This breaks my heart! It is time that people in this community stand up and fight for what we believe in!! Do not let the new super and the board of education get by with this!!!! This is NOT a positive direction for our children!

5 Reasons I am Deeply Grieved

Recently, our local school board revealed a new policy regarding our schools and religion. The policy is 14 pages long and includes many things that are laborious and difficult to understand. However, buried within the policy are statements that could forever change the way churches and schools in McDowell County work with one another. The policy is being developed–it has not been finalized.

I will include pertinent excerpts from the policy to explain why I am deeply grieved:

Coaches will no longer be able to pray with their players.

8.2.d Coaches and other school employees may not lead prayer at either practices or games or other extracurricular school activities.

8.2.e Students may gather for prayers before, during, or after a practice or game, or before, during, or after a rehearsal or performance, so long as the prayers are student-initiated and student-led with no support, encouragement, or participation from school employees and as long as students do not pressure other students to participate. Coaches and other school employees may be present at the prayer.

Outside organizations, including the YMCA, Lunch Bunch, and Project Christmas will not be able to send information home with children who need their services.

9.4.d Flyers providing informational material and announcements from the following non-school groups may be distributed by placement in student take-home-folders. School officials are prohibited from assessing the viewpoint expressed in the flyer and deciding to exclude distribution of the flyer based upon its viewpoint; distribution of flyers pursuant to this policy section shall not discriminate based on viewpoint. This policy requires school officials to exercise viewpoint neutrality.

9.4.d.1 Parent-Teacher Organization

9.4.d.2 Government departments and agencies

9.4.d.3 Licensed day care operations on school campuses

9.4.d.4 Nonprofit organized youth sports leagues

Youth ministers will not be able to regularly attend FCA meetings held at junior high and high school campuses.

10.2.b Outsiders (non-school officials) may not direct, conduct, control, or regularly attend group meetings.

Junior High and High School Teachers may not participate in FCA or any other religious organization during non-instructional time. This also includes See You at the Pole.

10.2.c School employees may attend meetings only in a non-participatory capacity, such as to maintain discipline.

10.2.d The school shall not sponsor the club. School officials shall not promote, lead, or participate in a meeting.

High School faculty and staff may attend baccalaureate only in a non-official capacity.

11.2.b.5 School employees may attend the baccalaureate service as

11.2.b.5 School employees may attend the baccalaureate service as
long as they are not attending in an official capacity.

It doesn’t have to be this way. As a county, we have significant influence over the specific nature of these policies. G. K. Chesterton, author and philosopher from the early 1900′s said,“Once abolish the God and the government becomes the God.” I do not write this as some raging right-wing fanatic. I write this as a pastor whose heart breaks for my staff whose desire is to be a positive influence in our school system. I write this as a pastor whose heart breaks for teachers who have, for years, been a positive influence for good in the school system. I write this as a pastor whose heart breaks for students who are desperately seeking to find their way in a world that is becoming increasingly sterilized and secularized.

This isn’t a political argument. Nor am I making a legal argument. I am neither a politician nor a lawyer. This is a cultural and spiritual argument. On Monday, I will again attend the meeting. I plan to speak, and plead, on behalf of our county.

Congratulations to the school board -any acknowledgment of the belief in the supernatural should stay in the church or mosque or synagogue. If any parent doesn't get this concept, please home school your kids or put them in a church school.

All this over some church convincing parents to lie and cheat on their kid's homework so they could get on Fox again. This is sad. Let's break out the Koran at the next school board meeting and see how far the religious freedom goes then. Just another attempt by the Christian majority to trample others rights.

lets let the tax dollars follow the child to any school they want to attend. It's time for parents to have the freedom to choose. Let our children go.

You say: Hats off to the school board! Yay for upholding the laws of the United States of America
I say: This superintendent is the worst one McDowell County has ever had in the history of the Board of Education. The BOE members are scared to death of her. The county is too. It is time for the Citizens to take their BOE back. The citizens need to join together and show up at the DOE office demanding her resignation. Then, we need to vote off all the members who have sit back and let this happen to our BOE and our county.

You asked for it. The people of Marion asked for new more exact policy. That is what they are getting. The school board has to uphold the oonstitution for ALL. Not just Christens. Move to Iran if you want a thecoracy. If people didn't ask for a change than we would still have the old vague policy that had wiggle room. Be careful what you ask for.

Let's approve another $10,000.00 "hard ship" bonus for the new superintendent because her husband had to close his restaurant. What a crock of crap, talk about greedy. Her brain is in the wrong end along with the school board members. They should be ashamed for wasting tax payers money on such a ridiculous request.

They are not upholding freedom of religion. I Do not know much about the funding but if the state is not finding sports or FCP then they are restricting freedom of religion.
Those volunteering are not funded by the state at all & cannot be told they cannot say anything as they are not, obviously, a representative of the state.(Let's not forget freedom of speech here too).
If they follow through with this, I hope FTP will meet off campus & invite every preacher willing to attend. Are they expected to be guided by those who know nothing about their club....a student club let's not forget.
Once again, we are seeing common sense flying out of the window because of those who think they have wisdom because of knowledge.

They are not removing student led prayer. Students can pray all they want but a school sponsered event can not have a prayer that excludes other religions or make an atheist listen to prayers. It really is that simple.

A coach CAN ask for a moment of silence, a player (I think)can asked to say a prayer at half time. The coach, because he is a school employee, can't led a christen prayer because that is against the right of non christens and atheist.

I think this is harder for people who don't live in a multicultural area to understand because 99% of the people here are Christens. It might be easier to understand if 1/2 your neighbors were of other religions

There are many children in this county who depend on the school food pantry and Lunch Bunch for food. Without help from the churches these programs go away and children go hungry. Project Christmas has always relied on help from the schools to get out information and help identify needs
These things are for ALL children...Muslim, Christian, Athiest, Wiccan, black,white,hispanic,etc.... Do we not have a moral obligation to care for those who cannot care for themselves? Certainly as Christians, but just as fellow human beings?

To those who say everyone wants the BOE to do what christians want....

Elected officials are suppose to do "the will of the people". And "the will of the people" means the majority.....

That's how our Country started. Most elected officials want what they believe in and not what the "will" is.

The majority is suppose to have their way being it Christians or Athiests or whatever else is beleived. If we continue to shy away from our elected officials (all over the United States) not doing the will of the people, then we are just a closer step in the socialism/communist society we are heading towards....

For those who like where we are going, please move to Korea, Russia or any other Socialism/Communist country you would like and please don't continue to want it here!

Our children deserve better!
