Grand Rapids; a good place to live?

As a majority-life Grand Rapidian (now at Western Michigan University) currently residing in Kalamazoo, I will say that if you're black, latino, or any other minority, this town will suck serious ass. Detroit is eons better than Grand Rapids in that regard. All the so-called "good suburban schools" is simply codeword for "no visible minorities whatsoever." As a black-male college student, I feel that my hometown was quite lacking in the amount of opportunities for minorities. Grand Rapids is only a good place to live if your Dutch & CRC (Christian Reformed Church) or if your last name is Meijer, VanAndel, or DeVos. I'm definitely moving to Detroit when I graduate from college. GR pisses me off too much. I'd have better chance of success in Detroit being a black entrepreneur than I ever would in Grand Rapids.
I think you could succeed in either area. Both offer unemployment, ADC, bridge card, and Obamacare benefits. If you really think Detroit has more to offer in career opportunities you must be in the NBA or NFL, or a drug dealer. Detroit blows!

I get a kick out of the Dutch CRC idiots that act as if the entire east side of state is horrible place to live. Have you ever been to east side other than to watch a ball game? Did you see all the money? From the neighborhoods in West Bloomfield, Troy, Royal Oak, Birmingham, and Novi? Those neighborhoods make Ada, Cascade, and East GR look poor. Did you see 5 lane highways filled with luxury automobiles and compare it to the 2 lane highway here filled with shit American cars (old Pontiacs and Chryslers) Did you see the 10 different luxury department stores compared to our 1 (Macys) Did you see the educated women who are in shape and wear make up and look nothing like the overly tall Dutch CRC manly looking farmer pig women? Did you see the variety of good restaurants compared to Gilmore Collection garbage in GR? The population on east side dwarfs the west side and the money on east side dwarfs the Dutch money in GR. GR is nothing more than a resort city with a nice lake side and that's it!

Not to dispute what you are saying, but your profile says you are in Wichita. You live in Wichita and bitch about Grand Rapids. Really? If GR is "nothing more than a resort city with a nice lake side" than what is Wichita? Tell us how Wichita is so much better than GR.

Way to assume, I'm in Michigan and never been to Kansas, Dorothy. But I would like to see your beaver. I'm using Verizon for internet connection. You'd have to ask Verizon why it says Kansas.

Again, not picking on you, but when you sign up to Topix you select where you are from. At the top of the page it has my handle and where I am from. I've moved with Topix so I was the one who set the location, not Verizon or AT&T or whomever.

And actually my family is from Kansas and I've been there many times. I like GR a lot better than any place in KS.

Oh, and did you know there are beavers in Florida? Not that my handle has anything to do with that but since you brought it up. It's more like Blue's handle.

I personally never had to register a thing or set a location on Topix. The only thing required is for me to enter a name, that's it. Not sure what you are talking about? My fave beavers are south American and Eastern European by the way.

If you click on your name/handle it should take you to a page where you can set your profile. That's where you can set your "home" as it were. So instead of being from Wichita you can be from around here.

If you are serious about moving here, do not live in the Grand Rapids city limits or send your kids to GR schools. Live in one of the surrounding suburbs. Grandville, Jenison, Hudsonville, Forest Hills and Rockford are nice and have good school systems. The latter two are a little pricey. I would avoid Kentwood, Wyoming and parts of Walker.
There are lots of activities. Minor league baseball, minor league hockey, and many concerts and other events at various venues around town.
Winters can be long, cold and grey. If you are not used to cold and snowy weather you will have quite an adjustment. Driving can be an adventure. Summertime is great. Beaches are a half hour away and there are lots of inland lakes with public boat launches and beaches nearby. Lots of golf courses as well, but the season only lasts about 5 or 6 months.
Thank you, this was very informative and exactly what I was looking for when I googled "living in Grand Rapids". I have a small young family and used to live in Phoenix. The bad part of big cities is terrible, and I really needed to know where to look for a safe rental.

Detroit has better strip clubs. I used to work there. Had to relocate because some guy named Bob kept harassing me.

I guess if you can put up with all the dummies it's ok. I just spent the entire morning driving around Hudsonville in blinding, wind driven snow where 80% of the cars didn't have headlights on. Near zero visibility and no lights, makes sense!

If you spent the morning driving around Hudsonville you must have been going in circles. Unless of course you happen to hit both of their traffic lights on "red".

Sounds like you have a lot of experience with that. You must work at the Rainbow club with your butt buddy Bob.

Right, a good place to VISIT. The LAKE SHORE is wonderful during season.

It could also be a good cultural experience seeing how one Church with one ethnicity has so much influence over a city.

Salt Lake City controlled by Mormon Church is great travel destination too, but I wouldn't want to LIVE there.

Funny, Grand Rapids and Salt Lake City are the two most charitable cities in the US.
