Don't get me wrong, the mayor has to put in work to get much of what we have, but can he get most or all of the credit? IMO, he takes some credit, but the location should sell itself. We are located in arguably the busiest junctions in SI outside of the metro east. The location should sell itself. Granted, we have the Star Bonds district (sitting empty mind you, but Bradley had just as much of a hand in that.

Mt Vernon is seeing nice growth in business and their location sells itself. I believe that Marion's location also sells itself. Quite frankly, I believe there are people in power that are possibly holding back Marion from growing even further. Maybe not intentionally, but they have a problem thinking big or outside of the box.

If Marion wanted, could Marion make an appeal to lure the new Morthland college to Marion or is Morthland committed to WF? I know the college is very new, but the leaders at MC have a committment to seeing it grow and they are currently working on accreditation. It's a small college, but even small colleges can lure in more business and industry to its community.

Bob Butler has overseen a lot of growth in our town, but is he just the beneficiary of prime location sitting on an interstate with the only real exit to a large state university and two interstates merging just 8 miles to the south? I believe only the tip of the iceberg has been touched on the communities potential on what could happen and a good ol' boy network more concerned with status than with Marion.

Right you are-- look no further than Butler crony Harry Crisp...

Just why would Harry L. want to hold back Marion? Seems to me it would be a way to continue to expand his fortune.

Pretty easy---1) as the general wage/benefit scale goes up, Crisp has to follow suit
2)Greater competition in the employment market places constraints upon Crisp's treatment of his employees, making it easy for them to render the single digit salute to Ol'Harr..
3) Increased job opportunities having nothing to do with the Crisp/Butler cabal greatly diminishes their power base locally. If they can't control jobs, they can't control people...

Don't spend too much time or energy worrying about the local conspiracy theorists club.....most of us (us being the people who employ logic and common sense) have written them off some time ago as looney.

I think it's geography : location of I57 I24 and I64 has more to do with Marion's growth than the old man at city hall. It was bound to happen, just as it has everywhere else in the country.Credit Ken Gray....

Here are a couple of interesting items:
-The city council authorized payment(read: your tax $$) for construction of BENCHES on S Virginia St...where will the benches be? Who benefits? A Virginia St business???

-Another TIF grant to the CRISP REALTY COMPANY

-Looks as if councilman Patton has boarded the Butler train ... another Patton on the Library staff ( a family member?)

The council also authorized a city paid repair to the structure of a building on the W side of the square, supposedly due to a deteriorating sidewalk.

While they're at it, why don't they repair the broken, crumbling and dangerous sidewalks in the rest of town? Oh. I forgot. Their cronies don't own the properties....

You're placing a bit too much emphasis on your worth - at two cents... Enjoy the winter without your wool once again this year. Stick to the flock - all is well

Yes Marion has grown if you think Restaurants, banks, gas stations, and hotels, all low paying jobs. Marion needs a Good factory job @$20.00 plus an hour. Marion has become the place for all surrounding towns to eat at. All I see is a new place to eat or a Bank being built, same every year !

There's the problem- with the notable exception of Aisin ,the crony system has suppressed the prevailing wage scale for at lease 5 decades. Just ask yourself "who benefits?

The big problem is factories have to be lured to the area. Unfortunately, when our gubby attempts to bring in industry to IL he send t up to Cook and collar counties.

Exactly. It's the OBAMACONOMY with all its restrictive regs, unknown future tax increases of Obummercare and fascist government intrusion (look that one up- Mussolini didn't OWN the means of production, he just CONTROLLED IT BY REGULATION). Anybody with half a brain would be wary of starting or expanding a major business venture in this economic climate. And add to that mixture any Butleresque snide remarks, a wiseguy know- it -all attitude ( not to mention a stifling crony system) and you have a recipe for going elsewhere...Like Indiana, Ohio,North Carolina.. Oh. Wait. These states all have Republican governors, and don't have Chicago...
