It seems to me that alot of people seem to be very upset with the goings on at the DSS and now the Health Dept. I have a couple of friends that now work at both places and a couple who no longer work at the DSS. To the point that the Director does as he pleases, a case IN FACT, is when an employee was questioned about some things that were being said (by other employees) concerning their supervisor "showing favoritism to one employee or another", the supervisor proves to the director in black and white (monthly reports from the state office) that the claims being made are not factual and the directors response is "this (referring to the reports) doesn't matter, it is a matter of perception that counts". And believe me when I say, it is only his perception that counts. When people in that agency are being reprimanded because of who they go to lunch with or how they walk down the hall, then something needs to change. And I do know, FOR A FACT, that he does do his personal business during office hours and he is very partial to those employees that help him with his 'Paws for a Purpose'. Everytime there is a dog in need of help, e-mails are sent to every employee and personal conversations take place concerning this animal. If he treated his staff, management as well as line workers (his words, not mine) as well as he does his dogs, life would be good in that building. However, he does not. If you are being one of his "helpers", doing things that need to be done in the building, that are not exactly in your job description, then all is well. But, if you ever disagree with him or one of his "favorites", then, you are chastised, written up and he is then out to get you, no matter what it takes. I have seen it happen to more than one of my friends. Something needs to be done. No one will listen and it seems no one cares. And what hang-in there said about the children in foster care is absolutely the truth. Since his "regime" began, we no longer have a day care center, Holy Hills has been closed (because we no longer need a facility for children being removed from homes, because they are not removed) and more than 20 jobs have not been filled at the DSS when others have left. I assume that the Board of Commissioners, The DSS Board and probably the County manager find all of this okay, because it means the poor employees that are left can do more with less and budgets stay under, and the children in jeopardy from abuse and neglect, will be okay. Hopefully, no more of them will die. I would love to see something done about this man. He would not be so happy with some of his "favorites" if he knew how they talk about him behind his back and the names they have for him. Please, someone pay attention and do something before the entire situation is totally out of hand.

i have not read all of these posts but let me tell you one thing.. the mcdowell county DSS is the worst place to try to get help .i have heard them tell men if they want help to get their girlfriend pregnate and then they can help them. i have seen good parents took to court and dss try to taketheir kids away and leave abused childern in their homes and never bug the parents again. i have my self went in needing help to get a child to the dr and they refused to help saying the dr wasnt in mcdowell county they couldnt help me get him there. i have had them deny me a ride to the dr. they even tried to get me for fruading the system when it wasnt me that lie or even my application it was sonme one elses and they passed them by and investagated me because they coouldnt get a hold of the person that lied.and i have also seen that the people that work there dont know half the programs that they offer and when you do go in knwing exactly what you need help with they look at you like your a walfare deiva. and to be honest i know good parents that have jumped threw their hopes of shit just so they could get the help they needed because it seems the only way to get help in marion is to be a bad parent . then if your being investagated for neglect or abuse they will give you and your family all the help you need... some thing needs to be done and not to long back i seem to remember a lawsuite going around against mcdowell county daa for herassment for just some of these reasons. o for all of you out there i am really sorry you have to deal with this place at all.

Sorry I asked. I was just confused by your post about the rave reviews for not getting the work done. It was worded a little strange! Can you tell me what an intake caseworkers job is?
an intake worker as they do it in marion is the same as a case worked but the differance is you never have to see thoses people but in passing the intake worker is the person that sees you to tell you what you are qualified for and what you have to do to begin trying to get help then they shuffel you off to another worker your next appointment and the the funny thing is that the turn over is really really high at mcdowell county dss. i know alady that had 5 case workers in one year.

Did anyone see this? And can anyone confirm the truthfulness of his resume as it pertains to McDowell County DSS? Go to the following website and then scroll down to Phillip Hardin.. as it is interesting and fictional reading..

This just in.... All DSS employees that have had their "job duties" changed more than 3 times since the beginning of the year? Please chime in..

It seems that Mr. Hardin indeed likes to play GOD when he is out for blood and or wants to get rid of his "line workers".

Either he is out to make the employees crazy just to enjoy the show OR and I do say OR.... he really has no damn clue what he is doing in that position and is trying to "wing it" before someone figures it out... BUT

GUESS WHAT? They all know and if they didn't they will soon... see you in print.

Why are County employees not required to live inside the county? After reading his resume it's a shame he doesn't want Marion "to be the best city to live in and the best run goverment there is" Does he have a county car to drive to Asheville?

It's almost like he cares about Asheville, and just comes down here to play.

You get the prize.... I agree with you on the resume and wanting Marion to be the best city it can be and I agree that for a position of Director we have plenty of qualified indiviudals living right here in McDowell County who not only could do the job BUT care about the county and city for which they live.... Kudos to you and why can not everyone see the light?

OH and on a small note: his resume regarding what he has done since working for McDowell DSS.. Is a bold face lie but what else do you expect from a wantabe politician, right?

WNC Producer....
Ask some of your contacts/inside sources about the disparaging comments said director has made in reference to our County since he began his "reign" at DSS...The same county where he is the director to the agency with the biggest link to our people in need...and yes, Just Reading gets the prize on their comment!

I read the application and resume. It is quite entertaining and mostly full of half truths and a lot of untruths. "good common sense" is not something he has the ability to use. At one point in time, there was a director that had to have a local address, even though he too lived in Buncombe County. They required him to at least show the appropriateness of living in McDowell County. But it appears that Mr. Hardin has the ability to blow enough smoke in the right places that he does not have to follow any prior procedures or be accountable for any of his current actions. I hope WNC Producer, that you have what it takes to help bring this reign to an end. Good luck.

Wonder,

Thank you and I will try. You know what started out as a way to bring information to everyone's attention has proven to be quite the eye opener. I have to say I do feel sorry for any person working under his thumb.

I can say this without revealing too much, I have sent information given to me to all the right places and let us hope that those who can will finally do something.

Just thought to clear a small error. There have been three deaths and none will be investigated. So Parents scream, yes scream that you will sue him even though we know you can't let the world know your child is safer at home then under his management.

I hate to inform poor Mr. Hardin BUT he can be sued right along with DSS. He can not hide behind some bylaws that may or may not exist. He as any other individual can be brought in front of a civil suit, trust me. He may have everyone believing he is untouchable but he and both know he is not safe.
He can hide behind his job and the facility but they will throw him to the wolves if the right attention comes to case.

I love how all the people here truly feel that they have no rights at work or as an individual. This idea that this state can hire and fire at will with no recourse for the worker is CRAZY.

Look it up sometime google the meaning of right to work state, hell read some statutes, get educated people!

So to address Hang in There... I have sent all these postings to Mitch and Joe as well as our governor and every news media with a kind letter stating the facts.. Let's hope that someone will take notice... Oh and I also have sent a copy to all Board members and County Com. as well.

I wonder just how many of these individuals really and truly know what Mr. Hardin is doing and how supportive will these Marion residents be of the man when they get thrown into the spotlight??

Just a thought... But isn't it time that all of you stand up to this man's crap as employees? Is he going to fire everyone? Doubtful, and those who get fired... well ever heard of LAWSUIT? It takes many to move a mountain and it will take all of you standing up to make a wrong - right again.

Better hope your DSS worker don't go on vacation because you want get any help until they return. I know someone who went to get their EBT renewed and had to do without until her case worker came back to work. I had to go buy them food. I pay my TAXES so why should a have to buy food for someone just because no one else at DSS could help her. The paper work was done all they had to do is drop it in the mail. How hard is that? I am not saying it is the DSS workers fault. Nevertheless, someone needs to answers for it.
I have been in management before “IF SOMEONE IS GOING ON VACTION THEN YOU GET SOMEONE ELES TO DO THEIR JOB!!!!!” They are letting kids down they still have to eat!!!!!!!!! I bet he did not do without food for a week just because someone went on vacation!!!!!!!

I today have a smile, why because producer you have been strung, C. A. a County Comm. does know very well and clearly and he is NOT getting involved. As for Joe he reallyyy does know and feels he is doing a good job. This is why it is so hard, the workers have no where to turn or any low management. Parents are out raged and have reason, all he does care about it two issues. 1. animals, 2 what the publics view is, and as long as he can manipulate the facts as he does then he is safe. If only there was something we could do.

BS is the correct degree he has and full of. Hopefully he has to back up that resume. It is full of lies. The reason the foster kids were sent home was because he was having to pay for them to be in care. One was sent home then died. The turnover now is mostly by people being fired at his hand and for petty things or things that others get away with everyday.
