Bachelors degree, so what do you think that impresses people. I received mine 22 years ago while working full time. I don't make 75K a year but used to and more. I worked in the management part of the coal industry for several years. I now own my home, vehicles, have no debt and live comfortably. Believe me a Bachelors degree don't impress. I never mentioned it to people, It did help me move up in the industry but nobody cares... most all production miners made that a year

I don't think it impresses people. In fact it's a fairly useless piece of paper. So you worked in the coal industry and now the world is going to clean energy and your pissed at Obama and his dirty liberal agenda. This is just my opinion but who the hell wants to work in a coal mine anyway, regardless of the pay. You better tell your coal mine buddies to look for different work because we're going away from dirty energy

Yea that sounds exactly like a place I want to work. Long hours, horrible/dangerous conditions. I never said anything bad about people who work in mines, hell I have friends that work at American coal and I tell them them same thing. It's all going to change so you might wanna look for different work

No I never sought employment at a coal mine. The hours and working underground always sounded terrible to me. So I worked towards a skilled labor job with better conditions and benefits

There is already hardly anything here at all now. Walmart, Menards, the mall (which is dying and has been for past few years...), the Stadium, few restaurants, maybe few state jobs but not many. Then we have Carbondale which sucks too only thing keeping a lot of this area floating is SIU which keeps losing students because the college has dumb fucks running the place. Face it you can go to school here if your from here if you like but finding a job in something here is only going to keep becoming more and more difficult if you decide to stay here. I heard that reason chicago people are coming here cause we SUPPOSEDLY have MORE JOBS HERE than THEY DO. If that is true going to laugh my ass off. But seriously though want a better future? MOVE THE FUCK OUT OF THIS PATHETIC AREA!!! And go somewhere that has some jobs, future, and something for you. If you think things here will get better your wrong because they will only keep getting worse. Future of Southern IL more debt, fewer jobs, and more people getting in disability, young girls having babies as their "job", and relief, drugs (hard stuff not pot), and blah blah blah...your life your future decide how YOU want to live it.

Southern IL (yes, even Marion) will never be able to compete with larger urban areas. That’s just how it is. It doesn’t matter who the president or governor is. One person does not and cannot control what happens in little ol’ Marion, Illinois. Come on people, the world is much larger than you realize. What S.I. can do is try to capitalize on what you do have (interstates, tourism, etc.) and try to make the most of it. And that seems to be happening, for the most part.

Someone told me back when I was in school that if I wanted a stable job with a decent salary, I’d have to leave Southern Illinois. I discovered that to be true, so I left, and am quite content. However, I know many people who still live up there and are happy. I guess it all depends on what you want to do and where you want to go in life.
