60 years later, gang leader's slaying still unsolved

There are 1216 comments on the Journal Star story from Oct 23, 2007, titled 60 years later, gang leader's slaying still unsolved. In it, Journal Star reports that:

“Shelton, 60 (actually, he was 59), was blasted out of a Jeep by machine-gun slugs fired by the gunmen from a black Sedan on a country road near his rich farmlands”

Few Peorians likely recognize the once-infamous name. Even fewer recall the swift and violent end of Carl Shelton as he traveled near Fairfield. via Journal Star

Ruthie Shelton, daughter of "Little Carl" Shelton and Jon Musgrave, authors of "Inside the Shelton Gang: One Daughter's Discovery," will hold a book signing Saturday, Nov. 22, at the site of Bernie Shelton's Parkway Tavern and Shelton Amusement Co. offices in Peoria, where he was assassinated in 1948.
The site is now Kenny's Westside Pub located at 2016 W Farmington Rd. in West Peoria. Ruthie will also have copies of her new novel, "The Untold Story," which is inspired by her family's history. Musgrave will have his other titles, "Secrets of the Herrin Gangs," "The Bloody Vendetta of Southern Illinois," "Lincoln," a collection of stories he told during his first term in the White House, "Handbook of Old Gallatin County," and "The Boy of Battle Ford," by W. S. Blackman. He will also have copies of "History, Mystery and Hauntings of Southern Illinois," by Bruce Cline, founder of the Little Egypt Ghost Society.

So sad you're jealous of people that are able to do great things with their lives. The history is a great thing to put on paper for generations to come...keep going Ruthie...don't let one old sourpuss ruin your day!!! ☺

Since I learned the truth about my family, I've been asked who killed big Carl Shelton. This is only my personal opinion but I would like to share. For many years my great uncle, big Earl Shelton, had a working relationship with Al Capone. My dad drove him to St. Augustine to meet with Capone to keep peace between the 2 "gangs". After Capone was out of the picture, different rival gangs, that believed the Sheltons had wronged them, came together to take them out. This included the Syndicate and St. Louis mobsters. Buster wortman was a main person behind Big Carl's death.

Cb Harris butler said that the house on the southeast corner past the Merriam crossroad was the Sheltons house ? I just put windows in that house and there was an old man there who told the guy who was working with me that he carried all the lumber to that house by hand from the woods south of it. But he said it was blackies house. Maybe just a communication breakdown. I'm pretty sure cb's probably right. It is a cool old house though. 5500 square feet with a big wrap around deck on the west side.

My great grandmother actually married Robert Shelton when she was younger. She was working at her mom and step fathers café as a waitress and he basically swept her off her feet. They had a daughter (my grandmother) and they ended up getting divorced. She has passed but she wouldn't talk much about it. My dad knows very little, but knowing Robert Shelton is my biological great grandfather I would love to know so much more about him and his family.
