I would have to agree Motor Monday was a lot of fun this week. A little smaller turnout this week but I hope to see more motorcycles next Monday. Interestingly enough, Cliff McLarty brought his red Corvette this time. He said this was in response to a post in this forum where it was suggested Corvettes or any other cool vehicle should feel welcome. I thought that was a great idea. I hope we'll start seeing not only bikes, but Vettes, MG's, VW's, Ferrari's, Monster Trucks, or tricked-out custom cars and trucks at future Motor Mondays. The more the merrier.

Why not invite the local Mopar club, the Route 70 Cruisers and everyone who just loves cars, bikes or just conversation about bikes and cars? It would be really neat for Mondays in Marion to become like Fridays in Valdese. Gets people to town, Mondays don't usually compete with other cruise ins and everyone would have a good reason to look forward to Monday.

I will have to correct Gary on me bringing the Corvette. It is my wife's and I had to beg her to take it downtown. Otherwise, I would have been on my motorcycle.

Gary is correct in saying we had a lot of fun. I have got to meet citizens I would not have if not for Motor Monday. Great conversations...about a lot of issues.

I would think anyone who likes to talk about anything and drives would be welcomed at this function, just to expand their circle of friends.

I am, personally, having a blast meeting other riders and talking about trips we have made and learning about other routes to take.

Come join us.

First -there's nothing wrong with middle aged men bonding over their macho boy toys, common interests and just having fun.

Second - many women like motorcycles and definitely like sexy cars.

But is worries me that Motor Monday serves as a networking tool for mostly middle aged white males – the viagra crowd. While it’s a genius way to gather men who have enough wealth for leisure and who are at a time of their lives when they are interested in civic duty, Motor Monday is inevitably just forming a NEW old boys club in Marion. The candidates are unwittingly selecting an event of most interest to men (I know WOMEN ARE WELCOME and WOMEN ARE THERE – but count them next week and give me a ratio.)

I guess we will need to have a sewing Saturday for you the women. Get real. This is just to get "people" (whether male or female) downtown. Last week I counted 14 people and of that were 5 women. That looks like a 35% attendance rate of women. Are you saying that EVERYTHING must be 50/50? If so, you have no clue as to LIFE.

I can't ride those things, but I saw people from age 18 to age 60, so your "New old boys club" don't fly.

What is the point that you are trying to make? The people that attend Motor Monday each week are not selected but come at their own free will. This is not a club and there are no rules so if you have a better idea lets hear it.There are many men and WOMEN that take a great interest in old cars and motor cycles.Maybe you should take a trip to Valdese on Friday night and you will see a very diverse crowd of people, young and old ,women and men, some use viagra ,some do not.If your only three years old and only have a tricycle ,bring it,It has been said before if it has wheels that is what this event is for.If you are just looking for WOMEN,they are having the southern womens show in Charlotte this weekend. If you are just wanting to complain, take it somewhere else.

I'm all for Motor Monday and was there the first night. Been out of town for the last 2, but would have liked being there.- In reading these posts and others here on topix, I am somewhat disappointed to see that this is becoming a political thing.- Who started it, who's idea it was, etc., what does it matter?-(BTW I know the person who suggested the bike rally and it wasn't Gary Walker - although he likes to take credit for it.) What does it matter that we would like to have a hotdog stand - and then it goes to city council for an increase in the permit price? Why does motor monday have to meet at the coffee shop? Who's back is he scratching? I'm already fed up with the fact that a group of people can't get together and hang out without it involving politics.

Taz,
The thing that motivates me about Motor Monday is that it has the potential to bring people into downtown for fun, and that's something Marion so desparately needs. There's no political back-scratching, though some of the posters on Topix would apparently like to have you believe otherwise. There's no political agenda, just people and rides. Other than giving people free "Gary Walker" drink koozies, I try to avoid talking about politics altogether while I'm there. Why do I "take credit" for Motor Monday? I thought of it after hearing Cliff McLarty speak of his idea of an annual motorcycle rally that could originate in Marion, which I still think is a great idea. I thought that a WEEKLY gathering of motorcycles in Marion would be a great way of building excitement for something like what Cliff was thinking about. The biggest benefit to downtown would be that more people would be coming into town for fun on a weekly basis. The reason the Crooked Door was the location was simply because they were open at that time of day, and I found out that Mike, the owner, was a motorcycle enthusiast. Anyway, after talking to Cliff, Mike, and several other motorcycle enthusiasts, I noticed there was a new thread on Topix that suggested a motorcycle rally, and I posted that there was a group of people already planning to meet on Main St. at the Crooked Door, and that's where it all started. I posted that with the user name "Bill Changer" because I didn't want to make people start thinking of this as a political event. "Motor Monday" was a name I posted as a suggestion in the motorcycle rally thread, and the name stuck. If you don't agree with me politically, then that's fine - we can agree to dissagree on that stuff, but don't let it keep you from coming to Motor Monday. I have truly enjoyed meeting and talking with everybody there and I hope you'll come join us again.

I think the Motor Monday event is a wonderful idea! Even though my hubby and I no longer ride, I would love to gather with these folks and see all the bikes. When I first read about this event being planned I was excited. To those that have never ridden a motorcycle, the thrill is beyond compare! Feeling the wind in your face and yes, swatting a few bugs and gnats out of the eyes, feeling the cooler temps and as you lean and hug the curves on a mountainous highway, nothing compares.
When my hubby and I were married that Saturday in Gaffney many years ago, we came home, got our motorcycle and hit the road! We both had bikes of our own but we took the 'biggie'! He drove for awhile and then I took the helm and I drove him, all over Lake James and back around Andrews Geyser, our favorite place. As the weather was turning bleak with a little drizzle, hubby took the controls with me on back. We ran over a patch of loose fine gravel in a curve and 'layed it down'. We were ok, albeit a few scrapes and road burns but made it home. There are moments now that I can still feel the hide coming off my leg and hip and hubby still bears the scar on his chin in which he lost his full-face shield helmut, but oh my, I can also still feel the wind on my face, the thrill of the ride! Did we ride again? Yes, most certainly! Went home, got a shower, a change of clothes and hit the road again! Our wedding day, our gift to each other, a day like no other, wonderful memories, seared hide and all!
I love it

GREAT story Biker Chick. Glad you both were ok enough to ride again. Come on down to Motor Monday in your "cager" (car)and tell us some more stories. You and hubby would be welcomed. I don't think it really much matters if you drive or just walk up, these people just want to have a conversation and fun. They all have been very nice to talk with.

My goodness, you don't have to bring your viagra nor talk about it either and you can wear your toupee to town if you like! I might let you ride on back of my pretty pink bike too, if you're not scared to ride with this biker chick! What say you? Got to replace the battery first though. And while you may think Motor Monday is an ingenious way for 'men' or ladies to gather who have enough wealth for leisure and/or civic mindedness, I do proclaim Sir, or Madam, I have not, at the moment, two nickels to rub together! But tomorrow, well that's a different story. Right now, I'm going to pour a cup of coffee and continue to read these 'interesting' opinions of our worthy citizens.

Hubby and I are part of a 'Coffee Cruisers' in SC, meeting up on Saturday mornings to ride out on the motorcycles, enjoy a cup of coffee and upon frequenting the Marion area we were wondering if anything such as this exists in Marion? We love our motorcycle, coffee and most of all, meeting other people. We know that the Christian Motorcycle Association meets monthly but we are never able to make meetings during the week, hence were hoping for something on Friday evenings or perhaps Saturdays? Thanks heaps.
