We need this bypass. Is there anything an average citizen can do to speed this up? It is ridiculous. If the bypass were in place, the elderly would not have to drive in all the commuter traffic and big trucks to get to their appointments, they could go up Hwy. 74 without all the additional traffic. Hwy. 74 would then be for the locals and the bypass for all the heavy traffic and trucks and such just "passing" through!

I found a way to bypass all of that traffic and all those stoplights. It is all country 2 lane roads but no stoplights and pretty countryside plus you save about 5-10 minutes if you don't get behind somebody going slow or a tractor.
If you are coming from I-485 go one exit past the Monroe exit to the Idlewild Road exit. Follow Idlewild road. It will change names to Secret Shortcut Road follow it until you reach Fowler Rd on your left. Turn on Fowler. Follow it to Ridge Rd. turn right on Ridge and cross 601. The name of the road changes to Baucom Deese Rd. follow it to Highway 200. Turn right and follow 200 until you get to Monroe-Olive Branch Rd on your left. Turn onto Monroe-Olive Branch and follow it to Austin Chaney. Turn right and follow Austin Chaney into Wingate.
I do not agree with you. Travelling this route is very dangerous without stop lights or stop signs. You may think this is funny to post routes for people to drive through these narrow country roads and get them selves into serious accidents. These roads are country roads for a reason. They are not supposed to be heavily travelled, they don't have sidewalks or bike lanes. Sending commuters through these roads are very very dangerous. You may want to travel these roads if you like. But, please drive speed limit or slower because country folks LIVE and walk these roads pretty often, please do not run into one of them. They deserve to live too. Please be careful if you intent to drive this route on a regular basis. Children often play and we country people like to think we can go for walks without being run over by a driver.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with the construction of the bypass. This bypass have been on the books for over 20 years. What is going on.... I thought our Pres is all for good roads and getting jobs to areas where it is most needed. Does anyone cares about the poor folks in Union County?

Construction workers are eagerly waiting to start working on this bypass. We need the bypass and the jobs tha will come with it.

The merchants along US 74 in Monroe have fought it but they've finally thrown in the towel.
Those Monroe merchants are going to lose a lot of business when those cars and trucks speed down the toll road at 70 miles an hour and bypass all those businesses on Roosevelt Boulevard.
The businesses and strip malls crowded on US 74 in Monroe will be like their counterparts in Rockingham NC when the toll road is finished.
You are kidding, right? The very LAST THING I want to do when I am stuck in traffic on 74 is patronize a business alongside the road. I want to get where I am going. In fact, I seek out as many side roads as possible.
What sort of absurd logic is that?
Rt 218 folks. Rt 218. That is the ONLY bypass you want to get to know.

Get used to the traffic. No one is going to use that toll road. No one. They'd be smarter to build a train right down the middle of 74 from Monroe to Charlotte with stops in Indian Trail, Matthews, and 1/2 way between Matthews and Charlotte. Bang, done. Thats smart use of money.

Once the toll road goes from 485 to Marshville you will see a lot of people use it. The speed limit will either be 65 or 70 and like 485, move along faster at times. That means you should be able to go the approximately 16 miles in about 12-14 minutes. Now, just to go the 5 miles from Sutherland Ave intersection to US 601 bridge takes 15 to 20 minutes most days.

Truckers are going to use it, people going to the beach will use it, people who have no need to stop anywhere in Monroe are going to use it. I'm going to use it when I have an appointment or business in Charlotte.

To go from my house near Austin Grove to where I work off of Sharon Amity takes an hour and 45 minutes on weekday mornings. When there is a wreck or something it has taken me as much as 2 1/2 hours to get to work. When the toll road is built I will be able to get on it at Forest Hills Rd and cruise with no stops to 485, get off at the second Matthews exit, drive 5 blocks, hang a left and be at work in 20-25 minutes. YOU BETTER BELIEVE I'M GOING TO PAY THAT TOLL.

If we had been smart we would have elected Fern Schubert. She had the proof that Gov Easley was a crook and we didn't need a toll to pay for the bypass. BUT NO...the damn Democrats made fun of her and the voters believed them. NOW WHAT? It's proven that Easley was a crook BUT WE STILL GOT THE DAMN TOLL. Once they find a way to get money they won't change their minds. We are stuck with the toll unless the state legislature were to pass a bill making it free.

Yes the toll road would help the mexicans get to charlotte from Monroe. That would be if they could figure out the right way to drive down it. How many times have they driven down 485 the wrong way. Like they would want to pay a toll anyway. They would want to save their stolen money for cerveza. Remember the alamo! THE MEXICANS ARE COMING! THE MEXICANS ARE COMING!

The US 4th circuit court of appeals has blocked the start of construction of the US 74 Toll Road Bypass. This artery would have connected I-485 to US 74 just East of Marshville, NC and bypassed the thick, dangerous congestion in Monroe, NC. The Environmental groups were able to prove that building the road would interfere with the habitat of the rare and highly sought after Bearded Clam. We must save the Bearded Clam. It is much nicer and holds it's flavor and aroma much longer than the juvenile appearing shaved clam.

We need people to speak up on behalf of the bypass. We need the bypass to happen soon. There are so many accidents happening on Hwy 74 because of congestion. People are getting angry waiting in traffic and confused when having to sit at lights and slow down every 5 miles. Changes from 25 to 35 to 45 to 55. Union County needs to speak up and be heard. Never seen any growing, very desirable county to take whatever comes their way. Seems like no one wants to speakup and be heard. This bypass will bring lots of jobs to the area. It will help union county residents to get to Mecklenburg to work faster. It will also prevent accidents.

I have learned quite a bit reading this thread. I finally have the answer to why environmental groups were able to stop this road. Someone posted it was, in fact, business owners on 74 who banded together and funded the environmental groups. It makes more sense to me than anything I have heard because being a native of Asheville I can tell you environmental groups oppose everything and 99% of the time they lose. When the judicial panel containing two Bush appointees blocked the bypass because of fraudulent environmental impact studies I almost passed out. Something definitely smelled funny. Now I have my answer. What a shame the doo-dad, thing-a-ma-jig peddlers have trapped the rest of us into going through 50 stoplights to get to Charlotte and making the trip twice as long as it should be. Plasticrap merchants selling chinese wares should not have so much power, it's quite repulsive. A 'gimme' of this kind to individual citizens would have hysterics screaming 'socialism'. When it's done in the interest of someone who owns the stamp 'co.', 'corp.', or 'LLC', that's just considered business. Now that the panel has refused to rehear the case (big shock there) it will be a few more years. This of course will inevitably happen, it is just going to take longer and make 74 increasingly more miserable as time goes on.

The "Bush" appointees were right to stop the bypass because of the FRAUD COMMITTED BY DEMOCRATS WHO WORK FOR AND CONTROL THE NC DOT. They lied and didn't do due diligence in submitting incomplete and fraudulent data based on out of date statistics.

I wish NC DOT get their stuff together and get back on track with this bypass. They have wilfully put alot of residents in a pretty bad place right now. Residents had hope to sell and move on to another home. This type of behavior should not be allowed by anyone to do damage or hurt people wilfully like this. I feel for the people who had their hopes sky high only to be shot down because someone did not do their job. I also feel Union County is not doing much to assist with this problem. Our pres is preaching about building our roads to get our people to work again. I would like him to come drive on Hwy 74 heading east and see if he could handle it or a day. Some residents have to drive this road, spending more money on gas because of the stop and go traffic, the changes in the speed limit every 5 miles. What is wrong with NC DOT? Maybe, they need to hire people who is willing to do a better job. There are lots of educated people looking for working now especially in Union County.
