The problem here is some acting like something they're not. It is an unfortunate reality that there are some (especially elders) who have problems with illiteracy. I had a grandfather and a father-in-law who could barely read or write a word, but they made it through life the best they could. Their grammar wasn't good nor was the ways in which they spoke, but they had more common knowledge than most of you self proclaimed educated idiots will ever have. They taught me more about how to live than any of you idiots can even fathom. If some of you are so ashamed of your heritage or how some of your native neighbors speak or what grammar they use, then why don't you simply go to an area where you can hide out and not be so embarrassed? You want to call me an idiot when it is you that is ashamed of what you really are or where you came from. Having a pretty accent, using more proper grammar and knowing how to properly spell every word in the English language isn't impressing anyone but yourself. There's nothing that sounds dumber than a southerner trying to speak with a northern accent...LOL....hell, I even have some in my own family. Do as my nick-name says..."Grow up"....be proud of what you really are, of where you really came from, and stand up for your southern heritage instead of cursing it. There's nothing more shameful that any person being ashamed of their own heritage. There's a thousand and one much more important topics to be worrying about that someone's use of grammar. if you have such a problem with some people, why don't you take it up with those people personally? My guess is you know better....if you did, you'd be talking talking through your tooth.....lmao<quoted text>
What you are missing is that the topic of this topic was pointing out the horrible grammar used in posts in general--not a personal attack on any one person or group, nor a lesson. I didn't see any homework assigned or tests given.
I am not a transplant. I was born and raised in Marion and lived there through adulthood. I received the same education that everyone else who grew up here did and I still manage to speak/type with proper grammar. I never said we were backward, dumb, uneducated or stupid--you brought that into the discussion. Speaking properly does not make one an idiot, but it does show that one is educated and I have never heard of anyone (until you) that said having an education is a bad thing.
The place I came from (Glenwood, by the way) is not more advanced nor more exciting than most places, but I am proud to say that I am a McDowell County product that can speak properly and wishes that more citizens would make an effort to do the same. I am in no way picking on Marion, this just happens to be my town and the Topix board I get--it is an epidemic around America and the English-speaking world to abuse our language to the point where it is almost unrecognizable.
I hope you haven't taken offense to anything I have said, but I do have the right (as you do) to express my opinion in a civilized manner and this is exactly what I have done. Have a good day!
