I moved here seven years ago and have ever since been amazed by the amount of gossip in McDowell County and the city of Marion

What's even more amazing is that most of the gossiping is being done in a county where nearly everyone goes to church Sunday morning. In other words, almost all of the gossipers are so-called Christians.

Before I moved here, I was honestly considering becoming a Christian. But having been around the Christians of McDowell County, I can firmly state that I'm glad I'm not, nor ever will be one.

You base not becoming a Christian on the fact that a lot of them gossip? Do you really think that it has anything to do with each other. I know a lot of people and I promise not all the gossipers are Christians. They come from every denomination.

I'm a little perplexed by your statement. In Mcdowell county there is only approximately 20 percent of the population that goes to church. So how do you automatically say that all church goers are the blame for the gossip? To become saved or not is a personal quest and your indecision should not be blamed on others. Don't try placing the blame for your personal confusion on others. Either you believe in God and Jesus or you don't. Either you believe in heaven and hell or you don't.
To say that you are not going to become a christian because all christians gossip is like saying all children have sticky fingers therefore I am not going to touch or be touched by any of them.

a non-believer myself, I come to this forum for intellectual discussion and find there are thinkers in Mcdowell county. I have always suspected that to "come out" as a non-believer would be equivalent to "coming out" that you are gay. Its just the nature of living in a small southern town with little diversity and education.

I wonder where you got that 20% figure about number of church goers? I would have suspected much more.

sorry that you are confused about the side action in marion or mcdowell. there is a preacher that used to be in marion that now has a church in morganton. you might check there. he can tell you about, if any side action that you speak of. leave mcdowell out of the equation.

Okay, let me reword so you can understand. I was under the impression that a Christian realizes that although he can't be perfect, he'll do his best to act as God would expect.

Overwhelmingly, the times I've been lied to gossiped about, cheated out of money, and generally had to deal with people of exceedingly low moral quality in McDowell County were the people who most loudly profess I should follow the path of God like they do.

In short, between the Christians and non-Christians I've met in McDowell County, the Christians have, as a whole, been far more likely to act in a morally repulsive manner. Why would I choose to be counted among such a group?

I find it interesting that the way Christians have acted around these parts have set me against Christianity, yet you're annoyed at *me* for using the behavior of local Christians as a guide of who NOT to emulate.

You continue to make me glad I'm not one of those two-faced people.

I did not say anything about being annoyed at you, I just said that I am perplexed as to why you would say that you chose not to be a christian because of some peoples actions. I try my best to not be like the people that you have talked about.

I just dont understand why you would allow other peoples actions make a personal decision for you. It is not fair of you to make the statement that most christians are gossipers, there are some very good christians in McDowell County. Making the statement that you made is like saying all Muslems are terrorist or all Catholics are child molestors.

You also stated that I continue to make you glad that you are not one of the two-faced people, well that is not a very good statement to make considering you don't even know anything about me. I could very well be your best friend and you would never even know it.

I just think that it is very sad that you are pulling yourself away from a religion without finding the true belief of that religion all because a few people treated you badly.

Just remember that streotyping never works for all people. You may be able to classify some people and get it right but it will never be right for all.

I'm sorry you are having such a bad time with the people you are meeting in Mcdowell county.

I'm sorry too. Let me know if you want to hear about the time the pastor of a local church committed auto title fraud and used my name to lie to others. Also let me know if you want to hear about the pastor of a completely different church in Buncombe County that accepted $4200 to do my friend's roof and won't do anything about all the leaks caused by his shoddy job. Also let me know if you want to hear about the first dozen times I can pull off the top of my head a local self-proclaimed Christian has acted toward me in an unChristian way in the last year. It hasn't been a "few people."

The true belief of a religion is moot if so many of the people who profess to worship it act in a way contrary to their own teachings.

I'm not sure why you don't understand why I wouldn't want to become a Christian based upon the way they act locally. It's the best reason not to join. For example, I'm sure there are good people in gangs, though they may be few and far between. Still, I would refuse to join a gang based upon their lousy behavior. It would be disgusting to me to associate myself with a group of people who acted like that.

For the same reason, I refuse to associate myself with another group in McDowell County that acts in an abhorrent, two-faced way. I'd be quite ashamed to name myself among part of a group that acts the way they do so often. While I believe there are good Christians in McDowell County, I think the disengenuous, gossipers, and hypocrites are far more common and it speaks much of the "good" Christians that they don't openly and loudly distance themselves from those people.

Again, count me out. I don't want to be associated with the type.

So, I grew up in Marion, 18 years...finally moved away...anyway...I agree with you. There are very few people that go to Church and it is a genuine experience. Most of the Church goers there are hypocrites, that being the reason I didn't go to Church there. I would go to Church with my ex-boyfriend and his family, and I hated it. His mother would stare a hole into my head, judging me rather, which is a prime example of hypocrisy. I loved the preacher, but she made me feel so uncomfortable I couldn't concentrate.
