Anyone have, or have family members, the norovirus? It's commonly called the stomach flu. We think one of our kids brought it home from school as an early Christmas present and wondered if anyone else had gotten it.

Yep, just talked to a friend today "on the phone" said his whole family has been down with it since before Christmas. Hear it's immune to the regular Flu shots.

The flu shot only works for the flu virus not a stomach bug.

But it is not covered with the annual flu shot.

Check out this website. www.cdc.gov/features/noroviris .
The annual flu shot provides immunization for respiratory virus only not a stomach virus.

My child was at the Primary School also. I guess that's where it started. Thanks for the replies. Was just trying to figure out where it came from.

It takes 4 things for bacteria to grow. Time, temperature, ph and moisture. That is why you put food in the fridge and why you fertilize and lime your yard.
At the early warning of stomach bug being in your area if you will start drinking either grape juice or lime juice 3 times a day, you will change the ph in your stomach so that the bacteria can not grow.
This will keep you from ever getting sick.

Influenza is a virus of the respiratory system. Sometimes it does causes side effects of nausea and vomiting but what this person is referring to Is gastroenteritis. Gastro refers to the stomach and itis refers to infection so it is an infection of the stomach. There is no medical term stomach flu.

Influenza is totally different than the stomach bug. The stomach bug is a virus, non related to the actual flu. People just call it the stomach flu. Sometimes the actual flu can have affects that mimmick a stomach virus. Most of the gastro-intestinal bugs we get last a day or two max, they are a stomach bug. The actual flu carries a fever and usually lasts for 5-7 days. So it is only common sense that the flu shot will NOT work for a stomach bug. I have found that a steady intake of probiotics and fiber can greatly reduce your chances for catching the stomach bug, and if you do get it, it will not be as bad.

You're right. People call it the stomach flu. So a lot of people think the flu shot should prevent it. Now that that's cleared up, maybe the idiots trying to explain it will STFU.

Well, that explains your wisdom.....but most ordinary mortals still call it the stomach flu. So why don't you take all that knowledge you have stored up and do something other than argue with what you call a stupid person on Topix forum? Maybe you can find a cure for hemorrhoids since you're such an ass.

Chill out, Harley. You can't stand to be corrected and then you lash out at someone because you're wrong?! At least you learned something today. I think the correct response would be, "Thank you."
