Should Spanking Your Child Be Illegal?

Full story: WZZM Grand Rapids

Massachusetts lawmakers say a proposed measure that would ban parents from spanking their children, even in their own homes, is a way to protect kids from abuse.

No, spanking should not be made illegal. The way I raise my kids is my business, not the governments. Plus, my assumption is that they are trying to minimize child abuse. Making spanking illegal is not going to do it, but maybe more education will.

The idea to make spanking your child illegal is simply ridiculous. Its none of the governments business how people choose to "DISCIPLINE" their children. Its just that, discipline not punish.
Its bad enough they take prayer out of the public.(separation of church/state) what happened to our religious freedoms? The Bible says in Proverbs 13:24
"He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him".
In my opinion with all the crime & garbage on the rise in this world there hasnt been enough spankings and discipline.

Leave it to the liberal morons in Mass. to come up with an idea like this one. No, we should not beat the daylights out of our kids, but a timely swat on the backside is a good tool. The government should stick to running the country [they aren't to good at that either], and keep their noses out of the jobs of the parents. I'll bet the legal community is just chomping at the bit to help????? all the little kiddies bring lawsuits against their parents and put some extra change in their pockets as well.

Defining spanking is going to be an insurmountable task.

While I applaud the effort in Mass., I think the energy should be placed in education of parents.

Even down in the dirt drug addicts know enough to use clean needles.

This is because we have done an awesome job of AIDS and Hepatitis education.

The millions spent on this issue may complete some of that, by the fact that folks will be talking?

Maybe this is the way to get it started.

I stand to be counted on not spanking.

what does education have to do with it ? people need to teach thier children wright from wrong and some times a spanking is needed.there is a big diferance between spanking and beeting.if my child does something that is dangerious
and telling them is not make a diferance,i will spank their a** if that is what it takes to get threw to them.

Ban parents from spanking children??? Seems like a stupid law to me. If parents aren't allowed to discipline thier children, who's going to do it. It is the parent's job to teach their kids wrong from right. Boy, imagine if teachers were still allowed to smack kids with a ruler, or swat them with a stick. I don't think the people who write these laws have kids. Either that, or they send them off to a boarding school so they don't have to deal with them.

There is a line between spanking and child abuse. My parents never crossed it, and neither did I. I gurantee you if my grandkids act up they will get a swat on the behind.
Maybe if the 12 year old who took the gun to school got a spanking, he never would have taken it in the first place.
I agree with Dispatch Jim, when he states the people who write these laws don't have kids of their own.

Spanking my children should be none of your (or anyone else's) business!

Yes it should. Fine all the parents that swat their brats. Take the money and build HUGE juvenile facilities and more prisons. After all-that stupid law should pay off somewhere and boy are we going to need them.

No it shouldn't. We parents don't need any more insane laws to plague our lives with!

I am against spanking. But I am even more against these daft invasive laws!

When is the anti tea drinking law coming out? That will be next on the agenda by the thought police!

Cindy, I think you are missing the point of education. It is education for the PARENTS on where the line is drawn between spanking and beating; between inappropriate and unacceptable behavioral choices. In fact, it sounds like you could use a little of it yourself, since you seem to think that (I'll fill in the blanks you so carefully placed in your sentence)you can "beat their ass" as an appropriate form of punishment.

I agree that the government needs to stay out of this. Even the nurse who drafted this law says she "swatted" her own children when rearing them. However, liberals do not want Americans to be educated to think for themselves. They want the government to control every action we take so that we are dependent upon them for everything we do in life.(It's called job security for them!)

I think a good spanking may have helped some folks learn to spell when they were children. By the words on this forum, there has not been enough spanking going on. Ok, ok, just kidding, spanking will not help a child learn to spell. Oh my - at least if you cannot spell, keep your fingers still. Spanking should not be illegal. Child abuse is different and we seem to be managing fairly well in telling the difference between beating a child and a swift spank on the bottom very, very rarely.

amen... parents and educators deserve the right to see that every child is disciplined in a respectful manner. if parents teach their kids right from wrong at an early age, the educators jobs will be easier. i am in 100% agreement with warming a bottom when needed. for those of you who cant seem to discipline your kids, well thank god there will always be prisons to control them later in life!!!

I dont think now law should be made,But I do believe spare the Rod ,spoil the child ! My kids got a swat on the behind and they turned out just fine, I dont mean a beating a swat after there third warning,Then if that didnt work,it did when dad came home. All it took was his voice .

Of course not, this would be the biggest mistake ever! the children today are already out of control as it is they dont care about being yelled at or being sent to their rooms they will laugh in your face We the parents need to have some control when kids get of line sometimes you have to spank them to let them know that they are children and they need to stay in a childs place
i see a lack of respect in the children today its really a shame they are so different than we were.

Hi there I really do not think there is anything wrong with parent spanking there Children but there is a limit at how hard you have to do this to prove a point to your child. We raised our Family my wife very seldom would spank them but when Dad came home from work he would, but we did that with the kids after they turned a year old from then on they knew if they did wrong what was going to happen, But remeber what I told you when they are only one you do not spank them so hard they really feel pain right through the diaper, it is the idea of discipline more than any thing. Remeber when you do that to your own kids Remeber again you LOVE them, if you do not LOVE them then do not discipline them you need Discipine your self.

I totally agree with you, There is a huge difference between abuse & a swat on the behind to get their attention. It's bad enough that some schools are telling our Kids if your parents spank you, You need to tell us. when I was a kid & I got a swat on the behind, I knew it was because I had crossed the line & it was usually after the 3rd/4rth time I had been warned. The state & goverment are going too far. whats next we all will have big brother in our homes?

I think that children should only be spanked between the 1st and 5th of each month and only when the moon is in full. They should only be spanked with a bare open hand bearing down at approximately 7.5 foot-pounds of torque. The child must be wearing a pair of 100% cotton underwear, color must be blue. If diapers are worn, brand name must be either Pampers or Luvs.(Huggies cause enough rashes as it is without a spanking.) The child should only be spanked after he/she has been spoken to 11 or more times to do something or to cease doing something.

;-)
So, is this what we are headed for?

I think that, just as with pretty much anything, something in excess is bad. I am all for spanking- I am also all for time-outs, withholding of rewards, postive reinforcement, etc.

But too much of any of those things can have anegative effect.

Balancing out the appropriate punishment or reward is what is key...

Has it ever occurred to you that some of the bad spellers might be dyslexic?
