What is next with local government control. I strongly feel that
we need less rules and regs, and more srevice from our local government. What does everyone else think?

Next they will pass an ordinance saying you can't question there actions. No seriously I think some car wash owners will complaint about competition on Saturdays and Advance and Autozone will be limited on how many carwashes that can occur in their parking lots per month. If a dentist's office wants to let people use their parking lot every Saturday for a yard sell, well so what? How is that any different than patients coming and going all day? Maybe you don't want your driveway bloked every Friday and Saturday moring in a residential area, I undertand and appreciate and agree with that. But to limit sales in a parking lot of a business just shows the attitude of those that are in power and have money have about those of us without and trying to survive. I hope this could be Clark's catgate!

As long as I make the payments and pay my taxes it is my property and I will use it as I see fit. I never have yard sales but I may start now just for spite.

I agree with everything said here. It's our property, and can be used the way we see fit.

Maybe this new "rule" they have, is written in a way to allow a very nice little technicality.

So what exactly defines "yard sale", if it's in a parking lot... is it technically a yard? Also... what if we decide to call it a business sponsored clearance sale?

Can't count those can you City Council? It seems to me they just don't have anything to do... so they're having to find things to make up.

I'm going to start counting how many times Everette Clark's family walks their dogs on Main Street... and if they pass by First Baptist more then 5 times in a week, we're going to start issuing citations.

Wouldnt it be great if EVERY single property owner in the City Limits had a yard sale on the same Saturday morning to show disapproval of this rediculous (another rediculous ordinance!) ordinace? Never happen I know but good ol Everette would lose his mind! Everette, PLEASE find something constuctive to concentrate on about the City, not yard sales. Earn your pay!!

Are you kidding??? What business is it of anybody elses if I have 2 yard sales in August???
Oh! Wait!! I need a part time job. Maybe the city will hire me as LT. DETECTIVE of the YARD SALE POLICE.
I could drive around, air conditioner humming, binoculars round my neck, searching out every lot in town that has opened up a " Clara Belle's Outgrown Emporium & Back of the Kitchen Drawer Trash & Junk Store". I'd write their address down so when I come out next week I can see if they've violated the new laws of the town! Let's see now. They'd have to give me a car, keep it fueled & serviced, buy me a spiffy uniform, pay me a good salary for cruisin every street in town for 5 or 6 hours on Fridays & Saturdays. Probably better add Thursdays too cause some folks have the audacity to open up on that day. That'd take me more than 20 hours a week so they'd be paying me vacation, health & dental insurance, sick leave, holidays &
anything else I could make them fork over.
I wonder what the fine would have to be to make this new law pay for itself.
HOW STUPID!!!
Don't they think our cops have anything better to do? I could better understand it if they let me ride a convertible with a highly trained cop dog riding shotgun. He could be sniffin' out drug cookers & dealers while I draw tiny little YARD SALE signs on my city map.
What are they gonna stick their nose in next?? I'm with "It's My Property". It IS my property and if I wanna have a Yard Sale, Rummage Sale, Garage Sale, or Rag Picking I'll have it. And if I don't sell it all that day, I'm probably gonna have another one again next weekend. I'll have to take the next weekend off though so I can go yard sale shopping myself. I'd hate to miss out on a real bargain & I might find me something I could sell next weekend for more than I paid for it today.
This would be real funny if it wasn't dumb!!

Yep, our cops do have better things to do... like D-Line! Randy Jimmy Cyr and Brian McDaniels sniff out these hardened criminals that we call teenagers...

You see... these teenagers have the audacity to sit in their vehicles in public, roll the windows down, AND talk to each other... can you believe that?

I'm glad we have cops like JC and Brian McDaniel to save us from these big bad trouble causing teenagers sitting in their vehicles. Sounds kinda like the Yard Sale police, maybe we can use Brian and JC for this?

If you lived in the city on one of the dead end streets, you could understand the chaos of constant yard sales. People block your driveway or park in it to visit your neighbor's sale and you can't leave or get in.

If you must have yard sales every Saturday, go to the trade lot and rent a spot.

Maybe Freddie Killough is trying to limit competition for the Sidewalk Sale the Marion Business Association sponsors?

To be effective letters must be brief, polite, and legal. Letters should be carbon copied to the City Council and City management, the State Senators, Representatives and and all the regional media outlets.

I've been in many towns in my life. Out of all of those places, I recall only three of them that had people randomly putting up yard sales in abandoned lots. They aren't "yard sales." They're "empty lot sales." Those towns that allowed that gypsy-like behavior were the three worst towns I've been in. This is one of those three.

When any person can just occupy whatever spot they feel like on a Saturday, as they do on East Court Street, you end up with a nasty-looking town. More nasty-looking than it already does, anyway. It almost looks like homeless people selling their crap.

And it really is crap. All there is to buy at these empty lot sales is crusty old clothing and hard items on par with old Little Mermaid McDonald's Happy Meal toys from the 1990s.

I can't blame the city for doing this one bit. They're trying to make the town not look trashy.

If you want to have a yard sale, why not HAVE IT IN YOUR YARD?

And if you suck and don't have a yard, borrow the yard of a friend for one afternoon?

And if you don't have any friends, why not just kill yourself?

Or even better, why not pay $3 for a table at the Trade Lot?

There's absolutely no reason to ugly up this town more than it already is. Good for the city.

I believe that the City will have a hard time enforcing their new regulation. First court challenge and it will be tossed out. I do believe this could blow up into another "Friskie's-Gate" if given the proper push.... I think I'll write a nice letter to the editor of the McDowell News.
