There's nothing in this world worse than McDonald's food gas, on second thought, maybe Taco Bell.

Wow, amazing the insult hurling here, I just read through this for the first time.
Such the classic situation here, if no one were watching the site folks would be complaining to Pete and others to do something. Pete, by the way, is not living some lavish lifestyle. I would check out who runs SN if you want to see who is trying to keep their high end lifestyles up and running. Do your research on all the backgrounds here, its important, no matter what your politics. The boat mentioned as Pete's in this thread belongs to the Baykeepers, and they do some great tours around the bay, no matter what you think of their politics, it's a great service and so cool to see the whole bay! Let's give them some credit here, someone needs to be watching out for our common public interests since the state/county long ago stopped. Pete, if people are asking for exact numbers on contamination, can you provide a link with that data? And what it would take to clean it up ($) as well as the requirements legally, ie CEQA? Then maybe the public could take an interest in holding the city/county/state responsible for enforcing these laws equally. This contaminated land has been looked at for years by many groups that I know of, and believe me, if the money was there to have just bought it and cleaned it up, it would have been done. Grants, etc. were looked at and the feasibility, as well as the hoop jumping as to whom actually had authority on the site, were too much for a small group to take on, this is true. SN has the money to do the cleanup, but then what and at what cost? That's the question, because then it will be theirs to develop. And to the person writing about a scenario of getting in trouble from a neighbor's talk, imagine your neighbor got to bypass 5 or more legally binding building codes and sewage codes through some loopholes in the law. Wouldn't that piss you off, that you had to pay a bunch of money to do the same things, and obey a bunch of laws that your neighbor didn't because they had top notch lawyers and a bundle of money that you did not have? It would piss me off. Above all, let's make sure SN are held to the same rules and reg's that everyone else is. Otherwise we will have another PL on our hands and we all saw the mess they made of this community by using big money loopholes. To all of you asking about EIR's, CEQA, and all that, take some time to research those and good luck figuring out all the jargon! You can find a great book explaining CEQA that was put out a few years ago. It's not so simple as Pete explaining the EIR, you would need to read the entire document. So please take time to do that before you write about it, because the folks working on this have, and it's not the easiest thing to wade through those documents. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could just put money into a fund to just get the place cleaned up by a group with no interest in the outcome of the land except that it is clean? Then we can argue about who gets to do what with it. For now, let's not allow ANYONE to use loopholes in the law to move their own agenda forward, on either "side". |

I do not think SN will ever make a profit from the Marina Center, I think SN is once again going above and beyond to give back to the community.
Also, I do not understand the lawsuit of the Baykeeper, they bring a lawsuit to clean the property, then another lawsuit to keep from cleaning the property. If you disturb the soil you will release dioxins, then how the heck do you remove it? Regardless it is a great deal for the Baykeeper attorney's a nice payday either way, I'm glad they are looking out for my family. With all the lawsuits and millions of dollars they have been paid off from the lawsuits where have the Baykeepers reinvested those millions of dollars into cleaning up the bay? where? They got the Simpson site cleaned up so you and your family don't have to worry about that. SN is dragging their feet looking for tricks and shortcuts. Brownfields are the largest inhibitor to economic growth in Eureka. Big boxes harm rural economies. |

This is not your land. Get off it and let the rightful owners reoccupy it. We will clean it and sanctify the blood stained sand that you europeans polluted. Hidakota, ramooba ti wan jotioa. GET OUT
