Full story: GoErie.com

How much do these appeals cost taxpayers? Copenhefer should have been executed. There are no mitigating factors in his case. He shot the woman in the backof the head after a ransom was denied. Kidnapping, murder, extortion. You tell me the mitigating factors here...there are none!! Cold blooded and a waste of time trying to save this idiot from death row. Someone is making some big $$$s.

Why does Pennsylvania even have a death penalty? I cant remember the last time anyone was put to death in this state. Can we just send our murderers to Texas where they will get what they deserve?

If he was smart enough to kill he smart enough to be executed. Do these prosecutors forget who the real victims are. I'll give you a hint
It's not the criminals..

You can't punish a corpse. Don't you people get it? Exacting vengeance for Copenhefer's lifetime is infinitely more rewarding than the few moments of glee you get when the lights dim.

Do you imagine Copenhefer, once dead, to be capable of thinking,"Geez, they showed me!" Grow some brains.

Yes but the taxpayers shouldn't have to pay to keep these murders alive. They actually live better than many people who don't do any crime .
The criminals are smart these days . They know the justice system will feel sorry for them and not their victims

If it is cruel and unusual punishment to execute a confessed murderer because he is retarded, wouldn't it also be cruel and unusual punishment to give him life in prison? The logic of the court escapes me.

I think Trieber should of been gone along time ago as well. That poor little girl of his didnt have a chance. I totally hope his ex-wife keeps going til they completely fry his a$$! As far as taking this one off death row due to retardation, I have a sister whom is retarded, she knows right from wrong and IM sure this one did as well. I dont live in Pa anymore, but sure feel for the tax payers paying to keep them all in prison for life...nice justice system!

I agree. What's the point in keeping him alive? He planned, and murdered his own child! Tie him up in a room and let his ex-wife kick the shit out of him, or fry the bastard and get it over with!!!!!

The law says you can't put mentally retarded people to death. That's the LAW. And if this guy meets the criteria of mental retardation, they simply can't, under the law, execute him. It's not that they want to or don't want to ... they're required to go by the law.

To know the date&hour of your death is not a punishment? Not vengeance, justice.

Pennsylvania basically allows endless appeals that drag on for years. So even if someone receives the death penalty, it is unlikely he will ever be executed unless he decides to give up his right to appeal. That is how a few prisoners were actually executed during the Tom Ridge administration. It wasn't because Ridge "got tough" on crime; it was because these individuals gave up appealing.

In terms of the living conditions of the prisoner, there is a big difference between serving on death row and serving a "life in prison" sentence.

A convicted prisoner on death row is in solitary confinement 23 hours a day. The prisoner is only allowed out of the cell one hour each day for exercise and personal hygiene. These prisoners aren't allowed to mingle with the regular prison population.

In contrast, a prisoner with a "life in prison" sentence is allowed out of his cell for several hours each day and allowed to mingle with the regular prison population, hold a job, attend classes. etc.

What all of this means is that the living standards of Jose Marrero just improved about 1000 percent! The same could be said for Alan Purcell and Joseph Szuchon. Both of thse men were on death row until one of their umpteen appeals overturned their death sentences and changed the sentences to life in prison.

This seems to happen quite a lot with murderers from Erie county.
