Can anyone tell me when West Court Market stopped taking Debit cards and EBT cards? And why? I don't write checks or keep cash on me, so my card is all I use. The market is within walking distance from my house and really convenient.

It was my mistake--they do take EBT cards. But I still want to know why they don't take debit cards.

A lot of times the service charge on debit or credit is paid by the store and not the buyer. Some of the smaller mom and pop stores can't afford that.

I like to grab a Mountain Dew from the drink machine when they are closed and sit in the parking lot and watch the traffic light change, best entertainment in Marion.

West Court has been my store of choice for better than 32 years. Best meat anywhere, always fresh, you know who cut it & can go watch them if you want to. The people there are super. Bud Hollifield is a wonderful person and his boys are just as good to deal with. It's probably the only "community" grocery store in these parts. I've never known them to take cards other than the food stamp cards. Every time a business takes a card they are charged by the bank for the transaction. Unless they add a surcharge to the customer, they lose money. That's why CJ's and lots of other places won't take them. If you have a bank card you should have a check book. That's what I use. It's a small inconvenience for the quality of the goods and service they provide.

My brother-in law owns a business and pays all his vender's with paper checks. A while back the bank called him and informed him his check account was low. When he checked his account he discovered someone had used one of his paper check numbers to go on an INTERNET shopping spree. Most INTERNET shopping sites will accept check numbers for payment. The bank sent him to the sheriff's Department and they sent him back to the bank. He never did get his $2,500 back. Sure it costs a business .25 to accept a debit card but at least they don't have to worry about getting a bad check. And CJ's does accept debit cards because I used mine there yesterday to pay for gas.

Allow me to say for the record that I've owned a business so please don't be so naive to think "it costs a business .25 to accept a debit card". It could cost me as easily as $200+ a month in fees, etc. to have my credit card machine. I lost money on every single transaction made with it ... even trying to add that cost back to the price of product doesn't really help. And heaven help you if you take American Express cards! Those fees will eat you alive. Truthfully, it's only because customers like the convenience of a card machine that stores even have them. They damn sure aren't for the convenience of the store.

The fees incurred are much greater than 25 cents. Each transaction is $.25 , plus 1.75% to 3.75% , plus other small fees. Imagine your utility bill with all the small fees , each card transaction is kind of like that. Our business takes lots of debit and credit cards , debit cards cost us about 50% more to take. We purchased the transaction machine and it costs about $650.

To colormeblue; First of all, I do not appreciate your calling me a fool. My use or lack thereof of paper checks is none of your business, however, I do appreciate the warning. Being a fairly up-to-date person when it comes to current events I watch the news every day. I am constantly hearing about stolen CARD numbers being used for online purchases, much more so than paper checks. I hear alot about business checks being duplicated & passed illegally as well, but the seller is as much to blame as the buyer. Call any company to place an order or go to any online site. I believe you'll find that when a card number is entered, the card owners address automatically comes up, including the phone number. If the seller is asked to ship to a different address they should verify, by phone, that the sale is legitimate. If they fail to do that, they should be found to "aid & abet" a criminal act. To marionnative48; You are a little behind the times and quite misinformed. CJ's Pit Stop does accept cards, but for fuel only. CJ's on the 5 lane DOES NOT accept cards of any kind. In addition, there is no such business as CJ's Riverside. Cliff hasn't owned Riverside Market for several years now. That business belongs to Jeff. Also for your information, the costs to accept charge/debit cards vary, not only from bank to bank but also to the processing company. They can, depending on the company, even be based on the volume of use in addition to many other factors the business has no control over. The company I work for changed processing companies for that reason. It's an unfriendly world out there, especially when it comes to the handling of our hard earned money. I guess the best way to protect our accounts & alleviate the problem of "We do not accept cards" is to just go back to carrying cash.

The information, after you enter the card number, does not "automatically" come up; unless you have a previous account at the online store you are buying from. If you do not have an account, you must input your own information, which is used to verify that the card is actually yours. Otherwise all you'd have to do is find a credit card out on the street, go to an online store, and find out their address.. telephone number, etc. It doesn't work like that ;) Your billing address and name are used to verify the card against you.

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate West Court. They have the best and most fairly priced meat in town, and very friendly service. You just can't beat locally owned, non-franchise stores for service.
