Is it just me or does anyone else think the boat club is a joke. It is after all part of the national wild life refuge and the public isn't allowed to fish out there. People pay a membership fee out there and I understand they don't want the public using the club house and the other facilities, but if we aren't bothering anyone and if we don't have any beer why can't we fish? What's even worse is that my parents are members and pay $600/yr to dock their boat for a few months and I'm not allowed to fish out there unless they are with me at all times. I think its a little ridiculous.

I agree completely. It's public land but a private group treat it as if they own it. If you don't belong to their good old boy club you're not welcome. The refuge really needs to kick these guys out.

I have no problem with a private marina existing there so long as they continue to have open membership. It's the old pay to play, that's all. Now if my fees for Crab Orchard stickers goes there, I do have a problem! These should be used for public facilities and ramps.

In reality it's a private club on public land. If you don't have the money you are not allowed in. I'm not talking about the facilities but on the property itself. If you've already paid for the sticker to have access to the refuge you should be able to have access to the refuge ( publicly owned ) property at Blue Heron. It's the same private group who now runs Blue Heron that ran the yacht club but back then you could fish the shorline because it was refuge property. There is a new refuge manager and I think these guys were able to pull one over on him and close it to all who don't belong to their good old boys club.

Hillbillies are hillbillies: genetically programmed not to care about anyone but themselves. A strange inbreed..

It's a good thing the refuge has rangers that are not afraid to deal with the trash...human and otherwise

The problem is that this is public property and not private. I agree, they are snooty and full of themselves and act like they own the place. It looks like the refuge doesn't care what they do and will allow them to go on and treat Blue Heron as if it's a good ol boy club for locals, with a lot of money, only. Not quite what the mandate for the refuge states. I guess I shouldn't expect any more from this area any way.

Blue Heron Marina is a concession that was opened to the public for bid by the federal Refuge system. The bid was won and is now operated as a concession, open to the public, all the public. If you wish to use the facilities you pay the appropriate fee, boat slip fee, camping fee, activity center fee, etc., no different than you would at Disney World, Six Flags, or Silver dollar City. The grounds are alcohol free, and no nonsense is allowed. Children are safe and the folks are peaceful, come and enjoy the outdoors as it was intended.

In truth, that piece of the refuge used to be open to the public to be able to enjoy with your family. It was still a club so you couldn't use the facilities ( buildings or boat slips ) unless you belonged to that club. I had no problem with that. The club maintained those facilities. The club does not own the property! It is public land that you can no longer enjoy unless you belong to their good old boys club. They'd been trying to make it private and in essence they now have. As for the Disney / Six Flags comparison, that land is privately owned. This is a part of the refuge and is owned by the public. Most of the people there are rude and feel entitled to that property. Even if you reserve a camping spot they let you feel you're not welcome. My friend stayed there a couple of nights and will never be going back there again.

It's no different than the other marina and campground. They require a fee to camp or swim. They also charge to camp.

I agree too. I think it's dumb that they expect ppl who buy refuge stickers to then pay more just to drive out there and look at the scenery/take pictures/fish. I get it if you are in the building or using the boats. Or camping. I get that they dont want loud obnoxious parties out there. & yes they need to treat everyone the same.

I had always driven out there and looked around. Watched the animals. Recently though you even try to drive out there, Even just to take a picture, and they will come racing up to you. I had a lady come up to me in a federal refuge truck while i was near the campground. With a refuge jacket & plain clothes tell me i had to leave. I asked her why since i was only taking pictures. I had a refuge sticker that i paid for. I wasnt disturbing anyone. In fact, it was sprinkling rain and cold that day. No one was outside at all except me. She was extremely hateful. when i noticed she didnt have the full refuge outfit on i asked if she was conservation. Since i am used to what they wear and how they act. She informed me that she WAS NOT conservation. But the caretaker or whatever. I asked why was she in a federal vehicle and in a federal jacket if she wasnt an officer. She had no answer. She told me i had to sign in just to drive back there. Mentioned fees. I got in my car and left.

Ive also been approached by the marina caretaker before. When i was out there with my dog sitting on the dock over near the boats. Not on any of the private docks. The one that isnt gated. My dog is very small. She wasnt using the bathroom anywhere. We we just sitting on the dock enjoying our surroundings. This man approached us from the trailer and said we had to be members to be out there. Hateful man. Now i just drive through that part and dont stop.

I wont go back ever to the campground. Even if someone i know decides to pay for the use of that area.
