Teachers are put in a very privileged position of trust with our children. If that trust is violated in such a destructive way to the child, then the teachers must be punished severely. After the parents, or legal guardian, teachers are the guidance figure in a student's life.

This person should get life. Just like they'll affect the child for the rest of his/her life, so should the teacher's life.

We need to send a strong message that this type of abusive behavior won't be tolerated. Hopefully, then we'd also stop giving abuser a pass based on their looks.

Thanks for a great post, Give him life. I totally agree. This will affect this girl forever in some way or another. So the same should be done with the teacher. Perps don't get better, they just get better at hiding what they're doing.

No-one should ever be above suspicion when it comes to children. Evey single time someone does something like this he/she has supporters who say "No way the kid is lying".

But here is the trouble. If a person is a pedophile and you're an adult he/she isn't interested in you at all. You might as well be wallpaper. As a result, he/she is no threat to you and also, as a result you will not notice the threat.

I do know some nice male teachers at my kids school but I do not trust them as much as the females. Like they said here 9 out of 10 abusers is male.

Generally, men do not like to be around kids so anytime one stands out as 'super interested' I become suspicious. Pay attention to the men around you as you shop, as you visit with friends, etcs. Most guys will engage a kid briefly so be nice and then walk away. The ones that hover are dangerous... and this goes for family members too.

Can you show me statistics to validate this claim? I love kids. Sometimes I wish I was one again.

The Allentown school district did little to stop a South Mountain Middle School counselor.

He taugth and abused children for 20 years, starting at Wm Allen. The he was finally stopped by the Police in Macuangie when he was in the back seat screwing a young boy student in the butt.

We have a child who was molested by a trained day care worker. He had at least a dozen victims.

Before they get caught they often have many many victims. Our son is older now, his life has been wrecked by this.

The man got 75 to 100 years, his victims got a life sentence of depression, drugs and alcohol.

The offender is in a secure prison, it costs the tax payer $40,000 a year to hold these kind of crimes. NEVER NEVER ARE THEY REHABILITATED. Some are sorry, and regret the crime, although I believe they only regret getting caught. We would be doing our children, our society and them a favor by executing them.

I pray it never happens to anyone you love, but if it does you will feel the same way victims do.
Well said

I wondered the same. There are some great male teachers and many kids need positive mae role models. This is just so sick. I can't imagine what causes these people to go after young kids.

I'm not a teacher nor do I work with kids but I love kids and consider myself a kid at heart. The poster I responded to and like-minded individuals make me leary to engage with any kid. I've always been well liked by the neighborhood kids.

It's a shame there are people that paint most men with the pedophile brush.

<<<It's a shame there are people that paint most men with the pedophile brush.>>>>

It is a shame. I had read that Big Brothers has had a hard time in getting volunteers because of the stigma that many men are sexual molesters in waiting. That their guard has to be so high that it becomes too much like a job- having to be constantly aware of how circumstances would be perceived. NBC National news did a story recently that their is a shortage of Male teaches and role models in elementary schools. It really is a shame what has happened and don't really see any solution.

It is a damn shame. I would love to be a big brother to some under priviledged kid but won't because of this perception by the non-thinking broad brush painters.

Kids are such a blast to be around who could want to do harm to them. I find it incomprehensible.

Well it took a few paragraphs, but it finally made it in the story. Of course they're suing the school district.

I'll take heat for this comment, but what the hey:

If your relationship with your 12-year old daughter is in a place where sexual abuse, even by a teacher or trusted family member, is not talked about immediately by the child or not picked up on by you then you have failed as a parent in my opinion.

I'm a teacher. I'm a male. I work in a junior high. You have no idea how hard it is to be a good teacher without constantly thinking of these issues. It's hard for me, especially as a male educator, to genuinely show affect towards students. To smile. To care. I'm scared to do so. Extra halp after school? Pfff..yeah right. Should I? Absolutely! Will I? No. Because I'm conscious of our society and I do NOT want to leave even a POSSIBILITY of some type of discomfort and/or accusation. We teachers are versed on this. School districts are devoting time and money to prevent/correct/eradicate. During professional development and faculty meetings, we discuss options, ways to assist without possible accusations. Examples, when meeting with a student, place yourselves in front of the door, leave the door open; when meeting with a child, have another colleague there; meet in the office; etc. Look, I don't want a child, boy or girl, to even mention any awkwardness. That's enough to earn print, to gain public attention, and enough to ruin my life and my family's. All because of people like Mansfield.(I take it the Catholic church is feeling the heat as well.) Mansfield has no place on our earth. He likes kids. There's no rehabilitation. There's no changes. I guess it's equivalent to my turning gay. I'm married to a woman. I like girls. If I had committed a sex crime and a judge ordered me to stay away from women, I presume I could...for awhile, but natural tendencies push for fullfillment. Unfortunately, Mansfield and the rest of the pedolphiles, caught and uncaught, like children. There will alway be children. I only see two options: castration or execution, latter preferred. Moreover, to attack male teachers is wrong, but I completely understand. I know what my intentions are; nobody else does. I know that. I always try to maintain an open dialogue with my student's parents, albeit usually email. I have children of my own too. They attend school. I scrutinize my children's teachers with a hawk's eye. I'm just as concerned for my daughter and her male teachers as I am with my sons and their male teachers! The world is crazy. Perhaps replacing teachers with computers is a good thing...I don't know. I love my job. I love teaching at the junior high level. Heather was 12 when all this happened; the girls in my class right now are 12. Sure, some girls are more precocious than others, but not one girl in my school would be left unphased by something like this. Many of you posters have it right. He was a man with built-in trust; he abused it to abuse someone, someone vulnerable. It's hard NOT to focus our attention on Mansfield after reading this article. Hatred oozes from us; prejudices surface, but let's not forget the victim! My heart goes out to Heather, and I pray that she's able to recover from this and live a stable and happy life.

THE SITUATION IS TERRIBLE. IT IS HARD TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE LIKE MANSFIELD JUST AS IT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND THE FEMALE TEACHERS THAT HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR STUDENTS.

TEACHING IS A DIFFICULT PROFESSION WITH HIGHER SOCIETAL STANDARDS SET UPON THE MEMBERS OF THE PROFESSION.

THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF MALE TEACHERS AT SECONDARY LEVEL AS WELL, FOR A LOT OF THE SAME REASONS.

IMAGINE BEING A MALE TEACHER WITH A CLASSROOM FILLED WITH 17 AND 18 YEAR OLD FEMALES DRESSED LIKE THEY DO TODAY, VERY DIFFICULT AND DISTRACTING TO NOT ONLY THE TEACHER BUT THE MALE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS. TOUGH CALL.

I think kids get mixed messages from many adults. A married principal was messing with a married administrator in Upper Bucks county, half the kids in school knew about it, but most of the parents did'nt. Kids are taught not to question the teacher. When children see things like this, they question everything else we try to teach them. Teachers have to live a respectable life or find another profession. Are there other girls in this guys past?

I'm a teacher and it makes me sick to read articles like this. This man should spend the next 50 years in prison. The community, parents and especially the kids put their trust in teachers. Any teacher who prays on a child should be locked up for a long time. It's people like Troy Mansfield (scum) who give dedicated educators a bad name.
