I know a bit on what actually happened... the girl (Of one of Marshville's "upstanding" families...was caught having sex with Blacks... She declared that "It was Rape"... so that is why they ware "executed" there... I even know the family names of Two of those who perpetrated this "horror" upon our town

One of the stories I heard growing up was about a black man named Ernest Jackson who in the 1920's had a still on the creek and made some of the best moonshine in these parts. Ernest and his 2 sons ran the still and they had a old hound dog that would let out a howl if anybody got near it.

One night they are working hard and the dog starts howling so they grab their guns and lie down in a ditch One of the boys is so scared he gets to trembling and his gun goes off so everybody starts shooting but it is so dark they can't see what they are shooting at.

After a while Ernest sees somebody waving a white cloth like a surrender so they stop firing. It is Ernest's wife and she has been shot several times. She goes to Ernest and slips and falls in the creek where she dies. Ernest was not a religious man so he didn't have a funeral. They just left her body in the creek.

After several months her body decayed away but her head stayed at the bottom of the creek staring at everybody who comes there. Years later people would go to the creek to see the head staring up from beneath the water...and that's how it got the name.

I had never heard that story...Thank you for sharing ... the one I told...as a very small child all of my neighbors were elderly... and I overheard these women talking on the subject a few times ... if and when they discovered that I too was listening they would change the subject of their talk... I heard more than a few things that as a small child that I wished that I had never heard.... As I said I know a Lot of old dark Family "Secrets" on the families of this town... Which for the most part ...I intend to keep to myself...

I have heard that story many times and have been there looking for Sadie's head. The ladies name was Sadie Jackson according to my grandmother. My granny used to live near where Sadie was killed when she was a little girl. She said her brothers used to scare her to death telling the ghost story about Sadie and taking her and her sister to the creek. She said she never saw Sadie's head but they spent hours looking for it. The place where Sadie's head was seen is right off of 205. You turn on the road to the right right before the bridge called the Batchelor road. Go and then turn left and follow it to the end. It ends in the woods right above the creek. There is a path that takes you to Sadie's head. It's kind of a spooky place anyway.

Do you know where David's Nursery was way out 205. There is a bridge just past it. That's Salem Creek (Old Negro Head Creek). Right before you get there there is a road to the right that kind of goes up a hill. That's Bachelor Rd. Go in there and follow it until you get to a road on the left. Go down that road until it ends in a little patch of woods. Get out and follow the path down to the creek. The still was on the bank of the creek. On the left is kind of a low place where people used to cross the creek in wagons. That's where Sadie was supposed to have fallen and drowned after she got shot. It's shallow there so I never believed she could have drowned there but that's what the legend says. My granny said she never saw Sadie's head but a lot of others claimed to have seen it.

My daddy claimed to have seen Sadie's head rise up out of the creek when he was a boy. He said it scared him so bad he had a shaking spell and couldn't sleep for a week. He said he and his friends used to fish up and down the creek. They had heard the story but didn't believe in ghosts. One day they had been fishing up on the New Salem side but wasn't getting any bites so he decided to cross and go on downstream. He said he got to the narrow place in the deep shade and started across. He heard something move in the water to his right but didn't look because he was watching where he stepped on the rocks. He said just as he jumped up on the bank he felt a cold chill run down his back and turned to see a dark shadowy head with two bulging white eyes starring at him. He said he dropped his pole and lit out for home as hard as he could run. I asked him if he yelled out and he said no, he was to scared. He said he got to the house and my grandmaw tried to calm him down. He swore it was true.

I have heard the story of the Negro's head since I was a little boy. We went looking for it several times. Salem Creek is a spooky place anyway. There are places there that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Our old dog would follow us everywhere but he wouldn't go down the side of that creek for nothing.

I emailed the TV show Paranormal Detectives about it. I haven't heard back. It would be a good place to look for haints. There are other ghost stories up that way. Lawyer Bobby Griffin writes about them sometimes in the Marshville paper. He claims to have seen a haint when he was a kid.

Did a google search and Bachelor Knob Rd does not have any road to the left or end near a path. It ends at a house and I bet people wold not be too happy to have strangers driving through their front yard.

Or am I on the wrong track?

Ok, no but it is just a one lane dirt road with no name that goes off to the left before you get to the farm. If you look at the Google satellite map you can just barely make it out. At the end of where it says Batchelor Knob Rd. you can hardly see anything because of the trees BUT look carefully and you can see a thin line going off toward the creek.

I did a Google Earth search a few months ago, and it looks like the bridge right near there has collapsed into the river!

A haint is an old timey word that means a ghost or spirit. My gradpaw liked to tell of the time he and a friend were way out in the country rabbit hunting. They had run out of water and were thirsty but they saw an old well in the woods. This was sort of near Allen's Crossroads back in the early 1950's. When they got close to the well they saw something move and then it rose up from the inside of the well. He described it as looking like a silver-while cloud or mist but it was shaped like a man with a head, shoulders and arms. He said it made a low moaning sound. Grandpaw and his friend run off as fast as they could and their dogs passed them getting to the truck which was over a mile away. He said them old rabbit dogs wouldn't go anywhere near that place again.

A year or two later he and a bunch of his buddies went looking for the old well and walked all over those woods but never found it. He swore it was true.
