Oh my gosh, I used to go there with my family when I was a kid from about '97-00. Me and my cousins were trying to find out if it was still there so we could take our kids and that's when I found this. I can't believe what happened to it. I used to love going there. I would look forward to it all year. I loved the pool and the club house at night. I used to love singing in the talent show. I remember the food was really good too especially the dessert. I remember Tish and Ed they were the in charge of all the activities. The last year I was there Tish had her nephew Derek (I think) working there and I had a little crush on him. They used to do this beauty pageant where the boys dressed up as girls and one of my cousin was in it, he was like 8. He would kill me for bringing that up. Wow...

I used to vacation in (drum roll please) Mountain Manor (also gone now in place of a golf resort only). My memories of Mountain Lake House in the early 70's are quite vivid and kind. We played each other in softball and I always found myself in centerfield chasing after some pretty good shots you boys hit towards me. Anyway, as I remember each year was different (for about 3-4 years) as one year you had our number and the next year we had yours. Sorry to read about the loss. My heart goes out to all of you.
Tom,

I worked at MM about that time, probably played against you in the Wed night softball game vs. the guests. IIRC the "help" almost never lost that game, but the guests got to take it out on the MLH guests the next day. Good times.

I am the current owner of about 34 acres of the old Mountain Lake House property. I've become interested in the history and I've been doing some research.

It looks like Jay Huffman actually purchased the property in 1906 (not 1918). In 1906 Lake Marshall (In front of Mountain Lake House) did not yet exist. The dam was built between 1906 and 1914 and the name "Mountain Lake House" originated in or before 1914.

The Huffman family was already running a hotel in the area known as the Marshalls Falls House since 1877. The house was located where the Weis grocery store is today. It seems likely that the descendant, Jay Huffman, would have started his hotel fairly quickly after purchasing the Mountain Lake House property. Considering the family's history in the hotel business, I expect this type of business venture was a primary reason for purchasing the property and creating the lake.

I used to lifeguard at Mountian Lake House, Tamiment and Unity House in the mid-late 80s. It was a little melancholic working in these places in their twilight but a lot of fun. My best youthful memories were the summer vacations in the poconos. It's quite sad when I visit my parents and see the old places falling apart and being sold off to property developers to be stripped forever.
Hi Kurt,

Do you remember a lifeguard named Dave? He worked there in 83,84,85. Thanks Deb

Thought it might be a good time to leave a note. I worked in the snack bar during the summer 1968 the year I graduated from HS, fifty years ago! Stayed in the garage building over the large refrigerators. The maid use to call the life guard "DR BREW" since she picked up the empty bottles in his room. I had been going there since the early 1950's. Norm and his wife were very kind and the staff up there was great! We all had such a good time working, talking and partying. There are many memories that keep coming back which puts a smile on my face.
