Why should he do something for a town that kicked him out? Randy was a hellraiser in his younger days, got into trouble and the town kicked him out. He said "good ridence" and headed to Nashville. So what should he do? Tell Marshvegas to kiss his rich ass; thats been done.

He still comes to Marshville once or twice a year to see his family. Yes, I am sure he had some hard feelings about being an outcast but that was in his younger days before Miss Lib came into his life. Randy is a changed man now and I'm sure he regrets some of the things he did back in his Marshville days. We all have our regrets about our past. Unfortunately in life there aren't any "do overs" so it is best to go on and try to forgive.

When people find out I am from Marshville the next thing out of their mouth is "Do you know Randy Travis"? To answer your original question, yes Randy HAS done something for Marshville. He put us on the map because every country music fan in America knows Randy Travis is from my hometown, Marshville, NC.

Oh, and yes. I do know Randy (Traywick) Travis. As a child he taught me to shoot marbles and how to cheat playing cards. He told me my first "dirty" joke when I was about 10. I laughed but I didn't understand it. Later I innocently told the joke to my mother and got a whipping for saying dirty words. Randy grew up and had older friends when I was still just a kid. I would see him but the age difference made it hard for us to remain friends. Randy ran with a rough crowd.

Oh, and one more thing. If you don't understand the nickname I'm using you aren't from around here.

Randy and all of us learned the words to a lot of songs and the guitar chords for them watching "Carolina Calling" with Brother Ralph on the accordian, Little Wayne Hass on the bass, Tommy Faile on the rhythm guitar, Arthur Smith on the lead guitar, Don Ange on the piano and "Cloudy" McClain announcer brought to you by Bost Bread, Tube Rose Snuff and Park and Shop.

BTW for all of you 1950's-1960's Marshvillians there is an Arthur Smith tribute page on facebook--There is also one for Joey the Clown and Fred Kirby and the Little Rascals! Great Fun!

I remember when Arthur Smith and the Crackerjacks came to Marshville School gym to perform. Now how many of you remember that?

I listen to country music all the time. KAT is my favorite radio station. They don't play a lot of Randy Travis songs. They play songs by singers like in their 20s and 30s. Mostly like Brad Pagely, Keith Urban, Kenny Chestney and Carrie Underwood. Randy Travis is like old so they don't play his music much. They quit playing Rheba when she got old. I guess they are trying to get younger listeners is why they do it.

Would that have been in about 1959 or 1960?

I picked guitar with Randy, a man named Jack Whitley and two other people one night at a old house out near Fairfield. There were several others there just watching or singing along. This was before he went to Charlotte. There was plenty of liquid refreshments consumed. Jack Whitley was a great picker. He picked all the breaks. he had the best sounding D-28 Martin Herringbone I ever heard. If I remember right Randy had an old beat up dark sunburst Gibson. One of the other fellows played guitar and sometimes sawed a fiddle. We picked all night because we were having a good time and probably to drunk to drive home. I went in the army and the next time I saw Mr. Traywick was on stage at a club in Charlotte. When the band finished the set he and I talked and he told me they were going to Nashville to record. That's been a long, long time ago. I don't know if he remembers me or not but I sang tenor to him back at that old house and he thought I did pretty good or at least he told me I did.
