As a Catholic and student of history, I find this fascinating. I like what this Pope is doing.

Judged: 3 3 3 It has never been a secret that christmas was originally a pagan holiday celebrating the lengthening of the days after the solstice. The whole christian religion is fiction, a game of chinese whispers, much of it stolen from earlier religions. |

Judged: 2 2 2 It doesn't seem that long ago that the xtians were on here howling about some heretic preacher that was trying to change THE WORD, and predicting that he was on the fast track to the lower regions...... I guess the pope gets a free pass! |

Judged: 3 3 3 Good Day, Bob - I don't remember that discussion, maybe I missed it. As a Catholic and student of history - I think it is interesting that this Pope is doing this in terms of clarifying the narrative. Oh sure I know there are those out there, who for whatever reason, still believe the Earth is only a few thousand years old.(I am not on that wagon...) There are all kinds of historically interesting bits of history of "The Church". I think anyone of a belief who is "rational" understands that while many aspects of the scritures do in fact report actual historical events, many portions are really more anecdotal in terms of teaching a "lesson" if you will. Take Jonah and the whale for example. Noah - an interesting story perhaps that may not have happened as described, but in fact may actually be based on vocal tradional story telling. What do I mean by that? Ancient peoples vocally reported history though a verbal tradition over hundreds if not thousands of years. The "Great Flood" appears to have actually occured, but not of rain, but a geological event. The geological record seems to indicate that the Black see was once in fact a freshwater inland sea. Then, thousands of years ago the natural dam that held the Black Sea and Mediterranean separate failed and the Mediteranean, in a "great flood" inundated the Black Sea. This event perhaps could have been the genesis to the story of Noah. Not too many know that in the early church (Roman Catholic) preists were allowed to marry. In fact, St. Peter (the first Pope) was not only married, but had children! Oh yes... I wonder how the church might be different if preists could marry today (post ordination). Did you know that for decades (starting post WWII) the Church was at war with its very own Knights of the Church - the Jesuits. It got so bad that Pope John Paul II actually considered disbanding the Jesuits all together! I could go on... Steelie |

Judged: 2 2 2 Bob - depending on how one reads certain scriptural entries in the New Testament, it seems to indicate that Jesus may have been born during the Jewish month of Tashir.(Most likely during the feast of the Tabernacles - hence no rooms being available.) So it is actually quite likely he was born in perhaps mid-October. Steelie |

Judged: 2 2 2 There is not a single firsthand account of jesus, it's far more likely he was never born or existed at all. |

Judged: 2 2 2 Says the disgruntled Jew who doesn't believe in the New Testament at all. |

Judged: 1 1 1 Or that he wasn't really born at all, in any month! As a former member of the church, I found that the bible is not much more than a bunch of stories written by people who didn't witness anything that they wrote about, and, it is subject to the same changes this pope is trying to make, while being held up as the one and only ultimate guide to some glorious afterlife. So the next question should be..... When is The Bible #3 coming out, and who gets to write it? |

Judged: 3 3 3 Really Bob? But you wished that the Pope be sent to a place you don't believe in?? Interesting how you want to send people to a place you don't believe in. Be careful what you wish for Bob, YOU may get what you wish for others. You and Stevie both. |

Judged: 1 1 1 It must take quite a bit of effort to be as ignorant as you are..... Nowhere in any of my posts did I say that I thought this pope was going anywhere. Rather, I said that WM bible thumpers climbed all over the preacher who tried to stray from the narrow minded teachings of this supposedly holy book. A holy book which is and has been subject to constant revision from others. |

|
Judged: 2 2 2 No effort for you apparently. See post #6 from you. Apparently you suffer from CRS these days? |

Judged: 1 1 1 Or, since it was the season that shepherds spent the nights in the fields with their flocks (lambing season), it could be in February or early March. Interesting to think that the one referred to as 'the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world' would be born during lambing season, don't you think? |
