Ok this is my second post on this. Apparently someone doesn't want us to spread the truth.

Smyth County Residents Be Aware!!
Each man, woman, and child in the county will OWE County Government
$3300
if they finance all the proposed expenditures of $100,000,000 ($100 million)
Property tax rates will increase by at least $.07 per $100 or 10%.
County debt creates a real cost for property owners:$70 to $350 or more per year, depending upon the property assessed value. This is according to the consultants that the County hired to study the County financial status and impact to the residents. We have copies of the report. The yearly debt payments of up to nearly $4,000,000 will continue beyond the year 2043, even if the county doesn’t take more debt in later years.
What makes up the debt?
Over the last year, the County Board of Supervisors has voted “YES” to spending money we do not have, and need a HUGE loan. Plus, they are considering spending MORE!

· Courthouse expansion =$25,000,000 (MUST borrow) Approved in 2010
· New Marion School Campus =$25,000,000 Under consideration NOW
· New water processing facility*=$50,000,000 Proposed
*In northern part of the county to supply Tazewell residents with Smyth County water.

The Board of Supervisors also voted approval to:
· Increased property tax rates by 10%
· Increased machinery taxes
· Increased permit fees, including adding fees to church groups
· AND (to add insult to injury,) increase their own salaries!**
** After Roscoe Call stated that they were “doing the citizens a favor” by coming to county meetings. Since when? Didn’t they volunteer?
Soon they will vote on whether or not to take the new debt and the additional tax increases for the new debt (the $.07 per $100.) If the county takes on this new debt, it will not be paid off until years after our grammar school age children are holding their grandchildren! Let’s hope they don’t need even MORE loans during the next 40 years.
When did YOU get a pay raise? Have your utility bills gone down? Property taxes gone down? Gas prices gone down? Groceries or household supplies gone down?

YOU can make a difference!!! Just a phone call!!
It’s hard to influence Washington DC, but local representatives need your input.
PLEASE TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE “NO MORE TAXES or DEBT!!”
There is a proposed Public Hearing August 9th at 6:00 PM for input on the new school funding. Check the paper for the final date and time. It MUST be advertised by law.

By the way, there are 4 Board of Supervisors positions up for election this fall. Interested in running? Let us know. If they won’t listen, use your sovereign strength and VOTE! Better yet, run against them. Let’s CHANGE the tax and spend direction!

Please call your representative to express your opinion about incurring more debt or increasing costs to residents in any way. Their phone number is public for a reason; they need your input in order to make financially good decisions about how to spend YOUR money.

They don't need an updated courthouse, they need schools.
I'd vote for firing half the mess we got in office now all over the nation...
Wasters don't care about other people's money,a reduction in force would control the most of the problems.

We should nickname you "Stone Age". With that line of thinking that is where we would still be.

The court house update is not choice for the county. It is mandated by the courts. The county put it off and as a result, the courts in Richmond set down orders to do the updates.

I think its odd that certain member of the Board of Supervisors change politics to go with the flow. Evidently they don't know what they believe in or how to represent people in the area. Smyth schools do need to be updated, that should have happen years ago, but the old Town of Marion money stays just where its always been and everyone else funds projects. Smyth county is so far outdated its really sad when you have friends in neighboring towns that seem to grow every year and Marion keep loosing grown. I really hate to see the politics in the next 20 years, but at my age I probably don't have that worry, and my children were smart enough to leave here.

The projects listed are SMYTH County, not Town of Marion. Just clarifying a point.

Unless you own property in Smyth County. Then they'll get your money next year, hard freeze or not.

If our childrens grandchildren will still be paying off our generations debt, then at least they'll know that they're grandchildren will be going to school in a safe, air conditioned building that they don't have to worry about caving in on them. In my opinion, there is no limit to the amount of money I'd pay to make sure the place where my kid spent eight hours a day was safe. The well-being of future leaders should be a HUGE priority! The fact that people are against this idea is mind boggling. I understand not wanting the new courthouse right now, but the new school and renovations to some existing ones will create several new jobs in the area. And the same people who are opposed to this idea are the very same ones who sit around on this site and bitch about there being no jobs in the area. Imagine the jobs created just to build and renovate, just to do the construction.

Please- I encourage everyone to attend the board meeting Tuesday night at 6:30. Don't just sit-be heard! We should strive for better for our future generations!

hey u otta know-you just posted this on topix but then you also sent it out via email with your name on it!! Last laugh on you. Quit your little email campaign that is full of LIES and CRAP. How in the world can you say that our children do not need a new school? It is NOT our kids' fault that our mostly uneducated Board of supervisors has screwed this courthouse thing up for the last decade. Shame on you for trying to use lies and scare tactics to keep our children from having new and newer facilities. Shame on you.

if this new school does get built then each and every parent needs to have a heart to heart with their kids about how to respect and treat such a nice and expensive building. if your kids dont write on the walls at home, dont smear poop and other body fluids on the wall at home, and dont throw toiletpaper wads on the ceilings then what are you NOT doing to make them think its okay to do it at school. ive gone to several events for a few little kids in my family as well as a night school graduation for a coworkers kid. both the intermediate and the high school had a lot of issues caused by the bratty kids who have no discipline. i know this has nothing to do with whats being said but it makes me sick to think that money will be put towards a new school and within the first week some evil brats will be destroying it. i dare you to go interview a janitor at the schools around here, they could probably tell you horror stories. then go home and remind your little tot that your taxes not only paid for the school but have to pay for the extra paint, sheetrock, etc that has to be redone from it being destroyed.

The higher the property tax rate the more costly it will be to live and operate businesses in smyth county. No business will locate here when they can move to an area with lower taxex and a larger work force. for all of you who think it want effect you because you dont own property. think again. Your rent will go up and your job choices will be few.
