Everyone please make shure you have working smoke detectors in your home and test them regulary!!! I am a volunteer Firefighter from a neigboring Dept that was called in to assist. Suposdly there were no working smoke detectors. This couple is lucky to have woken to the smell of smoke and the crackling of the flames.

And if you rent it's your landlords responsibly by law to make sure you have both a working smoke detector and CO detector.

thamks WCH for mentioning that. I did not even think of that.

If the landlord refuses to supply them you can ethier report him or I think you can bu them yourself and deduct the cost from your rent. Last I knew a tenant can leagly deduct from the rent and pay for any repairs that that landlord refuses or dose not fix in a reansonable time frame. Those repairs are for stuff that if not fixed ect pose a safty hazzard.

What is the matter with you people? You expect the landlord to be responsible for something to save your life or one of your families. Buy a smoke detector yourself. Treat it like your TV or some other prized possesion and take it with you when you leave. Smoke detectors are VERY inexpensive. Try not to blame the other guy!

Not trying to blame anyone just noting the law. Also most local fire districts will install them for you and educate the homeowner.

First of all people get your facts straight. Ok the couple was a mom and son and they owned the house. So it is not relivent about a landlord. And as to wether or not the smoke detectors worked don't speculate unless you know for certain. I am not going to say they were working or not but I sure am not going to say one way or the other with out knowing 100%.

sorry I am not saying they wernt working for shure just saying what I heard mentioned. Even if there were working dectors I still would have said make shure that you have a wrking smoke alarms in your home. All to latly there have been a lot of close calls all around and some deaths from some fires whee there were confirmed no working detectors. And with the landlord thing I were were not tring to make it like they did not own the house. We were just pointing out a fact for those out there who do rent that may not know about the law.

And "Disgusted" shure maybe someone who rents should sometimes just go buy there own detectors. But the pooint is if they rent should not have to. You also have to think if there are more than one apt in that building who is to say that if one unit hasno working alrams the others apts may not have working alarm Also. who is to say that even if they are inexpensive that someone who rents can spare the extra money. Not trying put people down but there are some people out there that are trying thier hardest to work and make money. But expecialy with our econnomy some are just barly making enough to pay the rent, eletric and gas and feed themselves and family. Also if there are gas appliances in the place taht they rent a CO detector is needed and they can be 4 times or more the price of one smoke detector. Also you have to take in account that it buildings with multipal units that have a main hall way. A one or more smoke detecors should also be in that hall way as its a means of escape and so that the hall will usualy fill with smoke from another unit on fire fist before it reaches other apts. go here for anyone that wants to know the proper placement of smoke detector http://www.nfpa.org/categoryList.asp...
