Listen, someone who uses God, does not mean they are a Christian, besides they no longer have prayer in schools for that matter. The issue is freedom of speech; being able to express yourself, thats it! If I want my child to grow culturally, open mindedly, and not end up having some disoreder "like avoidant personality disorder" (which is caused by extreme moments of humiliation and embarrasement like this issue) than he/she will be able to write poems about the devil, God,aliens, or astrologists for that matter! This is honest to God the most ridiculous act of immaturaty by adults I have ever witnessed. Grow up..
Now, this child probably doensnt know who will defend her, who to look up to, who her role models are, etc. She may grow up not believing in anything because of all this immaturity by adults!

If this child wrote the poem and was censored by the school representative it was the child's rights that were violated. This religious expression was not initiated by the state or a state representative. It was a citizen or in this case a student that expressed a religious theme or conviction. Numerous court decisions have protected this kind of speech.
But you still choose to ignore one basic fact that has been stated over and over. The child DID NOT WRITE this poem. It was stated before the school board several times. Her own mother admitted to writing it. The child just added some rhyming words. This was orchestrated and carried out just to raise someone's ire enough to complain and get this slime ball rolling so we would wind up with the controversy we have today. This was and is a creation of the Christian right with one purpose. Let's not pretend otherwise.

“The poem was produced (at least in part) by one of the teachers at the school. The poem was not a class assignment and it was not done at school.”
While not entirely false, the teacher who helped the student create the poem also happens to be her mother.
Those present at December’s Board of Education meeting heard Crawley describe how the poem was created.
Crawley stated that her daughter was asked to write a poem for the Veterans Day program by her teacher (who isn’t Crawley).
When the youngster became frustrated after trying to write the poem on her own, Crawley, along with the rest of the family, helped the young girl construct the poem and make it her own style.

To clarify how the poem came about, the mother of the little girl, Renata Crawley, with the support of her husband, Greg Crawley, spoke to the board and those at the meeting about their feelings concerning the incident.
During the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting, Crawley explained that her daughter was assigned to write about her grandfathers -- who both served in the armed forces -- for the school’s Veterans Day program.
She stated that after her daughter was assigned to write the poem, the youngster became frustrated. To help ease some of that tension, Renata, along with the rest of the family, helped the young girl construct the poem.
“My daughter struggled writing about her grandfathers when writing this poem,” stated Renata.“She is 6 years old and does not know much about war or the armed forces.”
Crawley said the family worked together on the poem, with her 6-year-old daughter assisting with rhyming words to make the poem “her style.”
While creating the poem, the family decided to write about the little girl’s grandfather, Bud, who carried a prayer stone to Vietnam with him, which inspired the now controversial lines that would later be censored.

ok, im a bit confused. we have seperation of church/state.But not church/federal? The president/politicians pray all the time in front of americans, to God. Our flag and our pledge of allegience refers to "one nation under God", our money has this same statement on it too! Quite confusing wouldnt you say? HOw about telling the parent who started this ****, to burn his American flag and money, if he/she is going to go around ruining a child's self-esteem!! Oh, and ask the school to white out God on the students lunch money, or create a new currency for the children so they can have lunch at school, peacefully! Also, please inform me on the ability for our president/s to refer to God, but not an american citizen?? If anyone could clear this up for me, i would be most obliged...
Refering to State of the Union Address said by the presidents of this nation, our leaders.(1/20/13)
With all of that in mind, President Obama fashioned a speech that hewed closely to themes of unity and humility through faith, but which also seemed to suggest an equal share in Godly wisdom for all. He fashioned much of the speech around the dual Bibles that were used in his second inauguration, those once belonging to, respectively, Dr. Martin Luther King and President Abraham Lincoln.“As I prepared to take the sacred oath,” President Obama said,“I thought about these two men, and I thought of how, in times of joy and pain and uncertainty, they turned to their Bibles to seek the wisdom of God’s word — and thought of how, for as long as we’ve been a nation, so many of our leaders, our Presidents, and our preachers, our legislators and our jurists have done the same. Each one faced their own challenges; each one finding in Scripture their own lessons from the Lord.”

The book of Matthew:

6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Most of you, if not all, need a Constitutional reminder. No where does it say to keep Church and State separate.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." That's it…no mention of any separation. So it is clear the Constitution itself neither endorses nor supports a separation of church and state.
You cannot argue facts. You can disagree but a fact is a fact not the uneducated opionons most of you spew. If you had enough sense you would be ashamed of yourselves.

So which religion are we supposed to recognize. "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion." So you would be ok with a teacher leading your child in prayer if that teacher were a Muslim, or Wiccan, or Hindu? I mean, if there is no separation of church and state, then it must include all churches/religions.

Paul, simply stated the Government is not allowed to create a sanctioned religion (use the Church of England as an example). Would I want my child led in prayer by a teacher of any relgion? Yes, I would, but in order to do so my children have been privately educated. The bigger issue here is that people scream and shout about their rights, when they have no idea what those rights really are.

Oh quit your whining, it was the right thing to do regardless of anyone's religious views.

Schools are public institutions (state) and should therefore be separated from the church. That's just how it is.
