Vallejo's Kennedy library consolidating

The John F. Kennedy Library in Vallejo is consolidating all services to one floor. The project began last Monday and is expected to be completed this summer.

The change will improve convenience for customers, make it easier for families to use the library together and increase security.

"In our current layout, the children's section and customer service desks are located on different floors," said Peggy Yost, the library's deputy director of public services. "After the remodel, everything will be a distance of a few steps rather than a trip up the stairs or on the elevator."

When the consolidation is completed, children's books and DVDs will be on the main floor. This area will continue to operate a computer center, group study rooms, teen reading area, a customer service section and reference/information desks.

An expanded story time room, an additional study room, new bathrooms (including one for families) and a Friends of the Library bookstore will be added.

During construction, all operations will be on the ground floor of the building, where the children's section is currently located. The library's full collection of children's books, DVDs and school support materials will be available, along with regular story times and other programs for youth. The Joseph Room will also be available.

For adults, additional computers will be installed and a small collection of DVDs and new books will be available for checkout. Customers can also order books and DVDs from other libraries, by phone, online or in person, and check them out on the ground floor.

"We know Vallejo folks love their JFK Library," Yost said. "We think the convenience of everything on one floor plus amenities like new bathrooms and a store for the Friends of the Library will improve their trips to the library even more. We'll also be saving them money because services such as reference and customer service staffing will no longer be duplicated on two floors."

The remodel is being paid for through a combination of funds from Solano County Library's operating budget and Vallejo's Measure B sales tax. The city of Vallejo, which owns the building, will determine how the empty space will be used, once the consolidation is complete.

“Here's a interesting thought..”

Great news for you Sammy. With consolidated space and more computers, you will be able to target more 12 year old girls for your vile rantings.
