Take a look at the planters on Marion Square. There cast in stone, you'll see the astrological symbols of the Zodiac.Although these present symbols differ greatly from other astrological systems, astrology as we know it was founded by Zoroaster c. 600 or so BC,and the Zoroastrian astrological system is the original source of all subsequent currents and tendencies in astrology, and hence the root of the poisonous tree of mystery religions and heresy.
More importantly, you can find these identical symbols on the Wiccan Pentacle,a magical design or device used in pagan rituals.
Now, I don't think there's anything sinister a la Dan Brown here , but its intriguing to me that Butler and Co. are not aware of this religious display right in the middle of the hub of the Universe . Or maybe they are, in which case the recent hoo-rah over the 10 commandments monument becomes even more comical and ridiculous.
Sherman, however, got what he wanted- Marion "Christians" acting like idiots and yelling at each other ( did you see that redneck yelling "Yore a infidel"?) while the TV cameras were rolling.
Wake up, people.

So, just how many pagans are there in that area? Are are they just to scared to even show their brooms?

A few, probably,as we're in close proximity to SIU.

But I think the symbols on the planters are more a product of ignorance on the part of the mayor ( who has been in office since the 60's)and city council than anything else. When they commissioned the design for Tower Square in the 80's, they possibly didn't consider that the symbols had any meaning , although the mayor , in a grandiose delusion, began referring to Marion as "The Hub of the Universe" in the mid-80's , shortly after the project was completed. So,it's possible that the architect developed the square using that theme as his point of reference. I really don't think Butler had any idea of the significance of the symbols.

It makes the entire controversy about the 10 commandments monument absolutely ridiculous.

In the spirit of enhancing tourism to "The Hub of the Universe", maybe Butler should invite all the pagans, wiccans etc. to celebrate halloween on the square. Just think: they can bring their brooms, cauldrons and pentacles, and really put Marion on the occult map...

On the other hand, maybe Butler could recruit 12 Christian pastors , give them each a small sledgehammer and cold chisel, and set them to work obliterating the occult symbols....

This subject, of the symbols which are located on specific portions of Marion's Downtown Tower Square, has been the topic of discussion before. As recent as several months ago, the issue of the meaning of the symbol's was brought to the mayor's attention during a meeting at City Hall.

During those past conversations Butler explained that he had not noticed the adornments of which you speak. After pointing them out and asking their specific meaning(s), Butler said, "(As far as he knew), the symbols at the end of the planters on Marion's Downtown Square, have no meaning.'They (the symbols) are nothing more than architectural "squiggles" and are perhaps nothing more than examples of the styles of art at the time the tower was constructed."

Again, Butler displays his ignorance.Either that or he's deliberately misleading the people. Google Astrology online. See if the symbols are "architectural squiggles" or have some real meaning as indicated.

In this particular case, I think Butler just let them (whoever they were who constructed and designed the downtown tower square) have their way.

Bob would have in all likelihood put a stop on astrology signs. That's not to say that he had his hand in it - he always does.... All those years in an office right across the street and Butler never noticed. All of those homecoming parades and functions, declarations and ordinances which were made any big deal of - and Butler had no inkling he was messing around with his astrology for Marion.

Makes you wonder about Butler's soul and what price that went for? Probably doesn't miss that either

Just another sign of superstition as are Christian crosses, Stars of David or Crescents
