Yeah I was shocked when I read the paper for 100,000 you could buy a house you know.Seems fishy to me.It shouldn't be funded by the county or taxpayers pockets. We got enough stuff to deal with last thing we need is this.Mayor Steve Little saying how much money it saves is ridiculous.

U know u both are very wrong and rude. That place is doing its best to help people, to show love and compassion yet we have people like u that feels the need to mess things up. I only pray n hope that the two of u will never be in this situation where u have to live on a place like that.
The shelters help both men and women get there education, a job, homes of there own, get things the kids n parents need. The McDowell missions are the only shelters in NC that u can stay as long as they need to as long as those people are working on bettering themselfs and if u would go by there u would c for yourself.
N if I was u I'd be careful with what u say because the good lord works in ways we will never understand and one day u may end up in a place like that n eat the words ur saying now!!!!

I see that the 1st to comments are saying that no matter what its not worth the money to fund "these people" and their place to live because they are homeless.I guess they are also stating they are better than them and will never end up in a place like that and if god forbid they did they wouldnt care about heat, air or plumbing..thats good to know we have people who if they had to would lower their standard of living because they are homeless. Without shelters where do you think "these people" would live maybe on your doors step when its cold maybe in the park you take your child to or maybe in your streets where you shop, yes that is what McDowell County is looking for. Maybe we should run up county bills more by putting them in jail or hospitals etc. NO maybe everyone should step up and help the mission help them get back on their feet. No one wants to be at a shelter I am sure, But they shouldnt be made to live with out because they are in a shelter. Firecracker I think you speak from the heart, and I am sure they appreciate your words

I use to live at the Friendship. And i have to say if it wasnt for Mcdowell Mission Idont where i would be today. I got a job and saved my money so i could get out on my own. I volunter every chance i getand i donate too. Friendship home does a good job. And till you are homeless you shouldnt judge. the Friendship Home needs that money so there will be air in that buildng snd there will be heat. And they have plumbing problems. So iwill ask everyone if you have a extra money donate to the Frienship Home so they can get it all fixed Thanks. I agree with you Firecracker !00%

100,000 dollars is alot of money and if you don't understand how us regular people that have had hard times that you know nothing about manage without help then you won't understand. All they were saying is thats alot of cash to get from taxpayers who are already paying more for everything right now with nobody to help them. You guys are only looking from one pov i'd have more respect for you if you looked at it from how we see it too.

O and BTW they are not asking for 100,000 that's simply how much is needed all together.they are asking for 10,000 this year and 10 next year.

I went to the women's shelter once to donate baby clothes, women's clothes and games. I took about 10 or more large trash bags of items. The first thing I heard was Oh no, not more stuff. After that, I found other places who were very grateful to get donations.

I think it great that McDowell takes care of its own. I regularly donate to the shelters. If you see the kind of cars the directors drive it is obvious they are not pilfering the money. Look at some of the other organizations the community raises money for, most of that goes out of state? This money raised stays here and helps our people.

For anyone to say that I am not or have not been in a position to need help or shelter is a speculation on your part. For all you know I have had to use these services and have had a first hand look at how the shelter is ran and how people are treated there so before you judge me you should first check your facts. I say this is a joke because being homeless and on disability I was treated unfair and harsh. I saw where the donations went and who chose if you got help or not. The way people are singled out and mistreated are wrong. All I am saying is things may look great if your looking from the outside in but if you only knew you would think twice about donating anything to the agency. The homeless need the help but they also need someone to stand up for them so they can stop being mistreated by the staff.

I AGREE!!!!
There is no telling where the donations truley go when u ask for a tour of the building that dont even show u where they keep these donations of tolietries... why not??? maybe because they r not giving them out!!! and i do not agree with there rule of once u have been there once u can not come back if u r not clean.... some ppl want to change give them a chance.... and what about the rule of after being there 3 times u cant come back.. even if its yrs later.. why not?????????? i thought it was a homeless shelter?!?!?!
I also think its funny how the directors use there power to help out close family and friends and not the ones who truley need it!

What the Friendship House needs is to have undercover detectives find out where all the money, donations, and supplies the community already gives is going. Why does this organization always throw up the women's shelter and never mention the men's? Is it because women and children pull more heart strings? Please everyone get to know your charity before you donate. You may be surprised at what you find out. Volunteering is a great way to learn more about the organization.

and will someone please explain to me why they need this money for new when what they had worked perfectly fine!!! the girls have went without air all summer because the dumba**'s that run that place decided to take out the air conditioners!!! how come all the rooms have been redone but there is not heating and air??? shouldnt the heating and air have come first? It cost almost 10,000 to do each room and there are over 16 rooms thats well over 100,000 that could have gotten u heating and air!!!!!! and the bathrooms are what should have come before ANY of it considering they r full of black mold!!!!!!!!!! this place is run by idiots that have no true idea of what its like to be in these girls postion and from what ive seen of the womens director she is a Bi*** who does nothing but talk down to the girls that she does not consider her favorites!!! and Bill Warren why is ur office located at the womens shelter and not the mens considering u r a male! and y r u in ur office after hours somtimes till 12am?!?! and y do u give girls rides just u and them??? somthin seems fishy!!

I have a couple hundred dollars I want to donate to the shelter,,, but is want to be sure that it goes to people that are homeless ands not to the staff or to the county,, I've been homeless before for over six months and lived in a storage unit during the winter months with no food,, heat, plumbing and no money,, six degrees temperature and not having nothing but water for up to 3 or4 days at a time,,i want this money given to the people who live there so they can get cigarettes,, snacks or treats,, and other things they want to have other then just what they have to have to survive,,,i know exactly what they are going thru and what they wish they had money to get for their own self without everyone else having to get their hands on it,, and I won't donate unless I see first hand,, that the money is going directly to the people that live there,,i want to see it equally devided up and handed out directly to their hands,, not disappear in the red tape shuffle

you would be smart not to the girls only get what the director wants them to have and she plays favorites she has one girl that has been there for years that mindy lets her come spend the night with her several times a week not fair to other girls any other girl that was there for almost 10 years would be told to leave especially since she has left and been back more then 3 times ask to see supply closet before donating ask why the girls only get cheap single blade razors when there are others why they can not get lotion when there are 100s of bottles of them ask why staff gets first pick of donations

If I were you I would go and stand outside of the men's shelter and give the men that are staying there a few dollars. If you give it to the directors then the people in need will not get it. They do have their favorites there and do treat people horrible! The friendship house director is mean and takes stuff home with her. Ask the people that stay there, but be sure to ask the ones that are not her favorites.

I currently stay at the friendship home, I know first hand what goes on. Oh yeah, it seems like a good opportunity and they help so many people. No. Not quite. I give 110% and get nowhere, i see people get mistreated, I'm one of them. I see donations come in we never get, when we put something on the list we need out of the supply closet we're lucky if we get it. Our director has her favorites and those she seems to go after. Black mold all over the place, pipes leaking everywhere. Im pregnant and i have double chores for something i didn't do. But back to donations, they go to the Christian clothing store so they can make money off of it. I don't know where their money goes but it surely isn't to the home.

let me first say, BE GLAD YOU HAVE A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD...you are obviously there for a reason, if you dont like it then get a job and move out on your own. the friendship home is not in the best shape, i do agree but when you are on limited funding from grants and you rely on donations and community support its very hard and thats probably something the girls there dont understand. where would u be if it wasnt for the friendship home? are you gonna have a xmas this year? YES YOU ARE BECAUSE I HAVE BOUGHT FOR 6 CHILDREN WHO ARE LIVING THERE CURRENTLY AS TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE IN THIS COMMUNITY THAT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE XMAS! and as for the money from clothing store, its none of your business as a resident living there for free where the money goes but just to fill you in POWER, WATER, HEAT,TELEPHONE AND MAY OTHER THINGS THAT YOU USE ON DAILY BASIS FOR FREE IS NOT FREE TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SUPPORTING YOU. you got it so bad but i see somehow you have internet access to post, must not be so bad afterall. get up and out and get a job and quit living on the system and maybe you can better yourself! quit looking for hand outs!!!!

I was looking for a friend of mine that was supposed to be staying at the FRIENDSHIP HOME yet when i checked on it none seemed to know who she was and i know she was there , i also wanted to send her some money but was told i had to give it to the administrator instead, now why cant i just give it to her directly?.
Also it seems to me that it hasnt been that long ago that they were asking for money for the exact same thing,FRIENDSHIP HOME AND ITS ADMINISTRATORS need to be investigated the people who donate all this money needs to know where their money is going, and why does BILL WARREN have his office at the womens shelter instead of the mens? there are things going on in that place that needs to be looked at, and believe me i could tell you things (i get my information from an inside source)but since i dont have all day to tell you all everything ...have it investigated

since you know everything going on,its only a phone call away to the police, feds, state or whoever. must not be so bad or the shelter wouldnt be full all the time.
