DHL layoffs devastate town

Full story: www.bpnews.net

In Wilmington, Ohio, a town of 12,000 people where 8,000 had been employed by DHL, a series of extensive layoffs at the shipping company have left the community experiencing what has been called the trauma of Hurricane Katrina without the physical damage. The two Southern Baptists churches in Wilmington have members who are feeling the direct effects of the layoffs, and the congregations are scurrying to meet needs wherever they can.

Nobody deserves the effects of the recession more than the republican voters who made it happen. If I believed in Karma...

this is crazy. I feel bad for this town, and its horrible. but for a "modern" american town to be so reliant on one employer (despite the history of such failures) is courting disaster. its like the old whaling-fishing towns in the NEast that tried to hold on despite the visible decline in the fish stocks...and when they'd pushed it to near total depletion they cried foul that no one rescued them sooner.

we had a similar problem here years ago on Long Island with grumman being a major employer - once the military, aerospace program changed the region got hit very hard. and the mantra of those employed by grumman was always "oh we have life-time security, the industry and economy will never change." Then wham!

as for the previous poster, thats wrong. all Americans helped with this problem. dems and reps, non-affliated, etc...all americans in and out of govt, sitting on executive boards or in the mail-rooms helped bring on this catastrophe...

its called apathy. the direct result of the American people seeking nothing but to feed their gluttonous appetites, and stop paying attention to how their govt was being run. that too many americans of either party affliation, actually believed we could leave our "employees" to their own devices and that they'd do a good job protecting us.

we handed our country over to these fools, and became absentee owners, "we the people" - became "not now I'm busy watching TV", hitting the malls, buying crap I cant afford because we deserve to live the high-life without the work/effort or recognition of the consequences of our bloated lives.

ABX is not the only employer laying off. I have applied to local jobs only to find out they are laying off too.

I didn't. I voted against Bush both times. I lived within my means. I didn't max out my credit. I never missed a house payment.

As did/do I. but thats not how the rest of the nation behaved in total. its not how the givt behaved. neither party is solely to blame. both are guilty of fixing the system to fail despite clear indicators for years (not just a few months in 08) that the systm was going to collapse, but short-term profits ruled the roost.

the Dems had control of Congress and did zero, couldnt fight back against bush and his cronies, and the Reps sucked down gallons of the kool-aid of this long dead notion of a free-market.(all the while manipulating it whenever they could.)

you and I and a few others might have lived within our means - but the vast majority of Americans refused to.

You're either being dishonest or ignorant. The dems have not had control of congress. They controlled the house since 2006, but not the senate. Both parties had 49 seats from 2006 through 2008, and that's why little got done.

Fox News liked to claim repeatedly that democrats controlled both houses of congress during those two years, banking on American laziness to keep anyone from actually looking it up.

Actual history tells us that the wealth gap narrows when democrats are in power and widens when republicans have the reins. The rich always get richer, but the poor only get poorer under conservative rule. Under liberal rule, everyone gets richer or treads water.

Such compassion for people who think differently than you do. Wishing ill of anyone certainly show us what you are made of.

You're right, I have little compassion for those who make their own messes and then have to lie in them. And I feel no guilt over that.

Just because people may have voted differently than you, you blame them for what you feel is wrong in the world and wish them hardship. You know I don't think I am liking this change very much.

They voted for and supported the policies that put us all in this mess. No sympathy.

Hmmmmmmmmm...That why we ended up going in to a recession several years after a Democratic majority was elected in to the House and Senate...get your facts straight, and don't get political when you obviously haven't done your research

You are once again an idiot...The Senate is comprised of two members from each state. Unless your mind is stuck back in 1948, that means that there are more than 98 members doesn't it? Not to mention that there were several flip flops across party lines during that time frame...

That is called Socialism...If I start a company, why can't I reap the benefits of the profits? Why do I need to be taxed more so that I can support you?

We are amazing after everything we have seen that we still believe a democrat or republican can change America, the only change will come is when we start at local govt. and work up or as a nation we will fail.

Layoffs have about devastated more than one small community.Blaming either Party on this is not taking a large view as to the problem. Both are at fault. Both parties consist of politicians having to put together enough money to make the next run for office as soon as they get into office! Therefore they take from any that will give, the large Companies can give more,so that is where the pols are indebted to these companies!Examples are Freddie,Fannie,AIG,Gm,Chrysler ,Ford, and the Banking Groups such as Merrill Lynch,--why do you think the Pols were so anxious to bail them out?
This system must be changed---take tax money to run for office, limited amount, allocated, time to run limited,no other money could be used or collected.Make it a level playing field! Then we could call the Politicians to task and do the job elected to do!!!
