Vallejo lauds students gaining English fluency

More than 400 Vallejo students reached English proficiency this year -- a fact celebrated Friday by the Vallejo City Unified School District.

"Thank you for everything you did to prepare for this year," said Steffan Manor Elementary School Principal Lucius McKelvy as he handed his students certificates marking their achievement.

Last year, there were more than 2,300 English language learners in the district, or about 15.6 percent of total enrollment, according to the state Department of Education.

The state requires those students to take an English skills test called the California English Language Development Test, or CELDT, in which students are placed into five different categories ranging from "beginning" to "advanced."

To be reclassified as fluent in English, students must score in the fourth level or higher on the CELDT as well as score "basic" on California standardized tests.

On Friday, the district recognized the students who achieved this status by hosting an awards ceremony and reception. Principals called up their students, who took their certificates and shook hands with various district dignitaries.

Among them was Vallejo school board member Tony Ubalde, himself a former English language learner (Tagalog is his native language). Ubalde praised the work of the students, as well as the program in general -- a program he did not have growing up.

"You know how I knew I was proficient in English? It's when I started dreaming in English," Ubalde said.

His comments were translated by Cave Language Academy Principal Lorena Hernandez, who served as the event's emcee.

Students from Cave's Bailes Folclóricos program also entertained the crowd with dances.

Wonder what the true costs are to "educate" a moron to the extent they can order a burrito from a taco truck. I say give up on them, sink or swim, learn to speak or live like your stinking predessors. If these "graduates" actually did gain something from this waste of OUR tax dollars why was there a need for an "interpreter"?
