How is it legal for the Corp of Engineer to bring in a demolition company and start tearing down houses on Jennys Street in Martin which still has residents living there? Most of the old houses on that street contain asbestos. The house across from the old police station that was plowed over yesterday contained asbestos but the Mi-De Con. company are claiming that the Thermal Solution company removed the asbestos today. From what I saw, some men went into that house and another house on Jennys Street, with no masks, no protective covering around the house and came out with some garbage bags of maaterial that they threw in the back of a trailer. This is supposed to convince me that all of the asbestos was removed and done so properly?? The EPA was informed and they were surprised to learn that any demolition was even going on yesterday because they had not been notified and the proper papers had not been submitted....how odd?? The EPA also stated that the houses should have been sprayed down with water during the demolition to minimize the spread of any airborne materials....that didn't happen either.

It's truly a disgrace that the Corp of Engineers can stand by and say that they do not have the funds to relocate the few remaining residents of this street, but they can certainly afford to pay a construction company to come in out of Ohio and start demolitions. If these few residents were relocated, they could come through and plow down the entire street. Instead, they are picking a few random houses to knock down which are right in the middle of occupied homes. What's the purpose? They can't proceed with any of the project until all residents are relocated, so why not move them and do all of the demolition at one time which would not put any of these people in harms way.

I urge the residents of Martin to either stay in your homes for the next few days or leave for a few days or be at risk of asbestos exposure. It's unreal that this is being allowed to go on, I truly feel for those remaining residents there. It's unfortunate for them that they were not a family member to the mayor of Martin or a city employee, because all of those individuals were the first to be removed from the area....how ironic.

Removing the asbestos would not be a signification risk to the employees or the surrounding neighbors so long a proper precautions are taken. The EPA is correct it should be wet down and the employees should be using the proper PPE.If the Asbestos is only ACM (asbestos containing Material)then there shouldn't be a whole lot to worry about as the asbestos is contained in the material such a floor tiles. If the asbestos is friable then yes it could become airborne and be inhaled. This is the type you find in insulation and pipe wrapping.
I don't see the corp of engineers allowing them to rip out friable asbestos. If this company is removing asbestos without the proper PPE and endangering its employees then that would be a matter for OSHA. 29 CFR 1926.1101 reg for asbestos in the construction industry.

well the asbestos wasnt tiles..it was insulation and yes airborne risk. the epa had to step in and stop them wanting to know why they hadnt submitted the proper paperwork..thats alittle strange..no way to explain that one..but thanks for the regs, they are a good reference if youre reading books and not really applying them in the real world.

the entire martin demolition/rebuilding has been a taxpayer funded fiasco.lining many peoples pockets with federal money, then not getting the job done.very expensive turn around on the hill was about all that was done.they could have built a floodwall along the creek for much less. an investigation into where the funds went to and to whom they went to needs to be done. i have called our senators and congressmen about this embarrassing situation.everybody that had access jumped in to rip taxpayers off line their own pockets. these folks need to go to prison.
