I got a text from my sister that attends McDowell High stating they were having to sit in cosmetology class with hair dryers tryin to get warm because it was colder inside the school than it was outside. She ask someone why it was so cold in the high school & they stated they would not turn the heat on until November 1st 2009. It was 29 degrees yesterday, but they didnt cut the heat on? & I have called both the high school & the school board. I was told to speak with Mike Murray @ school board but he conveniently is out of the office today. High school says they have no control over it! This is CRAP! We all know what it feels like when our hands gets cold, what about these kids that doesnt have a coat, or maybe an extra long sleeved shirt that they can put on? Parents do something about this!! This is ridiculous!

This has always been an issue. If they turn the heat on now and it gets hot in two days, the school will not be able to cool the classrooms. They have to make decisions like this for everyone. I know it doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but that is the way it works!

This is going on all over. A lady whos son just got over H1N1 was on WLOS last night talking about it. The school told her it was because switching from ac to heat wasnt that easy. I can understand that but come on we can let the kids out early for heat why not let them go in a little late till it warms up some in the rooms. The kids cant learn if they are froze.

First off if that was your sister she had no business texting from school. All cell phone signals should be blocked from schools, children go to school to learn not text or at least they should be going to learn.

How many kids do you really think will abide by the no cell phone policy?

Back in my day, we had ta bring kindling to school or we wouldn't get in the door. Principle Mrs. Whitson would stand at the door and lay a good hard whoopin on anybody that tried to get inside without firewood. Sometimes we even burned our desks. Those lucky enough to have shoes would chew the leather for that cowhide goodness taste fer lunch.
Vegetables! Are you kiddin me?! We grazed in the schoolyard and fought over knotty apples in the one ricketty tree that growed down by the crick. Why spring onions was a treet! We didn't even know what sugar was until them city boys came around and offered it to the ones of us they thought was "purty".
They thought I was purty. I gots plenty of sugar I tell you. It costed me more and more though.
So Pretty soon, I had ta go away.
But everwhere I went, I never forgot to bring Kindling!
It'll open alot a doors. That or beat the crap outta anybody hiding behind that door that won't give ya no sugar.
Lesson fer today...Make sure ya carry a big stick of kindlin. You'll get a heapin better deal when ya bargain fer sugar.

Put a block on cell signals within 500' of school offices. Do as I do leave it in the car and only check it when I'm on breaks or lunch.

I dont think I ask any sort of a question about texting or cell phones or the price of eggs in China, dim whit. I was concerned because of the children who are cold while trying to learn! I was concerned because of the children who have physical disabilities who are in pain when they are cold, I was also concernced about the day care center @ the high school. I am also concerened about the children that may or may not have an extra long sleeve shirt to wear under their clothes or an extra jacket. But instead you look to much into and you are more concerned about a cell phone!Im sorry your worried about a cell phone!

Well bless their little hearts. When I was in school we did not have AC in the summer nor were we allowed to wear shorts. In the winter all we had were the old steam radiator style heaters that took forever to get hot. Between classes we would sit on them to get warm - if you could find one that was hot.- Everyone carried their coats from class to class.- And this was the generation that sent men to the moon and back without the aid of fancy computers.- The lack of heat or AC didn't seem to have hurt our ability to learn.

No, but a little forewarning would help you be closer and maybe be able to help ease a stressful situation.

Yes Marion citizen I believe I would be able to get to school if something happened but what I said was if the kids can text you can call and make sure they are ok withought having to bother trying to go through the cops. Besides who are we kidding, the cellphone isnt hurting the kids education. If it wasnt a call phone they would be writing notes, drawing in their textbook or daydreaming.

and whom at old fort to you think should be responsible for paying medical bills? it seems to me that this issue was brought up 10 years ago...would this not be in the hands of the central office? don't think decisions like that are made at the school level pal...
