Some parents in the Mt. Vernon School District say they are outraged that Washington Elementary School Principal Terry Eisenbarth according to their children has been spanking them with a paddle on their birthday's. "Our kids were told to turn around and possibly bend over and get a whammy in order to get the pencil or the calculator," says Steve ...

Why can't anyone say what this is really about? Trial lawyers, and a quick payday. These "concerned" parents failed to mention that they are suing for monetary damages. Nuisance lawsuits need to stop now! Tort reform must be supported in our great state.

I find it insulting that this news story is followed by a Google ad that questions the implicitly credibility of the story: "Video features lawyers explaining how they win false abuse cases." This spanking is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the way that this principal is dismantling an excellent school. "Moms" would do well to listen to the whole story. Thank you to these parents for speaking out.

I have worked with this guy at a previous school and he is inappropriate on so many levels. Its not only the spanking with his "whampus" - Mount Vernon citizens should look more into why he was "let" go at the past schools he worked at....you would be quite interested to know there is a pattern of inappropriate behavior...

The law suit is NOT for a "quick pay day!" I know this family that is sueing. Trust me! They don't need the money. There are issues here that you don't know about!

In the words of a parent: To the question, why didn't the kids say anything, I reply if you know kids, you know it's any number of reasons, but the fact is, most just will notÖthatís how the bad guys get away with stuff. They pick on kids because kids will go mute. They think itís normal or they think they are powerless or they want the candy or the calculator or they are simply doing what theyíre told. They are silent because they are afraid or they are protecting their parents, or they have come to see it as the new normal.
In any case, who would they tell given the fact that it's their principal? They canít tell the principal. They canít tell the person watching. So, they are keeping quiet.- end parent reponse

This man is inappropriate, unprofessinoal and I fear he is mentally ill. I am sickened and saddended that there are people like Terry Eisenbarth that work with children.

To "worked with this guy" from Iowa City, IA... your last comment said it all: Terry Eisenbarth is mentally ill and its unfortunate that he keeps getting passed from school district to school district. It is about time that someone reports him and I really hope he will finally be out of schools once and for all!!!

In this entitlement society who sues because "money is needed?"
If these parents were concerned about removing a horrific principal (we agree) why line their pockets with the school system's money? Perhaps, instead of select parents receiving "compensation" from the school insurance policy, our community as a whole could benefit. Perhaps arbitration. Perhaps writing letters of complaint to the school board. The board will listen, resulting in a decision without money exchanging hands.
On the other hand the attorney's (American Association for Justice?) 60 percent cut would be spent outside our school community.

This is the ultimate in bullying. An adult in a position of power humiliating/hurting a child. The man needs some intense therapy at best, and at the least to lose his job.

Simply a matter of not knowing right from wrong.

Would anyone pay attention if the parents sued for an apology?

As one who did file a complaint, compensation of any kind was not involved. Bullying, Harassment, Bigotry...is why we filed. Mental harassment of children is more painful with longer effects than some physical abuse...which is what it is in our case.

No one will get rich off of this one, as the parents are doing this to save the school, not milk it. It is costing THEM a great deal. The principal has has brought deep stress and sadness into our lives by the treatment of our child. We are GREATFUL to the family who sued. This man needs to go!!

To Families of Mount Vernon that have figured out what Terry Eisenbarth is all about:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU....from all of us (adults and children) that have had to endure the bullying and harassment from this guy. His PATTERNS of inappropriate behavior need to stop! I hope this issue will get the man out of our schools for good!

Unfortunately, the board hasn't listened. Complaints have been given to the superintendent and the board throughout the entire year. Instead of repremanding the bully, Mr. Eisenbarth, the staff have been forced to sit through meetings with Terry, where it is pinned back on the teachers. It is absolute craziness. Unfortunately the media had to get involved to get their attention!

Dear Mom,
What do you say now that you have read how this pattern of manic behavior has been documented at school districts prior to MV? Now that you know that the law suit is not for any monetary gain, what do you say to that? Do you really know the things that this individual has said to staff, students and parents? Unless you support bigotry, racism and bullying tactics, I doubt you would be in support of this man.

This has been a long tradition that started with Mr. Cullen years ago. I don't think he (Mr. E)trys to embarrass the kids rather then something memorial for the kids to remember as I remember. If you were truly from Mt. Vernon you would understand. Let me guess???? This family has only lived in Mt.Vernon for less then 6 years. Our daughter thought it was funny and couldn't wait to go to school on her birthday.
If the family doesn't NEED the money, then why sue? We including them will be the ones paying. Just thank that family when our taxes for our school district go up even higher. It's like a Mt. Vernon tradition ask anyone that went to school there 20 plus years ago.....

As a graduate of MVHS having gone to school from K-12, I have to ask what one of the previous comments was about. I went to Washington Elementary in the 70's with Joe Cullen being the principle and not once in my years there did I receive a birthday spanking nor did any of my sibblings or even friends for that matter. If this happened, then it was after I moved on to middle school. Never has this been mentioned before and from the sounds of things, these birthday spankings came with the present principle. I am not calling the person a liar, I'm simply saying Ive never heard of Joe doing anything similar to what Mr. E has done.

I have never supported this man. But I believe you are applying the same bullying tactics you supposedly abhor. Arbitration, mediation, letter to the proper authorities--- not good enough. Quick call a lawyer....
Interesting how many "psychiatrists" we have diagnosing this principal as mentally ill. Sounds slanderous.
As to your initial issue with bulling , bigotry and "Raaaaasism". Just how much time did your child spend with the principal? Was he tutoring him privately?
You are now complaining that FOR the staff. You are a super hero, dude.

How much will the school spend to address these complaints...didn't this start out as just a tap with a sports wand?

Yep, it will cost the district and us taxpayers, but if there had been a response from Pam Ewell (call me Dr.) in an appropriate and timely manner, instead of her trying to cover it up by just scolding him or what ever she did then no one would have felt the need to make it a public case.

Mr. E has poor judgement and has been a bad administrator. What caused this to become a district wide issue is that his supervisor failed in her duty to report up the chain of command, and allowed him to continue abuses of power which were not limited to his hockey stick. Now if everybody just holds judgement, or passes on what they know to the school board instead of tearing down Mr. E's victims we can get through this as a community and work to rebuild what is a great town and school district.
