Katy Miessner, a self-described "financial manager and community advocate" running for a seat on the Vallejo City Council, may have overstated her credentials. Some citizens have questioned whether Miessner indeed is a certified financial manager or merely an experienced bookkeeper and activist relatively new to Vallejo. She appears to have no documented degrees, certifications, or membership in recognized financial management disciplines. Miessner is viewed by many as a disciple of former councilwoman Joanne Schivley, who was soundly defeated in 2011 when she ran for mayor of Vallejo, and present councilwoman Stephanie Gomes, whose term expires this year. Both Schivley and Gomes are noted for their unabashed criticism of public safety unions, Schivley once telling a union official "this means war". Miessner, in her opening press release, makes no reference to Vallejo rising crime rate and declining police presence, offering instead to be an advocate for community involvement in city policy matters.

Miessner has no professional credentials in finance or accounting. NONE. Bookkeeper and activist is more apropos.

we are all "financial managers" when we have income and spending conditions in our lives or businesses. miessner is stretching a routine function into some sort of requisite skill qualifying her for a seat on council. she is no more than an extension of gomes so gomes can continue trying to run the show after she terms. these people are all newcomers that thought they could change our city to suit their ideology. it has not and will not work. we need jobs for the masses, not high tech development under some delusion that it will attract other educated elites like themselves to settle here and drive off the economically challenged. never going to happen.

Silicon Valley is doing quite well, thank you, with high-tech employment, and why shouldn't Vallejo follow that model? It all started with entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley forming businesses in their (parent's) garages, then getting access to VC funding, soon becoming legitimate home-grown businesses. As a result, the education and salary level in Silicon Valley has improved and made that part of the Bay Area the economic engine we see today. So why shouldn't Vallejo follow suit? The traditional route isn't working in Vallejo. The Vallejo school district is an embarrassment; why hasn't the Vallejo school district leveraged the six high school "academies" into a model similar to a Silicon Valley entrepreneur engine? City Hall and City Council has failed to set policy to jumpstart economic growth and development for 21st century work world. Grow the economic pie or die. This is why Vallejo continues to fail, and will be seeking Chapter 9 bankruptcy again in five years.

The next time they bring up the Temple Arts Loft or the so-called "arts district" for downtown, you can put this information to the people promoting "artists" and ask them to respond to that information. It's clear that Vallejo's future is in developing the technical fields. We have the Vallejo high school "academies" that helps Vallejo high school students develop technical skills. That is Vallejo's economic future.

this whole business of "artists only" housing has a smell to it. it is an ambivalent term anyway. i expect a challenge under the "fair housing" laws under h.u.d. the advocates of this deal are clearly using a publicly funded building to discriminate. i welcome dissenting opinions or giving me a clue why i am wrong.
