This school has done very well by my daughter. She actually graduated last year and I was very happy with the education that she received at this school. You do not have to worry about violence over education at Pride Academy. I do agree that they do suspend kids quite easily, but if your kid knows what to do and what not to do and follows the rules they will be fine. My daughter was there for 2 years and was only suspended twice. Once for disrespect to her teacher..which i do not tolerate and felt she quite deserved...and another for not showing up to a saturday detention. Even though they are very strict behavior wise, I do feel that they will work with parents to try and help your child achieve the high expectations they expect. There is definitely a difference in the educational atmosphere at Pride then at the other local schools and you won't find more caring and involved teachers then at Pride.

Suspension should be reserved as a last resort and only for very troubling behavior. It seems to me that Pride can benefit from a merit system used by some NYC charter schools where there is a merit for good behavior and a demerit for unacceptable behavior. At the end of a certain period accumulated merits can be redeemed for prizes. It really works!!

If you have high expectations for your child, this is the place for him/her.They suspend to send a message that misbehaviors are not tolerated and it's not fair to the children that want to learn and succeed. Ms. Thomas and Ms. Browser, keep up the good work!

Some days my daughter cries not to go to school cause she doesnt want to get into trouble with the dean or the principle. These teachers need to be removed and reported.

I sent my child to Pride for an Education not to be afraid to go to school . There so many kids who get suspened every day because of the Dean Robin Brower . She says every kid who is in trouble does nothing but lie to there parent . That the parent doesn't know there child at all . No one is perfect we all make mistakes but if all you do is always suspened kids what are they going to learn..........

My child attends pride academy and although I am relieved that I am not the only parent with concerns regarding the constant suspensions, I am dissapointed that we parents haven't come together to bring this nonsense to an end. The truth is that the school makes us parents feel inadequate when we argue that the suspensions are being used excessively and NOT as a last resort (they use it as a first resort). I searched PRIDE ACEDEMY REVIEWS and this website showed up. So my question to anyone who runs across this forum is, what can we do to bring this to the attention of people who can change the way the schools disciplines the children? I know they are a charter school and "make up" their own rules, but something has to be done for the sake of all the children that attend and will potentially attend this school. PLEASE HELP. Aside from their defective method of disciplining the children I do believe that the teachers are dedicated and care about the students. In fact, maybe we should just try to get Ms. Brower fired because she is an idot and her job is useless. I'm tired of my child being treated like a criminal. Also I am going to tell every parent I know about this forum and tell them to come write their thoughts.

Your child should not have been suspended once. Being disrespectful to a teacher is not acceptable, I agree, but what could she have possibly said to the teacher that required a suspension? why couldnt she get a lunch detention or after school detention. To make her miss a whole day of school is not benefical to her.

If all of you are parents and you hate the discipline policy so much why do you continue to send your children back to this school?

Pride academy is an excellent school. If parents knew how to discipline and raise their children suspension wouldnt be an option. In the real world if you act up you have to pay the consequences. This is a charter school and any behaviors can't be tolerated. If you want your child to get away with behavior problems Pride Academy isnt the place for him or her . I recommend that you send your child to a public school....My daughter who attends Pride rates the education 10 out of 10...the staff is super dedicated and has no time for bad behaviors. I've worked as a teacher in public schools and we had to tolerate bad students. Charter schools don't. Ms. Brower and Mrs Thomas and all the outstanding Educators at Pride..KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

I taught at this school for a year and was completely disgusted by what I witnessed. The staff are treated horrifically, unless you are part of the 'in crowd'. With that I mean your job responsibilities, bonuses, and pay are based on whether you are liked or not, not on your education or qualifications as a teacher. The students, especially the special needs ones, are treated terribly. PRIDE does not adhere to IEP's, nor follow accomodations including testing standards specified in a student's IEP. They say that they accept all students, yet will try everything in their power to get rid of the special needs students once they are there. I was so disgusted with my experience there that I wrote a letter to Governor Christie requesting greater oversight of all charter schools, not just PRIDE.

Former teacher. Please post date letter was sent so that I can also refer to the fact that teachers disapprove of this school. Something has to be done to protect our children. Especially the special needs children. I believe your story because I have witness the way they (ms brower)deals with certain children. I guess they aren't part of the in crowd either.

My child was accepted to attend Pride in September and I have one question for the parents on this forum who have negative things to say about the school. Are your children still enrolled at Pride Academy? If so, why?

New Parent,

My children no longer go to that school and I have written a letter of complaint to our Governor to see what can be done about a school where the Dean and Principal feel as though they can do exactly what they want because they aren't controlled by the Board of Ed.

I say do as you please but you should do your research regarding this school. I wish I had.

VeryConcernedParent,

My child currently goes to a school where anything goes. Alot of the students are rude, fight, and are disrespectful. My daughter is not like that at all and has alot of problems as far as bullying goes at her current school. I figured a charter school would be better and safer. I have never had discipline problems with her as far as school or home goes, so I am assuming she will be fine here also? Am I wrong for assuming that? Also, I did apply here, because a coworkers son attends this school and she claimed that she liked that school and that it was a good choice. So obviously her experience and the other parent above Mr. Mallory's experience is different from yours and a few others. I don't know how else to really research the school other then word of mouth. Is there a website that you know of that can give me some more insight into this school?

Yes, they do suspend students like crazy for even the slightest things. But education wise this is probably the best school for your child. They challenged me academically and I had a wonderful experience . They also introduced me to top high school which I now attend . As long as your child stays out of trouble you will be FINE. I graduated 2011 I was sad to leave because I made do many friends . I do miss that school, they helped me pass state tests which I needed help with. But the science teacher doesn't really teach she cramped everything in and would most times let us do what we want. Idk if that changed now., I still passed the state test in science but barely only a couple of points. Bottom line I was happy to go their and the principal is amazing and so Hereros she would wait in front if the school and shake you're hand every morning & if the crossing gard isn't their she'd cross you.
