Vallejo police pursue burglary suspects to Albany, Concord

Vallejo police arrested two men Tuesday and are searching for another after a lengthy pursuit through much of the East Bay.

The incident began at about 2:15 a.m. when witnesses saw a red van parked in front of Mach 1 Motorsports, 510 Couch St., Vallejo. Witnesses told dispatchers that the men in the van appeared to be stealing from the store, police said.

When officers arrived, they spotted the red van as well as another vehicle. When they tried to stop them, they fled, eventually entering westbound Interstate 80, police said.

The suspect vehicles crossed the Carquinez Bridge, and Vallejo officers were joined by those from the California Highway Patrol, police said.

Eventually, officers caught up to one of the suspect cars near Solano Avenue in Albany, arresting Glen Ramirez, 43, and Michael Dewitt, 37, of Vallejo. Officers determined they were in possession of stolen property from the store, and the two were booked on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy and possession of stolen property.

Meanwhile, the van continued west on Interstate 80, switching onto Highway 24 and, eventually, northbound Interstate 680, police said.

Police lost sight of the van somewhere in Concord. However, it was eventually found abandoned near a Concord elementary school, police said.

During the search for the suspect around the area of the elementary school, a Vallejo officer severely injured his hands as he tried to climb a cyclone fence, not seeing the barbed wire on top, police said.

That officer has been placed on medical leave, and police are still searching for the third suspect.
