Those girls, with the exception of two are bitchy, snobby and rude. Ever since that place changed hands they have gone for a fancy look inside but the customer service and packages have suffered. I signed a contract but when it is up, I'm gone. I have spoken to a few others who have also received poor service with a bad attitude. Have you?

Well, all of us current/former Sun Shop customers are going to have to face it. It will never be the same place since Reed is gone. The new owners get kudos for refurbishing, but that's where the compliments end. One of the best employees Reed had (the Cartmell girl) was let go because she had a couple other part time jobs and the new owner didn't approve. They abolished the 600 minute package, which was the best value. Now they want to push that unlimited tanning package where they take the money out of your checking account every month. They installed Sirius radio with no option in the individual booths for adjusting volume or changing stations. Now you are at the mercy of what ever the employee(s) want to listen to.(Listen to the Lady GaGa refrain, "I want to ride your disco stick!") They started making you furnish your own sunnies (goggles), which is a hassle. They have a list of overly officious rules posted in all the booths. One of which is "No outside lotion allowed, must be checked at the desk", or something to that effect. In other words, if you don't buy your lotion from us at inflated salon prices instead of purchasing it on the internet, you can't tan here.(Of course, I don't know how they expect their employees to monitor and enforce this.) This would make me leery, even if I were a new customer, because people who formulate extensive lists of rules they want enforced usually have a control obsession. This type of management style is a big turn off to customers. I could go on, but why bother? You get the idea by now. You could do what I and several other tanners did and go to Been to the Beach. Ben and his staff are miles friendlier than the Sun Shop and the place is just as nice or nicer on the inside. They've never questioned me about where I chose to purchase my lotion (This is still a free country isn't it?), or made me feel like I have to study up on a rulebook like there is a test next Tuesday. They do have the Sirius radio, but the atmosphere is absent the stiff, sorority girl attitude. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Where is been to the beach? I would like to go elsewhere. You are right. There is a lot to be said for small town hospitality. That's what reed had. I have noticed there are no chairs and places to sit in there. I've also noticed there's no need for any, unlike when reed ran the place, there's not people waiting to tan...

It's in UC in the shopping center where JC Penny's and the Giant Flea Market are. It may not be an option for those who aren't in UC on a regular basis like I am. You are right about people waiting to tan at the Sun Shop. The only time I have seen anyone waiting was that day during the Soy Bean Festival when they had $1 tanning. You used to have a hard time finding a place to park in the parking lot across the street when Reed operated it. Now you can usually park at the front door on the street. One thing I didn't mention in my previous post. Reed used to keep the bulbs changed every 5-6 months. I don't think most of the beds have had the bulbs changed since he died.

Guess what they pulled on their customers this weekend. My neighbor tans there. She drove into Martin to tan about 5:15 pm Saturday afternoon and the place was locked tighter than a drum. Lights out, no one on duty. No sign on the door, no apologies, nothing. They were supposed to be open until 7 pm. Boy, was she p.o.'d! I don't blame her. She said when she finishes her minutes, she is going somewhere else.

I had a complaint..called asked to speak to manager. I was never called back, so I called them. Girl (who was rude from the get go) said the manager didn't deal with issues at home and she was home and would call me back the next day. Guess what that was a week ago I've yet to get a call. I will go back to Lanas!

Sun Shop and Express Tan are very much alike. Customers who used to tan at Sunshop are going to have to get used to changes. Everything cannot stay the same. Express Tan has improved alot, the place is a lot cleaner than sunshop ever was. When they are talking about checking your lotions, they just want to make sure you are not using a oil when tanning in the beds. The oil DOES NOT come off the tanning beds when you clean them. They do not care if you buy lotions from other places, thats not what they are talking about. About the googles, it is not sanitary to use the same googles other customers use. The employees can have their moments, but are usually never rude unless the customer gets smart with them about something and then they dont know what to say back. Sometimes its not an easy job when you are getting yelled at because it not exactly how you want it. The reason the door was closed and locked up with the lights out on saturday january 30th, is because there was snow and ice on the roads and they were not able to get to work. The packages are not that much different from sunshop. yes they have the vip packages where it can come out of your account but they also have regular minute packages you had before. It just gives customers options. The VIP packages give the regular customers a chance to tan unlimited in a regular level one. Express tan has not gave me any trouble, yes there are changes but a change can be good for everyone. Every business is ran different and each will have pro and cons.

You are wrong on several counts. First, customers DO NOT "have to get used" to anything, as you so arrogantly put it. Customers are the ones who allow the owners and employees of the Sun Shop to have a paycheck. They do the Sun Shop a favor by their patronization, not the other way around. Your attitude demonstrates what is wrong with small businesses today. Small wonder many fail. Secondly, no one is complaining about changes or improvements. If you read the previous posts it is obvious that customers don't view the changes as improvements. Thirdly, you are inaccurate about the packages. The new owners DID remove the 600 minute package. That was the best value of all the packages. In eliminating that choice, it was a de facto price increase. If the Sun Shop is so big on giving customers choices, why did they kill the best choice? Fourthly, are you saying the above customer was able to arrive at the Sun Shop in the snow, but the employees couldn't come to work? Were the conditions any worse for the employee(s) than they were for the customers? Wise up, sir/madam. You're defense of this way of doing business and treating customers diminishes your credibility.

I only meant that every business runs his or her business in a different way. This is their way of running there business. I think change in a small town is hard to get used to. I grew up in a small town all my life and i hate change at first but when you start getting used to it and look at the positive outcomes it's not so bad. I am sure that when the employees that worked for sunshop started working for express tan..it was a big difference also. So it wasnt only the customers who didn't like the change. I have been in the store here recently and noticed they have tons of customers there. They always seem friendly when i go in. And i am not saying tht if a customer could get there, that the employee couldnt. But maybe the customer had a truck or something and the employee didnt. There were tons a businesses closed for the snow and ice. I dont think we should ditch the business bc of that matter. And about the 600 min. package, i never seen that package up there b4 when i used to tan there. They had a 500 min and a 300 mins. The only reason people bought the 500 was because you could do the half now half later kinda thing. But i dont see how he made much money doing that. he may of, who knows.. i liked sunshop just as much as everyone else.. but i also like the way express tan is now.

All this sounds like you work there or are close to someone who does. Seems like you knew exactly what happened on Jan. 30th. Running a business under the guise of being "different" and having different "pros and cons" doesn't justify doing things in a way that don't meet the needs of the paying customers.

I have been there 3 separate days at 730 in the morning and the place had not been opened yet. They are supposed to open at 7. Before the employee comes on here and says it was the weather, I had just dropped kids off at school. I watched as 4 other people went to the locked door and left. As far as the old employees "getting used" to the new ways, where are those people? Oh that's right, they don't work there anymore. Thoars girls are hateful and stick on themselves. The blonde chick with the turned up nose and face full of makeup is the worst. The tall brunette that I think is pregnant is bad too. There's literally two people there who act like they are glad you came. Brittany? Bethany? Something like that. This has nothing to do with renovations or "improvements" it has to do with SERVICE. And like the other poster said, I DON'T have to get used to ANYTHING! Ill go where my business is appreciated.

I have tanned at this location for several years, when Reed owned it and now. There are changes there but they are for the good of their business. I have never heard any employee be rude or disrespectful to anyone. As for the shop maybe not being open on time, things happen some days, ever had car trouble or gotten a ticket going somewhere. Give me a break on that issue, especially if the weather was bad. If you don't like it there then find someplace you would like better and tan there.

Up at night: I have. And for your information, just because you haven't seen anyone be rude DOESN'T mean that others haven't. AND I completely understand that "things" happen, but this is a pattern. And it is not only when there is bad weather. Just lazy employees. As for those who are still stuck in the contract, I'm sure they wish they could just go someplace else. I finally got out of mine.

Unlimited isn't as great a deal as the former 600 minute package. You would have to go every other day all month just to break even. Do the math.
