We are all indebted to these men for their service during those years. I'm glad they are getting this recognition. I was fortunate to meet a few Tuskegee airmen at an airshow in Marysville a few years back and I thanked them as well. And no, I am not African American.

While this unit didnt see combat there was action in their micro-theatre of operations.

There were Japanese submarines right off our coast well into 1942 including the I-24 which sank the GRT oil tanker Montebello on December 23, 1941 just south of Big Sur/Piedras Blancas coast.

Another nice statue would be nice and this unit is an interesting and important bit of local Santa Cruz History.

I think that the military station was the floor plan for the circles on the West side of town and Woodrow once doubled as an Army air-strip.

A lot of people, even locals dont know this bit of local history.

Anyway, my phones going off I gotta go,

Circles predate the war by 50 years. Woodrow is so wide because of a streetcar line that was torn up 25 years before the war. There was once an air strip on the west side on the "Swanton tract" again, decades before the war.

Cabrillo extension had an excellent day trip course about local history and World War Two scheduled for next Sunday but it was canceled due to low enrollment.

Unfortunately most young people probably can't even tell you who we fought or why we fought WWII..........and probably don't care unless they had a relative involved.

hey blowhard did you notice that your comment was number #20 but there are only 9 comments on this thread. 11 comments deleted because some PC windbag didn't like the reasons given so he flagged them for abuse but I'll comment on this for you. Let's see if a group of White men had the cushy duty of spending the war in Santa Cruz as opposed to fighting it out on Iwo Jima or Bataan do you think they would get a plaque? No they would be told thanks for your duty and we'll have a parade for you on Veterans Day. Somehow someway because this group is Black they are now deserving of a plaque? This is just another example of PC revisionist thinking and blowhards like you just can't grasp that.

gee Jimi I answered your question and all you do is harp on another of your lame assumptions. Also the terms of use weren't violated on any of the posts that were deleted they were just deleted because PC idiots like yourself hate hearing the other side of any argument. This is what I find sad but then again after reading some of your posts I'm not sure which is worse; your drivel or the absolute blindness that so many people go through life in I guessing your drivel ranks higher on the scale of stupidity. Oh btw considering how you post here 24/7 I'm sure you know an awful lot about loneliness

They won't honor any military in this town but seeing how this unit was all black makes it ok. Typical Santa Cruz.

Hmmm, well if I remember my history correctly black soldiers were not allowed to fight and die alongside white soldiers -- blacks were not trusted to do the job as well, and heaven forbid some black blood would get on a white guy. So that is probably why they were given this isolated duty post. If they were sent over there to fight I'm sure they would have done that with honor. Our city finally wants to properly honor the WWII Vets who guarded our stretch of coastline, and it's tough luck if you don't like it.

I started this discussion with a post asking why we are still congratulating folks for being black? I think we're way, way past that point by now. I got a number of positive "judgments" for my post before it was deleted by some PC police man, along with any other posts agreeing with me. My post and other deleted post hardly violated terms of use, they were ideas that someone just didn't want to hear.

Yikes--those lefties just hate to be questioned. They remind me of 60's era Republicans, just so full of themselves ...

Ask a white Santa Cruz County liberal if they think Asians do better in school and have higher IQs than U.S. Caucasians. And of course you'll get a reply along the lines of, "Well, of course they do, just look at the UC system, you doofus!"
The submissive white liberal will be all too ready to assert his/her intellectually inferior status. In fact, it's sort of what defines him/her.

Now ask that same SC Liberal if they think U.S. whites have overall higher IQs than African Americans. Oooh ... now wait ... this is fun ... now step back a few feet, wait 45 seconds, and watch their head explode. It's very cool, I've done it a few times now!

Bring along some HandiWipes to clean up the mess, you'll need 'em.

So what I'm saying is--white liberals have figured out that it takes less work to be the b@tch than to be assertive. And that's why they make the decisions they do.
