I am in the process of completing a book related to the music industry (rock concerts in particular) and was very interested in speaking with anyone who might remember the old Thunder Chicken club from the 1970s. Even better would be if anyone could point me in the direction of people who worked there at some point.

I'm specifically trying to pinpoint some information on a show KISS played there on October 17, 1974, but would be happy to talk to anyone who recalls the club or any details about it even on a more general basis.

Anyone who can help me out, or knows of someone who can, please email me at: radagast5@aol.com

Thanks!

Yes, that's the one, Rock on. It was at 5707 N. Alpine, which is now Hansen's Collision.

Are you still in touch with your friend who used to work there? If so, I'd enjoy the opportunity to speak with him/her via email or phone. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

You can read it right now: it's called KISS Alive Forever, and was originally released in October 2002. You should be able to find it on Amazon, or at your local bookseller. We're working on the second, updated edition, and the Thunder Chicken show is a gig on which we're trying to get more information.

I played there a few times, probably 1974-5. Kim Rush blueslovinkim719@hotmail.com I live in GR, so I may know someone who is aware of Kiss playing there, but don't recall it happening, myself. The owner, Dick Bichler had a number of concerts there including Rory Gallagher, Lettermen, James Gang and T Rex in the same time frame as I was playing there. I recall seeing John Mayall there, too, but I believe that was in the late 70's.

Contact someone from the Alpine Township Historical Commission and you probably will find lots of information related to the club. I remember seeing the sign that used to be on it. Call Alpine Twp.

I saw Kiss at the Thunder Chicken as well and also Rory Gallerer. I believe it held maybe 2-5 thousand people. I was the manager of Mailing Shoes at the time in Roger's Plaza and 18 years old. Good times.

I was at the KISS show at The Thunderchicken. It was very early in their carreer. All I remember for sure was that Gene Simmons took a pool ball off the table in the back while a guy was shooting.
This is when they were entering the stage from the back of the night club to the front stage.
Also saw T Rex, REO, New York Dolls, and others that I do not remember.
No way they seated 2-5 thousand.
Maybe 750

I saw Kansas there twice in the early 70's, before they became really big. It was between the release of their first and second albums. Great shows! Also, Skip Van Winkle and the Night Rockers played there. Skip was originally from Teegarden and Van Winkle ("God, Love & Rock N' Roll"). That's all I can remember.

I went to a few shows at the Thunder Chicken circa 1974-1975. I was a Californian visiting some friends who went to Grand Valley. I'd say the place held about a thousand people with multiple bars and pool tables. It was a place for has-beens and up and comers to play. Also local talent.

Saw REO around the time Lost in a Dream came out. Opening band was named Tello (probably a local band), they were a three-piece power trio type of thing. My friends and I dropped acid for the show. It was a weird night because a car crashed into a pole out on Alpine and knocked the power out for a good length of time. In the darkness, people got rowdy and began hurling bottles and glasses in the direction of the stage. We were trippin' in the darkness hiding under our cocktail table to dodge the glass.

REO was pretty good. It was the Mike Murphy (who was clutching a bottle most of the night) lineup and they hadn't gone completely weenie yet. Lotsa stuff from 2nd, 3rd & 4th LP's.

Being from California, I hadn't heard much REO. They were only really popular in the Midwest at the time. Saw quite a few shows there during my three month stay. Also hung out at the White Rabbit, East Town Saloon and the Intersection over in SE GR on Wealthy. Good times.

Cheers all

Here is a great link to a wonderful website that can give you information about the Thunderchicken. http://www.westmichmusichystericalsociety.com...
I went to a show there and saw Bob Seger. I had been visiting friends in Grand Rapids. We went to that great show there before he became wellknown. It was somewhere between 1973 and 1974.

My older brother was a bouncer at the Thunder Chicken, he worked the Kiss concert there, also. I worked there when it was Top of the Rock in 85-86.
