I don't know anythng about the local hospice or its administrators but I do have a question. Why do so many McDowell County obituaries request that memorials be made to Rutherford County Hospice? I would deduce that if memorial requests are made for Rutherford County's chapter that many McDowell County residents are assisted by the Rutherford County folks. Is that true? If so, why?

I think that the R.C. Hospice has in house rooms for 24/7 patient care.

I may be wrong on this one, so please don't blast me if I am, but I think our Hospice organization is a lot like our Health Dept. The Health Dept. is socially and financially linked with Rutherford and Polk counties in an effort to provide as many services as possible without draining finances. I believe Hospice may also be financially linked with Rutherford county, with Rutherford being the main office for our area. It appears that Rutherford may be the distribution office for the finances.

I think the majority of the reason is that instead of spending the 2 million dollars for a in house patient care facility the Mcdowell county Hospice spent the money on an office. A lot of people feel like the money could have been used to help the patients instead of the staff. McDowell County residents were led to believe that the money was going to be used for a Hospice facility and not an office building!

Dear Rachael, If you feel that a person who posts on these forums needs to get a life, what do you feel you should do? What is the difference in someone else posting and you posting? Other than that person was making valid comments on the subject and you are just acting like a jerk. YOU GET A LIFE.

Hospice of McDowell has no affiliation financial or otherwise with Hospice of Rutherford. People are upset the money was spent on an administration building instead of patient facility. Me included. Completely happy with Hospice of Rutherford services. They provided care for my family, definitely recommend them. They also hire McDowell county residents to care for McDowell County patients.
thankfull

Rutherford hospice is trying to take over McDowell by a lying that MCDowell is no longer operating.they are not affiliated..support your local community hospice..the building was built under another administration and not coded for in house home is where the heart is and that is the point of hospice.thanks

You are right, when someone is told they will need hospice assistance they are ask which hospice agency they won't to use and are told the benefits of each one, and one of the greater benefits of Rutherford is The Hospice House, it has excellent care, McDowell shouldn't have blowed the money on a ritzy office building and built a hospice house!!!

Rutherford County has real Howell County does have a ospice Care and they do first class care of everyone in their care. McDowell County is not even in the running and only pretends to provide Hospice Care. McDowell does have a nice office where they can meet and pretend to have a Hopice Network. I know dozens of McDowell residents who have used the Rutherford County Hospice and loved the care their family were given. Their facility is very nice, clean and is a first class operation. Donations from McDowell Residents to Rutherd Hospice will run head and shoulders above donations to McDowell Hospice. I guess the proof is in the pudding. The Rutherford Hospice is as larger than the McDowell Hospital and run even better.

You have to demonstrate a need to have an inpatient unit and at the time the Hospice of McDowell facility was constructed, there was not a strong enough need for an inpatient unit in the county (which would not have warranted the funds to construct inpatient unit). As Hospice of McDowell continues to grow, they are in the process of receiving inpatient beds (in affiliation with McDowell Hospital) which was recently brought to public knowledge via local newspaper. If you actually walk into the office, you will see more of the business staff offices on the left and when you go to the right, it is more of a closed off area that houses the clnical staff to help ensure confidentiality and privacy (which is not fancy, just cubicle type areas). The bottom portion of Hospice holds clinical supplies and such. It is not at all as large as it seems. Hospice of McDowell strives to provide the necessary support and care to the patients whose desire is to remain at home for as long as possible with their loved ones as they near the end of life. They provide 24/7 care to their patients in the home and local care facilities (such as Rose Hill, Sunrise, and Autumn Care). They go above and beyond to ensure their patients receive excellent support and care. Feel free to ask a Hospice of McDowell patient about the services they receive or have received. There are many different Hospices who serve many counties. For instance, Hospice of McDowell can serve adjoining counties as well as McDowell and the same is to be said with Hospice facilities in other counties. Hospice of McDowell is a separate entity than neighboring hospices (such as Hospice of Rutherford County, Hospice of Burke County, and so forth).

People are upset because Hospice of McDowell County spent money on staff offices? Has anyone ever seen the offices and conference center in Rutherford County? They spared no money! McDowell County has not met the requirements for an inpatient facility yet. There is a lot of red tape to get through. They are however in the process. Rutherford County Hospice gets offended if other Hospices cross their county line, but seem to think it is alright to over take McDowell County. It is a double standard, but it is still all in the hand of the patient which Hospice they choose to serve their needs.

I have used both but mostly use Hospice of McDowell. They are good people and provide excellent service.. he big difference is the in patient unit. McDowell is trying to get a Certificte of Need for inpatient bed which I hope they get.

How sad that people actually speak so negatively about a wonderful organization as Hospice of McDowell who simply want to help those who are sick and dying.

McDowell hospice is wonderful but they really need a hospice house, it takes a special person to be able to work for hospice, I admire them ALL!!!

Current director, "Kit" Cosgrove, has run off most quality employees. Thankfully though many of the great ones now work at Rutherford. The bottom line is better care and services for Rutherford patients. Every facet of Rutherford exceeds McDowell. Hospice of McDowell has too many admin staff over the age of 55. New blood and especially a new director would only be the start. I didn't realize till a year ago that we could use Rutherford Hospice for my dad. They could offer so much more than McDowell it was a no brainer. Most of Dad's hospice staff actually lived in McDowell. Hopefully McDowell's board of directors will wake up and make a change soon, or better yet clean house and ask Rutherford to take over management in McDowell as a satellite office. The McDowell director is also a personality that is never wrong and far to confrontational. there are a lot of great folks on McDowell's board and sooner or later they will realize Cosgrove is the issue causing their decline.

Besides the established point that they don't have a hospice house, what other services did they offer offer that McDowell doesn't?

They want to say that McDowell did not have the number of patients to qualify for a Care Unit. Have they never been to Rutherford County Hospice and counted the number of McDowel residence using their facility. Someone has their wires crossed. Rutherford County has proven they are in this for the complete care of patients. I;m not knocking Hospice, but have a lot of questions for people who plan these things. (or fail to do so).

How many counties use the night night cocktail shot and walk off without worrying about a Patoent Care Unit. Dr. Kevorkian style care is what a lot of counties use for Hospice Care. Once Hospice takes over things are about over. Rutherford County is in it for thr long haul. Make the patient comfortable and allow them to live out their lives in a comfortable place.
