That depends... What type of music do you like?

There are several bands around here. Within Reason, Insanatarium, Malasylum, Gypsum, Octane Overload...

Ranges from pop rock to metal and the stuff in between.

There are some good bands around, the only problem with the music scene around here is that there are too few places to go enjoy it. The Driftwood in Chilhowie books bands mostly for Saturday nights they try to have a variety of music, The Smyth County Moose Lodge mainly has country or southern rock bands playing there. Also whenever the 5'Oclock opens back up in Glade they used to have bands all weekend I would assume whenever their construction is completed that is what they will continue to do especially since they decided to expand the size of the building.

Ok...yea I was looking for your basic rock. Maybe even a little psychedelic influence. Sounds like Marion needs a good venue!

If you're looking for rock, Shaun Michael Brown - a young local man who is currently recording in Nashville - will be here August 10th at the Farmer's Market Pavilion in Downtown Marion (behind Macado's) from 8-10:30. He does mostly southern rock and country, but he's great! Smyth County Young Professionals group will be serving food and beverages as well! The concerts have really been a hit in Marion!

Don't forget about bands like Dysfunction and Soul Collision! Our area has some very talented musicians. As for places to see them....

***RANT ALERT***

Marion hasn't had a decent place for local musicians to play since the Best Western bar closed. I seriously doubt it ever will again either.. there are too many influential people in our area who try to push out what they consider a "bad element." Bars, live music venues, etc. When the 5 O Clock opens back up in Glade Springs, that should be a good thing. Until then, the Driftwood Cafe in Chilhowie and Louie's Pizzeria in Glade are both options for live music. The problem is, the community isn't really supporting these businesses and are DEFINITELY not supporting the local musicians by coming to see them. Being a local musician, and knowing and talking to several other local musicians, you will find that when a band plays locally, the turn out is mediocre at best, but the same band can go to other venues outside of Smyth Co and have great crowds. The Appalachian Music Alliance (AMA) is a group of local musicians with a common goal of trying to grow and better our local music scene, but its like we are beating our heads against a wall, because our biggest supporters come from outside our home community. Our area doesn't seem to give a damn about supporting the local music scene... in fact some in our area actively try to fight it. What does it say that our local bars get more than double the business on a karaoke night than they do on a live music night? If we can get people involved and to start supporting the local music scene, then things will get better. I just don't see it happening anytime soon.

Barkers is having live bands. But its more of people not coming out to support live music than it is anything else. I wish Barkers the best.
