A 41-year-old Vallejo man was wounded in a shooting by an officer early Saturday.

Police said the incident began at about 1:33 a.m. when the patrolling officer saw a reported stolen 1999 Nissan Sentra on Lincoln Road West. He then followed the car into the parking lot of a motel in the 200 block of Lincoln Road West.

The officer told the driver to stop as he was exiting the car. However, the man allegedly did not comply, and ran through the motel complex instead.

Police said the officer saw a silver weapon protruding from his back pocket, and the suspect reaching into his waistband.

The officer then Tasered the suspect, which did not stop the suspect, police said. He continued to run through the complex, and at some point "spun toward the officer and pointed his right arm toward him with a silver object in his hand," police said.

The officer fired one round at the suspect, "concerned that the suspect was armed," striking him, police said.

The suspect sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital, police said.

Police said the suspect was holding a set of keys in his hand, and a silver bladed knife with a brown handle was found in his pocket.

In accordance with department protocol, the incident is being investigated by the Solano County District Attorney's Office and the Vallejo Police Department. The uninjured officer, a six-year veteran, has been placed on paid administrative leave, police said.

The suspect is on active Contra Costa County probation, police added. He had previously been convicted of charges, including false imprisonment, auto vehicle theft, narcotics and brandishing replica firearms, police said.

No new information will be released until Tuesday, according to a press release.
