundane but necessary functions within society were left behind to take care of the bubble-heads who thought their jobs were important - their jobs that support and carry out the ideas and will of the "smarties". Assuredly, as soon as the bubble-heads find Gault-land, it will be society all over again.

Is that the difference between us, MarkEden? You are a smartie and you think I am a bubble-head who won't let go of your shirt-tale? You've got me all wrong - I'm even lower ranking than bubble-heads. I am one of the leftovers, the mundane, those people on the street selling food and gas. We do whatever we can with whatever we have - we are not making decisions that affect other people's lives, money, jobs, rights, liberties - our decisions usually only affect ourselves and our own families who depend on us.

I work in a grocery store. I could sell groceries for all eternity without guidance from you or even a manager - I think I grasp the concept of selling groceries very confidently. Suppose while I am selling groceries, I start getting bitter about carts of groceries paid for with an EBT card, supplied by the government. No one concerns themselves any more with groceries than I do, but if I want any for myself, I have to use the money I worked for all by giving those same groceries to other people for free! I might think: I'm just as well off to stay home and type on Topix all day (what fun!) instead of bothering with that stupid job! What keeps me going to work, MarkEden? I could make MORE money by selling drugs - perhaps you've seen our movie: Oxyana - it would be easy enough to do. I could work for actual cash and get free government money since my "cash" is black-market and no records are kept of it. The rule of capitalism: gain the most by doing the least is the same logic that motivates crime. Simple, red-neck drug dealers are making a better living than me - and you are trying to accuse me of being one of them as if there are only two kinds of people - John Gault's friends and the rest of us.

Is this your prediction of how the government will gain control of the free market and prevent capitalism from working? I am open to ideas of tiny government - but I accept that our government is not going to get tiny no matter who we vote for. It is my role to carry on despite what the government is doing - not to run and hide in a cave and wait for the stupid people to kill each other. Together, we can prevent the stupid people from killing each other - and us - and keep our heads together is the face of some intense changes. When presented with an opportunity to help people, MarkEden, are you going to go on strike?

Good story, though - I'm really looking forward to that book. You might enjoy another Netflix movie about the near future: Visioneers. Much funnier AND shorter.

AS III is in production. Yesterday, I planted an oak tree. It has a 1" caliper. I will never sit in the shade of that tree but someone might.

On a small scale that is exactly what happens when businesses compete in a free market. Should the government step in and force the most successful business owner to hand over part of his profits to subsidize less successful or even failures to even the playing field, to give everyone a fair share? Should the accumulated wealth of a businessman, on which taxes have already been paid, be forcibly confiscated at his death and redistributed so 50 million people can receive food stamps and keep the ruling class in power?
You see Mark, you can post sensibly when you try.
