How did this sheriff get into office or have you forgot? The previous sheriff resigned because one of his deputies was running 110 MPH down I-40, slammed into a car, killed a small girl and crippled her mother, while injuring other family members too. Apparently that deputy was following procedure of not running emergency lights and sirens on interstate. The previous sheriff knew he was accountable for the actions of his deputies. As is this sheriff. Not saying the deputy killed this guy. Just saying that whatever happened, including why the deputy simply left the guy there to only be found dead in a burning structure 3 hours later, needs to be fully disclosed. If they thought the guy was incapacitated, or if they thought he was mentally unstable, then the issue of why he was not taken for observation needs to be addressed. They are letting the press know the guy had been taken to the hospital by deputies a day or two before this incident because the guy was "incoherent." To me, it sounds like they are laying the groundwork to claim he did this to himself. Even that is troubling if he was asking for help immediately before this happened. The point is that this was a tragic event regardless, and from the initial reports, appears to have been avoidable. That does not need to be simply swept under the rug.
It shouldn't be swept under the rug but more than likely will be!

That and I hear the FBI told him that it might be a good idea to retire.

The Sheriffs department is a tax funded public agency and should have to answer to the public for all their actions, wrong or right. It seems like the people that put this sheriff in place now think he is above the people that pay his salary. With that being said this man should have been either taken to the hospital ER or to Broughton when the responding officer saw how he was acting. This sheriff is becoming an embarrassment to our county. It wasn't even a month ago that he orchestrated a 7 hour stand off while calling in law officers from three surrounding counties for a man that was not even armed or in the house that they were surrounding. Greene's ignorance and bad judgement and starting to catch up with him.

They do harrass younger and lower class people everyday. Most of the time they just laugh at them when they need help. They arrest younger people just for the fun of it. My boyfriend has been a victim of this " teasing " , and I'm sure a lot others have been too. When they report to a scene they are required to do paper work. Our cops arent fond of paper work..... go figure.

Unfortunately a officer cannot force a person to go to the ER for medical and psch evaul if they refuse. Sounds as if this person was distraught, possibly intoxicated at done point maybe. Often they don't know what they want and tell officer, friends people are after them, are offered help and are then sent away due to a mood change, paranoia or whatever. I've saw iit happen. It's sad and difficult to handle a situation like this. Maybe this is not even close to what went on but it's unfortunate for sure and any situation deserves analyzation by experts in the field. I go think the dept gets less credit than they deserve most times as people jump on the fault bandwagon. Just sayin'

I had a friend who live in the Eastfield community a few years back. I stopped by his home for 2 minutes to drop off a weedeater I had borrowed. As soon as I left, I turned onto Baldwin ave. and was pulled by a deputy. He walks up to my truck and looks around and says "I thought your tag was expired but after getting out to look at it I can see it's up to date." I realize Stump Town is a seedy community but he had no right to pull me over. He could have very well ran my tag without pulling me over. I started to tell him he was full of shit but I kept my mouth shut and continued home.

I'm sure a officer responded to the call for help. I would think if someone was there trying to hurt the victim then they would have arrested that person. However, if they responded and nobody was there trying to hurt anyone then the only reasonable thing for the officer to do would be go to the next call. I would love to have a officer campout in my front yard, but we all know that is impossible. If the victim knew who was trying to hurt him then he should have sought criminal charges through the court system. If he was truely scared for his life then he should have went to a family memebers house for the night. Probably what happened was the person was out of his mind and accidently set the house on fire and in turn accidently killed himself. In reality a family memeber or friend that knew him or of his situation should have sought to have him evaluated by a doctor. The officer that responded probably didn't know him personally so that officer shouldn't have been the one to commit him. It is sad, but sounds like our officers did all they could, but family and friends dropped the ball and now somebody is pointing fingers.

Only if they are causing harm to themselves or someone else, and yes, more than you know.
