Vallejo company will play key role in Bay Bridge fix

A Vallejo company that loves big jobs is ready to "work around the clock" to help fix broken bolts on the eastern span of the Bay Bridge, its owner said Friday.

XKT Engineering, a steel fabricator on Mare Island, has been selected to provide components for custom-made steel saddles that will be used to fix failed anchor rods.

"We still haven't seen the drawings ... so there is going to be a real crunch once we get turned loose to fabricate as fast as we can," company owner Al Bottini said. "I'm sure we'll be working around the clock. It's a lot of machining."

The firm, which has about 60 employees, is working with main bridge contractor American Bridge-Fluor Joint Venture on the project. Caltrans estimated the fix will cost as much as $10 million.

XKT, which occupies a former U.S. Navy factory once used to fabricate submarine hulls, is no stranger to bridge work. The company has assisted on seismic retrofits for a number of Bay Area bridges and provided steel and pilings for the new Benicia-Martinez and the Carquinez spans, Bottini said.

"We provided 5,000 tons of steel on the retrofit of the south Golden Gate Bridge anchorage," he said, referring to a project that wrapped up in 2008.

He added that the company, one of just a handful on the West Coast specializing in bridge fabrication, previously manufactured skyway piles, expansion joints and service platforms on the new bridge.

On Thursday afternoon, workers stood on newly installed platforms on the massive pier east of the main span, drilling holes into concrete that they will use to strap down exterior saddles on the two seismic stabilizers to compensate for the broken bolts.

The saddles are designed to carry the load intended for the 96 huge threaded high-strength anchor rods -- 3 inches in diameter and 17 to 24 feet long -- inside shear keys positioned between the pier's columns and the bridge deck. The shear keys and adjacent bearings work together to control movement during an earthquake.

The saddle will cradle 430 steel rope strands made of steel twice as strong as the 96 anchor bolts. The strands will be anchored on the outside of the pier cap and covered with reinforced concrete.

The design is still being tweaked and it's unclear when the saddle will be finished.

It still remains unclear if the fix and other tests on steel fasteners on the bridge will be completed in time for the scheduled Sept. 3 bridge opening.

Why is it that there is never enough money to do it right the first time but always enough money to do it over ? liberal incompetence will kill us all, don't ever travel across this new bridge, two have fallen this week do you want to be it when it goes into the bay ? never believe anything a liberal/democrat tells you, they lie they have to

It's "not" a Vallejo, read the story the company is from out of state but on leases a building on MI to do this work. but the bolts are still crap and will now costs the taxpayers billions more in time lost and money wasted and the question remains, will the bridge be safe ? trust a liberal politician, I think not!
