Just who is over the McDowell Youth Football organization? It was brought to my attention last year that it is a completely separate and private group from other divisions of sports. I want to know why? Who is appointed to this group and who appoints them? I am tired of the unfair rules that are in place and the continuous bending of the rules to fit many self-serving needs. Anyone care to speak up?

Two of the biggest problems with the unfair rules are two individuals from Marion Bombers. Coaches or want to be coaches CK and JS.

The Youth Football in McDowell County goes all the way back to the Optimist Club in the 1970's. When they got out of the football business, there was a small group who got together and tried to sell the idea of having the County Rec. take over. The County basically turned it down saying that it wouldn't be worth their time in running a youth football program...folks if you wanna know why basketball has always been bigger than football in this county, I think you can trace it back to reasons like that.

That said...The youth football program, 30-plus years later is still running to this day ( by some of those same people who asked for the county's help 30 years ago). While folks may not like some of the things that may go on at the games, I think the longevity of this league speaks for itself. I played in the league back in the early 90's while some faces have changed through the years I still enjoyed it more than I did baseball or basketball.

Their sign up rates today have been and still are the cheapest of any youth sports league in the county. It's not like the rec where they pay 40 dollars to play hoops in a five dollar t-shirt...these kids are fitted and they look good on the field.

The youth football kids are properly taken care of in terms of equipment, insurance coverage, etc...(I've got two relatives that play)

And when it comes to financial hardships, the youth football is much more flexible than the Rec...

Yes, bring out the pings and get some tournaments going. McDowell has some great players and this could start some good competion maybe between counties and even go statewide.

In response to "Marion needs to grow"....although I appreciate your response, you're only kidding yourself if you really believe what you just posted. The league does nothing for the kids other than provide a biased and dishonest environment. We parents have always provided the finances with the fees we pay and with the fundraisers we support. Without our money and support, the league wouldn't exist...period!

The league makes up their own rules as they go. For example: Last season, my son played on the Nebo pups division who went undefeated for the first time in school history. Our kids played hard, but fair and above all....legal! All of our kids were within their age bracket. The Marion Bombers on the other hand, allowed a player who was too old by several months to play all season. They knew they were breaking the rules and so did the league, yet no one did anything about it.

As it ended up, we were to play Marion for the championship. A week prior to the game, a meeting of the coaching staff from both teams as well as with league officials was held. It was presented to us to overlook and allow Marion to play with the illegal player. We declined to allow the illegal player since we were playing legally and within the rules all season. Everyone agreed to play the game anyway, but with the prearranged agreement that Marion would forfeit if they allowed this player to play. Marion ended up winning the game by one TD late in the game. Immediately following the game, one of Marionís coaches by the name of Antwan (sp?) came running to the sidelines yelling ďget someĒ showing his black ass like the fool he isÖ.showboating over a win he knew was a forfeit. Such a childish act of disrespect. These were 7-8 yr olds mind you.

Most of the spectators there that day knew nothing about the situation and most left there thinking Nebo lost. No one bothered to announce to the crowd what exactly the outcome was, but we did in fact get the championship. We played hard all season, had tremendous support and were excited. But, the joy was left scarred by how this nonsense was handled and this left me personally furious. Just what message is this dishonesty sending to the kids? That it is ok to cheat??

OkÖ.this season, we decided to allow our son to move up to the hounds division early which is allowed. He signed up early, has been to every practice and started every game. This past week we were informed by the coach (Keith Boone) that several older players just decided that they wanted to playÖ.3 games into the seasonÖand since they had played before, they would be given priority and that our son would not be starting anymore and would not be getting nearly as much playing time. Apparently there is no cut-off time for allowing players to come to teams. Who is the bone head that allows this? How is this fair? Why did these players not sign up like everyone else? None of these have been to practice nor played in any of the previous games, yet there were automatically give preferential treatment just because they were older. We have removed our son from this team and placed him back on the pups team.

I do not want our son given anything that he doesnít earn. I do not hold him any higher than any other member of the team, but I am not going to stand for any other player being held higher or better than him either. This is a factual situation that DID happen. Why are we allowing this unfair environment to exist?

Even if it was run by the mcdowell county rec department the rules would still get broken. they do every year with every sport I have seen. There is always a coach or area director that knows Sue and she will let them get by with anything. I don't know why they even type up a list of rules and hand them out.

I know who JS and CK is from the 2nd post and that doesn't surprise me either. They are only out for their kids and not the entire group.

Hey guys namely Swine Flu and Marion needs a change, here we go. Can't add much here tonight, but look for more from me in the near future. There is change in the wind concerning the youth football program here in Marion. More to follow later.

I would remind you that MCYFL is a non-profit organization that is privately run by the governing board of the organization. Someone else could try to start a league of their own, but unless they have , say,$100000 or so for equipment, that isn't gonna happen.

It's a funny thing that back when the Optimist club quit sponsoring Youth Football, McDowell County Rec Dept wouldn't touch it. It wouldn't make money for them at the time. The county will pay $500000 for baseball fields at Maple Leaf, Skate Parks get built, and the original plans for the Corpening foundation that were used for YMCA included football fields but were changed to soccer. If everyone would quit griping about how bad football is in this county and get behind DOING something about it, we will be competitive with other counties.

Every youth league team in this county went to Coach Gowan's meetings last year to learn his system. At least 4 teams in the league are running his offense. Both Jr highs are. There are nearly 400 players in youth league this year. 46 players at West Jr High. East looks to have around 35 and the Titans had 49 9th graders out this year.

Within 3 to 4 years everything will turn positive from the top down with participation what it is right now. Everyone needs to be patient.

As for how anyone feels about MCYFL, I dare anyone to prove to me that it's not the best run youth league sports organization in Mcdowell County. Hardship cases play, no child is turned away becase of money. The league has even picked up the costs for physicals for kids who can't afford them. Every dime of money above equipment goes into new equipment and expenses (insurance). Yes, programs fundraise for equipment also. They have to because of what it costs to outfit the kids, buying training equipment, etc. At least the league doesn't charge $100 or more like other counties, or rip you off like the YMCA or Rec Dept where you'll pay $50 for soccer or baseball and they give your kid a hat or t-shirt and YOU provide the rest of the equipment.

Baaaadog, I hope you are involved with the league now. If not I urge you to volunteer your time. If there are changes you would like to make then get involved! The league always needs more help.

The original plans for the Y didn't include football fields to my knowledge. I was on the committee.

Maybe not the original plans for the Y itself, but it was my understanding that the proposal by the Corpening Foundation originally included a football field. My apologies if I'm incorrect on that.

What gripes me is that there are only 2 regulation football fields in this county. There used to be 3 until Old Fort tore down the goalposts and ran a sewer line down the middle of the field. There are too many baseball fields to count in this county and as for soccer, well, football was here first and our kids were playing it. But there is no support for football in our local govt. or among the powers that be. Hell, we cant even volunteer free services to make improvements to East Jr.'s field (and we have offered in the past). Has to be county personnel doing the work and there's never any money in the school system's budget to get anything done to it. But we needed more baseball fields so the county paid $500000 bucks to get that done.

I've got nothing against baseball or soccer. Kids need to be involved in something and football ain't for everybody. I just wish football got more support from the community. We have between 300 and 500 kids in the local youth league every year but we get no support from anyone other than the parents of the kids, the volunteers who coach, and a few local businesses who help sponsor the league.

The thing is with the baseball/softball fields, they get used from March to the end of November with all the travel teams using them. If you ever go to Maple Leaf on most weekends in the summer and fall you won't find a place to park. There is tournaments every other weekend just about all year. Don't say there is too many fields because there is not enough. When you have 8 to 10 (usually more) teams in each age group (8u through 16u/18u) then the more fields the better.
